Japanese Wasabi radish!!!! This is one of the new crops I decided to grow this year. I’m pretty excited about the results! I grew this for fun in one of my small wooden garden beds. I don’t eat sushi so I’m looking up recipes that use wasabi. It helps with digestion, inflammation, and is suspected of having anticancer properties among others. It’s similar to ‘true wasabi’ but is not nearly as finicky or expensive. I use to buy fruit for my grandmother….like a lot. Mostly grapes and plums. She would say “get me some good plums and not those hairy things” (peaches). So naturally I planted plum trees including one named Plumana which is a methley plum. We lost all of our flowers (fruit) with the late freeze but this one survived. Squash!!! Fresh from the garden. I made my sis in love a veggie omelette using this bad boy and had plenty left. These are being grown in metal container. This is my first year using metal containers and I love them. Pros: They are higher so there is less stooping. There has been less pests. They hold a good amount of moisture. Cons: They are heavy and impossible to move once filled. They are expensive. We have a fruit salad (plum, apricot, nectarine, & peach), combo apple, combo plum, combo pear and several combo cherry trees. Combination fruit trees are a great way to grow more varieties in a small space. They are created through a process known as grafting. I will describe grafting in more detail later. After 3 years of practice and tons of failures I’ve finally learned how to root cuttings!! This is a champagne fig. It is a release from LSU and is a cross between the Celeste fig and C1 California caprifig. The Champagne Fig is described as a honey fig and bears medium sized sweet yellow figs with a gold to caramel flesh. Cuttings are a great cost efficient way to grow your home garden or orchard.
