Mixotrophic plankton can provide a buffer for marine ecosystems during heat waves. While many species suffered from the extreme ocean temperatures, mixotrophs thrived by combining photosynthesis and consumption of prey. These versatile organisms play a crucial role in marine food webs, especially during heat waves, by helping to mitigate the effects of increased stratification and nutrient depletion. Research indicates that mixotrophs, particularly generalist species, are essential for sustaining ecosystems in the face of climate change-induced heat waves. This research published in January 2024 shows that mixotrophs could provide stronger resilience to the food web. When the ocean layers get stratified, the cycling of nutrients gets disturbed. The role of the mixotrophs is to link those layers by performing heterotrophy and autotrophy. As the researchers say, it “provides a buffer for ecosystems.” By constituting between 38% and 61% of the biomass among the ciliates and the dinoflagellates, they seem to be key species to maintaining the ocean’s health when marine heat waves become more frequent. Euglena gracilis is a freshwater species of single-celled alga in the genus Euglena. It has secondary chloroplasts, and is a mixotroph able to feed by photosynthesis or phagocytosis. It has a highly flexible cell surface. Euglena are typically found in damp and aquatic (fresh and saltwater) environments. Euglena blooms create color changes in water, usually a greenish color. Euglena are both autotrophs and heterotrophs. Autotrophs are classified as organisms that make their own food by way of photosynthesis. Heterotrophs are organisms that obtain food by way of other organisms. Euglena can be found in ponds, streams, lakes, rivers, marshes, and brackish water. #microscopemonday #species #bacteria #culture #medicine #microbiology #labatory #euglena #alga #photosynthesis #organisms #mixotroph #motivation #resislence #grit #hardwork #persistence #college #education #nursing #research #consistency #promotion #achievement

Planktober drawing 7: Strombidium Strombidium is an important group that is a very prevalent and ecologically important part of the microplankton community. After researchers started applying fluorescent microscopy to plankton studies in the 80s it became evident that many plankton species, including Strombidium, that had previously been assumed to be heterotrophs (obtaining nutrients through the consumption of other organisms) were in fact mixotrophs, meaning that in addition to consuming prey they contain chloroplasts that allow them to synthesise their own energy. What is interesting, and important for effectively including this group in foodwebs and ecological models, is that there are two broad ways in which a mixotroph can be “mixing”. Either by being a “constitutive” mixotroph if they have permanent photosynthesizing abilities, or by being “acquired” mixotrophs, if they obtain the power of making energy from sunlight by consuming chloroplast containing creatures, thus still making their independent “autotroph” side dependent on their “heterotroph” side. . https://www.etsy.com/shop/Roughforradio . #inktober #inktober2021 #planktober #strombidium #mixotroph #ciliate #plankton #foodweb #marineecology #marinebiology #sciencecommunication #scienceillustration #sciart #scicomm #planktonicecology #microscopy #oceanart #photosynthesis #diving #marinebiologistsofinstagram

Marine ciliate Mesodinium rubrum is a mixotroph - a ciliate that can use both photosynthesis and feeding as its sources of energy. To photosynthesise, M. rubrum steals chloroplasts and other organelles from its prey and preserves it to use for its own nutrition.  By studying acquired phototrophy and the cellular control of sequestered cryptophyte prey chloroplasts in M. rubrum, researchers @uitnorgesarktiske found that M. rubrum steals a cell’s nucleus along with its chloroplasts to serve them essential gene products. Find out more about the study in Andreas Altenburger’s post on the Nature Portfolio Microbiology Community: https://go.nature.com/3onQaXT (link in bio) The research was published in The ISME Journal. I was on a fieldwork trip in Austria last month trying to find out the link between environmental conditions and grazing by mixotrophic protists in lake Lunz. A pretty intense 3 weeks of work. Of course the science was nice, but the beers on the pier at night with my great colleagues alternated with some view of the milkyway above is what will definitely stick with me.
