Today, Remember The Wild had the privilege of spending some of the afternoon with the Young Ocean Innovators! Supported by unimelb, with Alyssa Seckinger-Crow at the helm, this amazing group of high schoolers are learning about our amazing Naarm/Port Phillip, and working on solutions to tackle some of the wicked problems threatening our oceans. Together, we spent some time just being in nature - listening to the waves, noticing the warmth of the sun and investigating the flotsam and jetsam. We discussed the extinction of experience and the cycle of disconnection and disaffection that fuels the great crises facing humanity and the planet. We talked about the ways we interrupt that cycle and educate, inspire and empower our friends and communities to act for nature. Port Melbourne is a great location for this program. A human-made, groomed beach surrounded by apartment blocks and heavy industry, but still home to wildlife like Rakali and still providing much needed, much loved #bluespace for the community. As we tuned in, I was quite surprised to find that despite being surrounded by an industrial port and busy suburb, the roar of the water and the blasting wind (which felt like it had recently left Antarctica) completely drowned out the sound of the built environment. It was still possible to find grounding in the crunchy sand, and magic in the play of the setting sun through the bright green sea lettuce, like stained glass! After a six week program, the Young Ocean Innovators are now working on their pitch presentations for the Showcase, on Tuesday 14th May, at unimelb. Have you walked past this mural and wondered who Renee Scott was? Renee Scott was a much loved entertainer and larger-than-life personality of St Kilda, especially well known as a star of Jan Hillier's Pokey's show at the Prince of Wales Hotel in the 1980s and '90s. Renee was born Raymond Kenneth Brown in 1951, and began working life as a carpenter. A moment of revelation came when he was exposed to the Les Girls Revue, the cross-dressing extravaganza at the Ritz Hotel in Fitzroy Street. Thereafter, Scott maintained with characteristic wit: ''I've got my mother's features and my father's fixtures.'' As well as being known for her performing prowess, Scott was also a noted presence as she walked around St Kilda with an exotic bird perched on her shoulder. Renee Scott passed away in 2012, and it is recorded that a crowd of about 500 gave her three standing ovations at her funeral.
