I’ve taken up a new hobby and started a new job. I also had another pregnancy loss. What a wild few weeks? I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m working on a project with dandelions, and I’m very excited! Part of that project means examining them under the microscope, and I thought I’d share part of what I’ve been learning. This is the bilobed stigma of a dandelion ray floret. Silicoflagellates 😍 Today’s image is another non diatom one. What you see is something equally small (and equally beautiful 😊), a silicoflagellate. These are single-celled marine algae which (like diatoms) have a skeleton made from SiO2. While there is relatively few recent species, there are a lot more fossil species known. (@fossil.diatoms has published quite a few cool papers on them 😅) This one here belongs to the genus Naviculopsis and I believe it could be N. constricta. I found it in diatom material from Mors, Denmark. 🇩🇰 The photo was taken with a 100x oil objective and a 1,2 oil darkfield condenser. For the first day of my Oregon Naturalist Ecoregion course, I got to go back to Dawson Creek Wetlands. We were guided by Shea Fuller of the @wetlandsconservancy on an awesome adventure through a spring wetland, complete with Oregon rain showers. Afterwards, we went to the Brookwood @hillsborolibrary to view water and moss/lichen samples under the microscope.
