Great conversation with @onebookcase after our first play of Septima from @mindclash_games . He felt like the bag draw trials were too random and too impactful and that it left a sour note on an otherwise enjoyable game. I thought the randomness was both thematically fitting and had other ways of being balanced or mitigated. Of course, I can’t be sure after only one play that such is the case, and I also wonder if I have winner’s or owner’s bias. What I am sure of is that I love the visual design of this game as well as the theme. Mindclash always creates gorgeous, thematic experiences, and this is one I’m eager to try again. I’m not sure if I buy that is a particularly lighter game than their other games though. Sure, actions are limited to your cards, but each point-scoring task requires multiple steps, and each element feels hard fought at times. I still felt plenty of brain burn, and I think the current BGG weight of 3.59 will likely rise over time, not lower. The game has plenty of systems to manage (rituals? Healing? Trials? Potion making?) and the threat of witch hunters makes matching actions dangerous—you can’t draw too much attention by working together. The icons are overall clear, but there are a lot of them. Fortunately the rulebook index explains most cards clearly. I think the disagreement between Mike and I highlights why this won’t get the same traction as Anachrony or Trickerion, where very little randomness is at play in the system. There certainly IS an element to that here, I just think it fits the theme and overall design. Maybe it’s for people like me: thematic gamers who still love Euros and don’t mind if sometimes fate isn’t on your side. Is that you too? Have you played Septima? One of my favorite new-to-me games of 2023! I first learned Ultimate Railroads (by @hig_games and @zmangames_ ) by playing blind on BGA, randomly clicking on things without first having read any rules. This, you might be surprised to learn, is not an ideal way to learn a new game with unique scoring rules. I’ve come a long way since then, including actually reading the rulebook, and had a chance recently to introduce the worker placement game to my wife. It’s one of our favorite mechanisms, so I had confidence it would hit, and it really did! It goes without saying that the game is excellent, but I think part of what makes it so good is the variety of paths you can choose from. I only won by a few points because Amelia focused hard on factories and managed to hold her lead for most of the game; I only squeaked by thanks to an end game scoring card. I’m really impressed with this production as well. Having all four versions (Russian, German, American, Asian, and a solo version) in the box is awesome, and I especially appreciate the logical organization of the simple but effective cardboard organizers. This is an evergreen—one we’ll be coming back to for years. It's #meeplemonday and today I'm talking about Dwellings of Eldervale Legendary Edition by @breaking_games and designed by Luke Laurie! Dwellings is one of my favorite games from the last few years, and despite that I couldn't make myself get the Legendary upgrade pack for it. My main reason for not getting the upgrade pack is because of the sound bases. I feel like the game is super solid, and doesn't need to rely on a gimmick of roaring monsters when you move them. Fortunately though I made a friend who does have the Legendary upgrade pack, and I got to teach him the game and give these sound bases a whirl! My feelings were confirmed, that while the sound adds in an extra thematic note, it's just completely unnecessary. I will say that the Legendary Edition does have a feature that I absolutely like. It has an alternate set of monster miniatures for each color, that also have their own special abilities. Personally I would love to add on these additional monsters, but the sound bases hold me back every time I think about buying this upgrade pack. Happy #meeplemonday and today I wanted to highlight my newest game with awesome meeples, Castles By The Sea by @brotherwisegames This is only a first impression of the game, but I didn't want to wait until Friday to talk about it! What more can I say other than this is a game set in a whimsical fantasy world full of Sandcastles, babys, dogs, stray volleyballs, and more! The theme is amazing, and integrated very well into the mechanics of the game. You can build your castles, deploy your Shorelings, but unfortunately like all Sandcastles these structures are only temporary. Hazards, such as the aforementioned baby, dog, and volleyball, can destroy what you've built. This costs you scoring opportunities, but can allow you to build back bigger and better than before! All in all my first impression of Castles By The Sea is very positive. The components are great, the theme is fantastic, and the gameplay is simple yet puzzley and tactile. My only complaint is that the meeples are only screen printed on a single side, and the coloring on the screen printed wooden hazard tokens isn't as vibrant as I would like. These are minor nit picks with the deluxe wooden component upgrades, and not the actual game itself. During the week, we relieved our stress levels by playing Articulate!, created by @drumondpark Players: 4-20 Playtime: 5mins - 1hr (depending on the number of people playing) Ages: 12+ How to Play? Players must describe/ act out a word from 6 different categories ( Object, Nature, Person, Action, World & Random) to their team as quickly as possible before the sand in the hourglass runs out. The teams move around the board based on the number of words correctly guessed. My Thoughts? (Cameron) I and the rest of the group had many laughs playing this game. I particularly enjoyed it whenever a specific person would over-explain a word, which in the end could have been simplified very easily to get a point for your team. We did however diverge a bit from the regular way to play the game, by making the game a free-for-all between the group & each person would describe a word from one of the colours chosen & the rest will have to be the first to guess the word to gain a point. And we would play until all the cards in the deck ran out. Overall, I had a lot of fun & many laughs playing this game. And it can be a really quick game if you are short on time and want to play it to lift your spirits up.
