It greeted me with a storm during the night, awakened with an incessant rain and waited on the seafront with gigantic waves that scared the few tourists who approached to immortalize them. You let yourself be discovered a little under the evening lights to be able to breathe your normality without tourists, with the few inhabitants going out to eat. The memories I have of you are the bubbly waves, the souvenirs bought under the downpour and the many hours of queue on the return journey. Be sure that I will come back to see you. By the Seaside (1952, watercolour, ink & gouache, 23 x 35 cm) I just collected this one from @leonardjoelauctions - such a nice work! I’ve got a suspicion that this was given (to Bill Grant) in 1952 and the drawing was signed and dated then. I believe it was made in 1948 in a series of beach drawings made for a scholarship when Brack lived in Mentone. These eventually lead to the 1949 oil painting called “The Beach” which was later destroyed by Brack. The majority of these 1948 drawings are in the @nationalgalleryaus collection (and have been posted on this account in the past). If you go through them in detail you will find the same pier, a very similar umbrella and a few nearly identical figures in the drawings. Who knows! Brack might have simply returned to the same spot and made another drawing a few years later. #8 Open Water Swim Comp for the 2024 season. The Mentone Marathon Swim: 2.5km. Now this could be one the last of the season, so I thought I'd place another silly bet with myself and swim 2.5km at this beauty of a beach. I haven't had a drink in 7 weeks, but everyone needs a vice so I'm still smoking and finishing work at 2-3am and possibly inhaling a half a pack of dartaroonies - makes the odds interesting, but the dip goes on. The wake up this morning at 630am, was a testing one, but for the love beachus you always swim on. Conditions picture perf. Wet set suit not required. And mission complete for swimming my longest ocean swim to date. Legs are a tad heavy, mainly due to sprinting to the train station which I had no idea where it was, so I can get back into Fadlands. Mount San Antonio, aka "Mt. Baldy," is a 10,064 ft summit in the San Gabriel Mountains on the border of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties and an ever-present (air quality permitting) feature of our horizon in the Inland Empire. The Tongva call the mountain Yoát or Joat, which means snow, and the Mohave call it Avii Kwatiinyam. The name Mount San Antonio was probably bestowed by Antonio Maria Lugo, owner of a rancho near present-day Compton circa 1840, in honor of his patron saint, Anthony of Padua. I grew up with the San Bernardino Mountains as our backdrop and indicator of true north, and I always considered it a blessing to live in such a valley among giants.
