What was a fantastic experience at @howardparkwines in Margaret River a couple week ago. This 1996 Cabernet Merlot was kindly supplied by the friendly cellar door staff, resulting in a great experience. After 28 years the cabernet still has power with medium acid, well integrated velvety tannins and stewed black fruits fruits driving the wine to impressive length. The wine exhibited great balance with age donating pleasant leather, earth and forest floor notes, as well as subtle clove spices. The way it was drinking after a brief decant gives a 96 point rating from me. This past week, we were delighted to host a tasting of premium Willamette Valley wines from Abbot Claim, led by Winemaker Alban Debeaulieu. 🍇 A New Yorker named John F. Abbott pioneered west to Oregon 170 to settle on this hillside ridge and plow its ancient grounds. Cultivated to many crops throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the land was eventually abandoned before it was brought back to life by another pioneer named Antony Beck. A curator and collector at heart, Antony saw the potential of this storied place and set out to restore much of the original 1855 land claim, where vines have proven to thrive. Today, they are in the midst of a revival, nurturing and regenerating the ancient sedimentary soils with fervent devotion to not only the vineyard but the entire ecosystem.
