George is a three-time kidney transplant recipient who uses his lived experience to serve others. George is a kidney transplant advocate and patient health advocate who works in the community to bring awareness to kidney disease and health. George serves on the board of the National Kidney Foundation, Serving the Alleghenies, and works to support he mission and vision of the organization. George has a bachelor’s degree in management from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. George worked for the University of Pittsburgh for 15 years as a senior-level research administrator before retiring in 2020. George is the father of two biological sons, two stepsons, and two stepdaughters. Prior to working as the Assistant Director of Student and Career Services, Jorden served as the Program Coordinator for the Office of New Student Programs at the University of Pittsburgh where he was responsible for managing at $245,000 budget to facilitate and create a Career Preparation Academy for first-generation, Pelleligible, and students of color that were a part of the University of Pittsburgh’s Provost Academy. Dr. Chuck Herring currently serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at South Fayette Township School District, focusing on fostering respect and dignity for all. He co-founded SHOUT (Social Handprints Overcoming Unjust Treatment), a student-led initiative promoting culturally responsive spaces in Western PA schools and has been recognized with awards including one of the SBL 2021 Educators of the Year and the PA School Board Association (PSBA) Innovative School Leader Award. Dr. Herring initiated Project OTIS, a partnership with Howard University to attract and retain educators of color to work in Western PA. Internationally, he was selected by the American Council on Germany for a TransAtlantic dialogue on cultural affirmation and was one of the co-leads for Pennsylvania's Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Task Force. We are so excited to introduce each our of ChangeMakers in the Grand Strand! We are going to start with the awesome Brian DiStefano. “I have practiced law for approximately 20 years in the State of New Jersey as a general practitioner. I have also obtained an insurance broker’s license and opened an independent brokerage approximately three years ago. Although I still maintain a legal practice in New Jersey, I am focusing on building my future here in South Carolina. I have been helping individual retirees for the past 5 years as an insurance agent plan properly for Medicare and retirement. With my legal background, I have been able to help seniors properly navigate through enrollment in the Medicare system. I am also involved in youth sports as an administrator and coach for a local lacrosse club program. I also volunteer as an assistant varsity coach for a local high school team. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a town that had a very successful lacrosse program and I am attempting to help grow the sport here in South Carolina in a similar way. Since both of my children love the sport, it was important to me to help create a program for them to grow as players and individuals. She also represents women injured by defective medical and beauty products. Tope earned her J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law. She formerly served as the South Carolina Association for Justice Women’s Caucus Chair and was appointed in 2021 to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission, which was established to expand access to civil legal justice for low-income and disadvantaged people. Prior to joining We Are Family, they served as the director of education, advocacy, and systems transformation at Teach For America South Carolina. Previously, Domenico held administrative positions in higher education that supported and empowered students of color and LGBTQ+ students and communities. They ran the Bonner Program at the College of Charleston— an access to education leadership program that centers service learning and civic engagement in larger social justice contexts. Domenico also directed the ALANA (African American/Black, Latinx, Asian/Asian American and Native American) Cultural Center and LGBTQ Center at Vassar College, was an academic advisor at Bard College, and was the assistant director of the Multicultural Resource Center at Oberlin College in Ohio. Domenico is one of the co-founders and facilitators of the Transformative Teaching Collective, a predominantly female, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC-owned cooperative that provides social justice education and consultation to non-profit organizations, university faculty and student groups, government organizations, k-12 teachers, volunteer groups, and faith-based organizations. They are also formally certified in social justice mediation from the Social Justice Mediation Institute, UMass Amherst, and has skills in multipartial mediation, facilitation, and conflict resolution. Let us introduce @erinandsmithtrystuff! ——————- Erin leads marketing and communications strategy and execution for all WBENC programs, events and initiatives. She brings significant experience in strategic planning, digital marketing and communications, public and media relations, social media and business development. Throughout her career, Erin has overseen in-house agency teams responsible for all aspects of communications and marketing strategy, planning, oversight and implementation for digital and traditional marketing and public relations. She has also held leadership roles in integrated marketing agencies, working with national brands including Nickelodeon, Carnival Cruise Lines, The Georgia Aquarium and Stanley Black & Decker Security. She has spoken at national and regional conferences, including the Partnership for a Healthier America Summit and the national Legal Marketing Association conference. Erin has achieved her national Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America and previously served as the PRSA South Carolina Chapter President. She is a founding committee member of the American Lung Association South Carolina Lip Sync for Lungs Battle and served as chair in 2019. A native of Charleston, Erin enjoys spending time with her husband Matt, child Smith, their dog, Frank. Let us introduce you to Chris! @the_lorax_one Born in Royal Oak, MI, he started in Boy Scouts at 5 years old and worked up the ranks achieving Eagle Scout in 2008. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2008 as a logistics Soldier and deployed to Kuwait and Bahrain in 2010. Upon return back from Bahrain, he earned his bachelor's degree in Criminology from Georgia Gwinnett College in 2015. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the active duty Army in the infantry. In 2015 he graduated from the infantry officer basic course and moved to Fort Riley, KS, assigned to the First Infantry Division. He was successful in roles as platoon leader, executive officer, General officer aide-de-camp, and company commander. He had several rotations overseas in South Korea and Eastern Europe during this time. He got married to his lovely wife Samantha and had two wonderful kids, Dash and Dutch. Chris became a CrossFit coach part-time in 2022 and has been coaching multiple classes a week ever since. He now is the owner of CrossFit Soda City in Columbia, SC, and is dedicated to teaching others how to be the best version of themselves. #makechange4good

