Seven years ago today, I woke up in a hospital room with Sam. It was the day after his first heroin overdose, at 17. Overnight, everything I once thought to be true changed. When I look back on that time, I am grateful that I was convinced that Sam would find recovery and live. I am grateful that I fought as long and hard as I did, even after Sam gave up. Most of all, however, I am grateful that I did not know that Sam would eventually die from his addiction and that I would be sentenced to hell for the rest of my life. I didn't need to know that then and it kept my fight pure and loyal and steadfast. I think we should be grateful that we can't predict the future and use that ignorance to live courageously and free. To fight every battle as though we know we are going to win, with relentless confidence and determination. Today, I am crushed with grief so deep it can only be softened with gratitude that I tried so damn hard. On November 20, 2022, Curt Lind (80) (pictured) was attacked by a samurai sword wielding methhead squatter who had invaded his property. He stumbled to his neighbor's house with the sword stuck through his back. When Vallejo Police finally arrived, one squatter was staring at the sky. A second squatter was oozing blood from 3 gun shots. Vallejo Police arrested two other squatters, took the bleeding one to the hospital and dragged the dead body to a dumpster. Vallejo is a mess. On March 1, 2024 a man was killed by gunfire at Alabama and Butte in Vallejo. On March 5, 2024, a man was detailing his auto in Vallejo when a bitch hopped in and stole the car. She was arrested. On March 6, 2024 an Arsonist firebombed the Target store in Vallejo causing $1 million worth of damage. On February 24, 2024, a truck driver was attacked and shot in Vallejo. He ran into a convenience store. This store was then looted by the Perps. Sixteen months ago today, I got the phone call that shattered my life. Sam's 8 year battle with addiction was over and he was gone. His body discovered in a field by a child, it couldn't get any worse. It's all a blur now. The phone call, the long drive home, planning his funeral, and just surviving each moment felt impossible. I remember being stifled with relentless agony, day after day. Not wanting to live and also not being willing to die, I felt like I was stuck on a conveyer belt in hell with no chance of escape. Thank you to my friends and family who have stood by me through this journey. Happy New Year, I feel ready for 2024. I have officially survived 2023 without Sam. Every single day I have faced the facts of his death: I will never hug him again. He won't ever give me the one and only tattoo I was ever going to get. He doesn't get another chance to choose sobriety. I will never hold his babies. He will never wear the clothes I keep for him in my closet. I won't ever hear him tell me he loves me again. He will be missed at every holiday, wedding, funeral, and celebration. His void will never dim, only grow in the same way his life should have. And, I will never again feel his human reception of the unbreakable bond we share forever. These are the reasons I still cry most days. These are the reasons that the only way to know this pain is to live it. After Sam died, I realized how much of the world is walking with profound grief at any give time. Like a world within the world. We don't even realize it exists until we are in it ourselves. I believe that great loss deserves a voice rather than to be shoved under a rug like a thing to be ignored. It's the big scary monster that we all run from until it catches us, as it always does at some point during this life. And, when we do have to face it, we can either turn towards it or away from it, but it won't give us peace until we eventually deal with it. I don't have the same relationship with snow that I used to. It used to mean change and fun and snowshoeing. Now it feels closer to cold and death and loneliness. I want to wake up to new snow and feel excited but I don't. Instead, part of me always wonders if anyone else's son or daughter's body is just lying out in the cold, waiting to be found. This week, I ran into an old acquaintance for the first time since Sam died and they didn't mention him or ask how I was. In fact, they asked about the kids and then hustled alway really fast before I got past the first one, but not before telling me about all of their own kids first. I find that while I am the one living through this, the thing that often separates me the most from others is their own discomfort around Sam's death, not my own. I don't get the luxury of pretending it isn't true. When I wake up to a layer of snow on Sam's empty chair, it is a stark reminder of what I have lost. Today, I hope to play outside for a while as a reminder that snow and cold is more than scary, it's life. I heard someone say that when we are grieving someone, we not only miss that person, but also who we were with that person. I felt those words. I was Sam's warrior. I was his advocate. I could see that he would have a big beautiful life if he could get past his addiction. Now he is gone and I am here to reminisce on what could have been. His brilliant future that existed only in my mind. The little Sam's that might have been. The conversations that won't happen. I miss the badass me that knew Sam would recover, even if it was out of naivety, but I don't regret being that person. We all need to know that others believe in us.
