The most rewarding thing about owning a gallery (for me, thus far), is the sense of shared vision and the ability for folks - artists and visitors - to see and experience work in different ways as a direct result of the way in which pieces are situated in space. Hearing people talk about feeling and seeing connections where they weren’t able to - or hadn’t imagined, before, is fantastic. Most times when putting together a show (even with the work of only one artist) I have no idea where the magic will be - no matter how in love with the work I already may be. ‘How the hell is this going to come together,’ is a common refrain. But it does come together. Staying with the work, moving it through space and seriously just being with it in silence reveals so much. That folks can then experience these connections, without word or explanation … is the best gift ever. Working with people like Jackie and Lydia and Joseph (none of whom I knew prior to this show) is another facet of that gift. These artists are authentically pushing the boundaries of their own practices and able to recognize and appreciate that shared devotion in each other. With art fairs and press and the push to be showing, showing, showing and selling, selling, selling, sometimes it is easy to forget the value of being with work. Being with one another. Just looking. Artist Spotlight: Lydia Kinney @l.m.kinney Lydia Kinney (b. 1991) is a painter based in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2014 with a BFA in Painting, and was the recipient of department honors and the 2013 Rob Moore award. Lydia shows regionally throughout New England, often in the Pioneer Valley. “Small paintings are so potent! These works explore so many microcosms of fresh deliberation without the risk of fussing or overworking. In these paintings I am leaning into the way that a small work can demand clarity and hold risk, exploring the Theseus-like alchemy of idea to painting back to idea. One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting an open call exhibition is the opportunity to find an artist who is working right at the edge of their creative output. Someone who has devoted energies to a practice or process for quite some time and is right at that moment when things begin to come together in new and surprising ways. Things can still feel a bit tenuous, but there is real magic at work. Meeting with Lydia Kinney in her packed studio in Greenfield, Massachusetts was decidedly one of those moments. She is at a crossroads - the youngest in the show (in terms of experience) and it has been an honor to offer her the opportunity to see her own work in a different light. Kinney’s paintings are pictured here in conversation with Jackie Brown’s phenomenal 3D printed clay sculptures - yet another instance of a remarkable leap in form and surface. Lydia Kinney is a painter working in structured and layered abstraction. Lydia favors art that articulates a relationship to self, to body, space, and form. She received her BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and was the recipient of the 2013 Rob Moore award. Lydia Kinney’s work is powerful, playful and ✨stunning✨. Through a continuous process of painting, sanding and refining, Kinney builds deep layers of color and texture with an utterly pristine surface. Her work encourages slow looking and a kind of “falling in” to the depths. Kinney is also a poignant writer. Excerpts from her statement about this most recent body of work: “In my process, the paintings are where the future would fit. I do not feel a future in my body. I do not see what a future could look like with what I have around me. My imagination is stretched thin, and my most pragmatic habits fall short. Much of the work I find most resonant is work depicting the figure: work about the artist’s relationship to body, to space, to form … Abstraction fills in the gap for both: the resonance of figuration as sensation and the pessimism of lived experience are one and the same when married in my work. Painting gives me a new visual language to illustrate the sensation of loss (future tense), alienation (physical), and doubt … My paintings are still, always, an environment. Some works are rooms with little doorways and no floor. Other paintings are large confrontations of open space. Recently motifs of heavily draped paint hanging from gestural inverted landscapes dominate the work, an image of concealed place. I keep saying: I still want it to be destabilized. The most recent work is as unstable, environmentally, as I have ever known it to be.