Joined Brownstone Construction Group in 2015 as a Senior Project Manager in the Charleston area, with over 20+ years of Construction Management experience. Received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from NC Agricultural & Technical State Univ., and his Masters in Project Management from Keller Graduate School of Management. He served as a Army Staff Sargent, a proud 2003 − 2004 Operation Iraqi Freedom War Veteran, and National Defense Medal recipient. As a servant leader, Bobby has been a member and volunteer for the National Society of Black Engineers over 22 years, and has served in multiple leadership roles, chapter, regionally and nationally, upholding the torch of the Society and fulfilling the mission every day. Here is the wonder @shalaine.archie! Shalaine is the Director of Women in Philanthropy at The United Way of the Midlands and loves helping people, making connections, event planning, and problem-solving. She has spent most of her career in the public service industry while gaining experiences in local and state government, the non-profit sector, and the private sector. Before working at United Way, Shalaine spent 5 years as the Executive Assistant to former Mayor Stephen Benjamin. That position was a great introduction into the world of government where she first realized she had a voice for advocacy and a desire to learn public policy. Shalaine continued on to United Way of the Midlands where she supported the President and CEO as her Executive Assistant for over a year. She then was promoted to the role she has currently. While philanthropy officer is her primary job function by day, Shalaine also enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, doing hot yoga, and cheering for the USC Women's Basketball Team. Celeste O’Keefe joined the Community Advancement team at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce over a year ago as the Leadership and Programs Coordinator. In this role, she oversees events, programs, and services for Charleston Young Professionals in the areas of professional development, community engagement, connections and policy. She also plays a key role in developing future leaders and supporting the Chamber’s community development initiatives. Celeste develops valuable relationships with our members and identifies community business leaders to serve as mentors for our professional development programs as well as assisting in community event execution. Prior to joining the Chamber team, Celeste worked as an Administrative Director for Victoria Clausen Floral Events where her primary responsibilities included client and vendor coordination and communications for events. She has spent most of her career in hospitality management and event production for organizations like the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore, Hayfields Country Club, Hob Knob and the Baltimore Ravens. Celeste moved from Baltimore, Maryland and earned a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from the University of Delaware. She spent time in Australia studying at the International College of Management Sydney. It was a year of FIRSTS for the freshman of The Neighborhood Academy - first time participating in SIA, presenting on service, achieving Pittsburgh’s Wildcard nomination, being chosen to present at the national level, and the list goes on! The students-athletes of Pittsburgh Hardball Academy - Students In Action earned a Silver Banner and the Community Impact Award at our 2023 End of Year Celebration for their efforts on addressing mental health in youth sports. By surveying nearly 100 students in their organization from dozens of schools on the pressures of prioritizing sports in addition to the other stressors of life as a teenager - this rookie SIA team pledged to "Stop the Stigma" but using grant funds to create t-shirts with this message to encourage their peers to seek support and create conversations about mental health in the student-athlete community. Trinity High School earned a Gold Banner and the award for Meaningful Reflection at Pittsburgh's 2023 End of Year Celebration by sharing their Silent Disco service project, where their SIA team hosted two dances for Autistic and Life Skills students from their middle school as well as a neighboring district's high school. In addition to providing snacks, crafts, and alternate activities for students to ensure it was an inclusive activity that accommodated sensory needs and preferences, the team invited and involved other clubs at their school to support and plans to engage their entire school as the Silent Disco continues expanding and empowering ALL students in their school and surrounding communities. West Allegheny High School earned a Silver Banner and the award for Outstanding Community Partnerships for their work to organize and plan a Prince and Princess Party for children in their community, which offered developmentally appropriate games and activities that focused on improving literacy rates in elementary students. West A SIA partnered with their local library to offer library cards and services to the children that attended, as well. With the proceeds of the event, the team was able to purchase books to donate to the local library, greatly impacting their community by forging connections between elementary and high school students, creating community partnerships, and improving literacy rates amongst the children served. First year SIA team, The Norwin Show Choir achieved the Student Choice Award from their peers, along with a Gold Banner, for their annual caroling extravaganza, which fundraises for the Expressions in Harmony Foundation to "Fill the Stockings" for children at the HEARTH women and children shelter in Pittsburgh, PA. Additionally, they supported other needs of the shelter including upgrading the internet service, filling the pantry, providing each family with swim passes to a local pool, and purchasing winter boots for the children, all with lots of visits for fun activities, holidays, and birthday celebrations in between! Through SIA, this team also started a new initiative, Norwin In Action, to empower the Norwin Show Choir to help families in their community, creating a new legacy in service learning. Fort Cherry SIA team was awarded the Outstanding Sustainability Award around their service work which included hosting 2 workshops with guest speakers from their community for students to learn interviewing skills to better prepare for their futures after high school. In addition to these workshops, and new to this year, the team held a clothing drive to collect donated formal attire for their newly created "Ranger Rack," their sustainable clothing closet, that give students access to appropriate attire for their future endeavors. The team even wore outfits straight off the rack for their presentation to show their commitment to sustainability! Pittsburgh's 2023 "Rookie of the Year" goes to Perry High School's "Positive Perry" SIA service project! This first year team set out to build a culture of positivity within their school by promoting mental health awareness not only through painting lockers as a form of art therapy with words and images of encouragement, but by establishing a bulletin board of resources for students and staff to refer to when in need of mental health support. The Neighborhood Academy, Pittsburgh's 2023 Wildcard Nominee for Multiplying Good's National Youth Summit, co-hosted the "Community Slam" event with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania and the Will Allen Foundation to spread awareness and provide resources around mental health, youth homelessness, and the issue of gun violence. The event brought together young people to enjoy games, a photo booth and DJ, and most importantly, guest speakers on these topics, all while providing a resource fair featuring various community partners and local non-profits, including 2 fellow SIA teams. The team of ninth graders collected donations from event guests including non-perishable food items and clothing, which they donated directly to the community partners in attendance who address the issues these students care about most, connecting the community through service.
