There will be an opening reception from 5:00-8:30 on First Friday, May 3rd, as well as a closing reception on First Friday, June 7th. I will also give an informal talk from 3-4:00 on Sunday, June 9th. Since First Friday is often crowded and it’s sometimes hard to talk and see the work, I will be in the gallery from 2-4:00 on the Saturdays and Sundays following the opening and closing receptions: May 4th and 5th, and June 8th and 9th. On Mon I hit my 100th km of swimming for the year & in that moment I locked in my decision for Oceanman - I’m tackling the 10km! Officially registered & officially petrified 😬 I wrestled with the wise words of Coach Mas for a couple of weeks. In a moment of doubt amid sea sickness fears he said - I think you can do it, it’s just whether you want a gruelling 10km or a fast 5km. I’ve dwelled on this so much. Working in the industry hasn’t helped. I see athletes far more advanced on the Ironman circuit than me, some of which have said they’d never do an Oceanman. Imposter syndrome hit really hard. Then I was reminded when I saw that 100th km that I trained for a 10km swim not 5km & more importantly I was reminded of my why. This journey was never about going fast for me. It was always about challenging my fears & trying something crazy each year. 2021 - first solo HM 2022 - first solo FM 2023 - first 6.5km ocean swim + first 12hr hike + first 100km tri & first solo 50km run As I always say - no superstar results - just me putting myself out of my comfort zone. My 2024 plans were all about getting better at things I’ve already done (which I still want to do) but I’m missing that scare-the-shit-out-of-me factor. So I will do what I said I would & attempt my 1st 10km ocean swim next month 🥹 But wait there’s more … I want to remind ourselves that we have choices in life: inspire or discourage & listen or ignore. We can choose to be the person that tells ppl they CAN do it when they talk about their goals. And most prob they will. Or at least confidently try. Or, we can choose to be the person who makes people doubt themselves & most probably they won’t take a step further. But in the same vein we can also choose who we listen to & who we ignore. Choose wisely cos people’s goals & your dreams are on the line. With that, I’m signing off from story sharing cos this is a mental game as much as a physical one. Need to get back into the right headspace to complete this mission. The only other time I pickled was a few months ago, & AGAIN, I was toooo keen ( I’m not being toooo keen anymore ), & I had to ask the surfers out past the wreck if they’d give me a tow-in. It was BIG surf. There were a bunch of them & I felt SUPER embarrassed - like they didn’t know I’d been swimming here for 32 years, like I was an English Tourist (‘coz I goddamn look like one with pale skin & zinc application in excess). Luckily one surfer was super nice & super hot ( looked like Jason Moama. Fk. Maybe it was)! He paddled against the strong current while I flippered away holding on to his leg rope. Like… the swim of shame🙃. Tried to make “light” conversation🙄. He dropped me off just before the break. Did a practice run this morning with the boat and feeding. Just a short swim (about 1km I think) with few feed stops - found some things that need to be tweaked before the big day, figured out boat placement while swimming etc. but overall an awesome morning and lots of learning done by the whole crew! Oh and got to try out the Form goggles! Looking forward to trying them in the pool tomorrow morning!

Celebrating my 550 consecutive cold water swim / dip 🙏🏼🌀🌊 Furthest distance in one swim 3000m 🌀 furthest previous swim has been 2700m so only a jumping up in managable incriments. This morning I swam on a high tide (but going out) from Charlestown's small beach to the rock between Charlestown and Duporth. I usually stop and turn at the rock but today I swam beyond it. Then turned and swam across the bay to the furthest buoy between Charlestown and Carlyon Bay. I was beyond the carved cave in the rocks and then turned and swam back to the Duporth rock and beyond... Then back to the beach ✨ I thought it might take an hour so I was really pleased with my time, almost 55 minutes. I can really struggle to warm up after around 46 minute swims but the sun is beautiful today. One of the things that I love about my @aqua.lab.project is that I’m not just sitting in my studio thinking and making (which I love to do) but I’m also making this work with my whole body and it’s experiences. From planning our next swim, and driving the mountain roads, to joining up with my swim buddies and planning our swim route and finally jumping in and experiencing the different waters, temperature, colors, light, winds and currents. While color is a big part of this project I also love the shapes and patterns that my body is making while I record my swim routes with my Garmin watch. In many of the pieces I’m bringing together those shapes and colors with the data I collect: date, water and air temperature, longitude and latitude. My Aqua Lab exhibit runs from May 3rd - June 9th, 2024 @minnow.arts in Santa Cruz. There will be an opening reception from 5:00-8:30 on First Friday, May 3rd, as well as a closing reception on First Friday, June 7th. I will also give an informal talk from 3-4:00 on Sunday, June 9th. Since First Friday is often crowded and it’s sometimes hard to talk and see the work, I will be in the gallery from 2-4:00 on the Saturdays and Sundays following the opening and closing receptions: May 4th and 5th, and June 8th and 9th. DH Lawrence wrote: Water is H2O, hydrogen two parts, oxygen one, but there is also a third thing, that makes it water and nobody knows what that is… Aqua Lab is an attempt to define that “third thing” through open water swimming and the collection of data including: swim dates, water and air temperature, latitude, longitude and elevation of swims, the collection of earth pigment from the shoreline of lakes, recording swim routes, and photographing the color of the water. All of these elements will come together in the gallery with a watery and swimmerly installation.
