Emotions are a personal and individualized experience…like snowflakes…they’re not the same from person to person. Often we internalize other people’s discomfort with emotions as something “wrong” with what we are feeling or how we are feeling it. When we are told “don’t cry” it over simplifies the complicated process of regulating intense emotions - as though we can flip a switch to stop it and are just choosing not to. This is invalidating and actually increases the likelihood of more intense emotions. For most people, in order to “stop crying” there is a path that needs to be taken to get there. A path that includes noticing your emotion, validating why it makes sense that it’s present, normalizing it, recovering from others invalidation of our experiences, and allowing the emotion to be there, as it comes in waves, while simultaneously regulating the intensity using a variety of skills. For some people, they can tell themselves “stop crying” and it works, for them. These individuals don’t understand why we all can’t do the same and tend to be uncomfortable with our emotions that can’t be “fixed” in the moment. Just because they don’t understand our experience of emotions doesn’t mean our experiences are wrong or defective. Experiencing emotions alone can be tremendously uncomfortable, powerful, scary, and isolating. Having someone to sit with us, in our suffering, without attempting to fix it, is one of the most powerful gestures that can let us know we aren’t alone, we are seen, we are loved. “Go ahead and cry. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and a beautiful day for a neighbor. Mr. Rogers knew what he was talking about. Yesterday yes, all things change. Most people do not know their neighbors today doors are locked. Windows closed. Ring cameras on and people just seem to stare out the window. Yes, life gets busy. People are more secured in their homes don't have time or do not want to bother with the person living next to you. I am not that gal. I live in a little piece of Mayberry. The town is fictional but not my neighborhood. It’s real. It’s safe. It’s friendly. I know my neighbors. We talk. We look out for each other. We help each other. We share meals and laughs. I surprise them with little goodies on their porch and I come home from work, and they have turned on my outside lights watered my flowers and little gifts are scattered around my yard like a scavenger hunt. It’s warm. It’s sweet it's neighborly. I know my neighbors' dogs that they walk in the morning and at night. We say hello. Small talk. Gossip of course and are just friendly folks. The world has taught some of us to be afraid and yes, we should be aware of our surroundings but locking yourself in is not the answer. If you do not know your neighbors maybe start out by saying hi. Introduce yourself it's well-mannered and friendly. You never know when you might need someone or feel lonely and just want to talk for a bit. “Always look for the helpers.” ~ Mr. Rogers While visiting the Sanno Shinto Shrine in Nagasaki this morning, we heard a kitten weakly crying out from an adjacent bush. This tiny creature was covered in bugs and its eyes were crusted over, oozing, and closed. Using Google Translate, a construction worker I approached on a nearby street (the shrine was entirely empty) helped me locate a veterinary practice a 10 minute walk away. When I arrived, while patient, the attendant explained that they do not treat stray cats, especially those brought in by tourists. We brought the kitten back to the shrine, and noticed an elementary school next door. Desperate for help, I flagged down a gentleman inside the front window, and again explained the situation via Google Translate. He immediately motioned for me to follow him down the street, where there was a poster with cats pinned to a notice board. It turns out that Nagasaki has a massive street cat problem, but there is an agency dedicated to helping them. He called this number, and took the kitten from me. I ran down the street to the local mart, and bought kitten food and water, and rushed it back to the school. I am not sure if this helped, but I felt the need to do something. My interactions with these locals in Nagasaki has left an indelible and profound impression on my heart I will never forget. I watched a documentary on Mr Rodgers and it filled my heart with so much warmth. Mr. Rodgers taught us so much about how to work through hard things. CAPE COD BIRTHDAY: Nantucket Adventure Part I Sylvia and I take an early ferry over to Nantucket. After a yummy breakfast - we went off to find St Paul’s Episcopal Church. Mr Rogers and his family had a cottage on Nantucket for decades and attended St Paul’s. The congregation installed a commemorative plaque near his family’s pew.
