LOPEZ BOATHOUSE, 1936, Iloilo city, Philippines 🇵🇭 Architect: Fernando Ocampo Eugenio Lopez Sr. constructed his lavish estate, known as the Lopez Boat House, in 1936 in La Paz, Iloilo. This Art Deco/Moderne mansion stands four stories tall and resembles an old ocean liner, featuring a tower leading to a viewing deck and a spiral staircase on the ground floor. Inside, the decor showcases 1930s-style furniture. From 1992 to 1997, the PAREF Westbridge School for boys leased the Boat House. Medical Dental Building, 1925 / 1950 This downtown terra cotta behemoth is an expression of the two extremes between ostentation and minimalism.  While both sides of this building are harmoniously unified with the same cladding in cream-colored terra cotta tiles, there is a clear distinction between the 1920s ornamental Gothic Revival half, and the minimalist Modern half.  When it was fist built, the massing had more of the Gothic asymmetry by the stepped tower to the left, but its jarring impact has been dampened by the boxy modernist addition.  This building shares the same block as Nordstrom, which interestingly has both a decorative early 20th half and a Moderne half, but these are separated vertically, not laterally. The 20th century tribute to medieval architecture is actually built of state-of-the-art concrete construction, having been erected in less than a year by the A.W. Quist Company, as opposed to the multi-century construction duration of cathedrals built by monks and stonemasons. The structure consists of octagonal, cast-in-place, reinforced concrete columns with concrete floor slabs over concrete pan joists spaced on 24" centers.  In fact, this building at the time of construction was the third-tallest building in the world to exclusively use reinforced concrete construction.  What were the other top two buildings at the time?  I don’t know, but I will let you figure that out. The terra-cotta cladding on this building was manufactured by the Washington Brick, Lime & Sewer Pipe Company of Clayton, Washington.  The original Gothic half was designed by architect John Alfred Creutzer, and the Moderne half was designed by Seattle architect William Henry Fey. As its name implies, this building was designed to be a new health center, conceived by doctors who wanted to establish a "real medical center in Seattle."  Surprisingly, the building continues to house medical and dental practices, among other tenants. . . . . . #downtownseattle #gothicrevival #modernearchitecture #modernarchitecture #terracottaarchitecture

DAY 208. RIBA NO.66 PORTLAND PLACE. The last few weeks have seen multiple visits to London and especially to this wonderful building that houses one of the best collections of architectural and design material. They say a PhD researcher should immerse themselves in their period of history and I can't think of a more apt building for my studies. Designed by George Grey Wornum in the 1930s, just when Betty Joel was forging her furniture and interior design business and also working with leading architects of the day. Working here is like stepping back in time into her world. My photos don't do justice, there are so many details to admire, the doors, the proportions of the windows, the staircases, the materials. There's a great cafe and bookshop, if you're interested in architecture of the Moderne period it's worth making a detour to enjoy. #riba #modernearchitecture #artdecobuildings #lifeofaphdresearcher #archivalwork #bettyjoel

FRAYSER BAUHAUS, built in 1946, corner of North Thomas and Floyd Avenue, Memphis, USA 🇺🇸 Architect unknown The architectural design unmistakably reflects the influence of Bauhaus modernist principles from the post-World War II period. Described by the AlA as embodying Art Moderne and hailed as “the finest illustration of the Bauhaus-inspired International Style in Memphis,” the building originally served as the residence of Maxwell McCall Millstead, who was responsible for developing a nearby subdivision and the Cherry Road subdivision in East Memphis. This house was later converted into a doctor’s office. Producer Dana Gabrion has acquired the property with intentions to restore it to its original residential purpose. YATES APARTMENTS, 1934, at 801 Nanjing West Road, Shanghai, China 🇨🇳 Designed by the Chinese architect Luke Him Sau (Lu Qian Shou) Originally constructed as the Bank of China, Tong Fu Rd branch on the ground floor, with the Yates Apartments occupying the upper floors, this configuration remains unchanged today. Situated on a narrow plot adjacent to Nanjing Road W., the Yates Apartments is gracefully curved at its southern end. The building, accommodating both apartments and banking facilities, was erected on a slender plot at the intersection of Yates Road, hence its name, Yates Apartments. The architect’s skillful utilization of the limited space is evident, transforming a 100 square meter site into a functional area of 1,000 square meters. The ground and first floors used as banks are faced in stone, while bricks are used throughout the rest of the facade. “This is a strange house built on a deformed site which made it very hard to arrange the layout,” Luke wrote in an article in the 1936 journal “The Chinese Architect.” (shine cn) (Photos source: trip com; Zhang Xuefei / SHINE) collage by SJ @architectonictravels #londonsuburbia #artdeco #artdecostyle #artdecouk #artdecoarchitecture #artdéco #artdecoliverpool #artdecodesign #artdecodesign #artdecohouse #architectonictravels #other peopleshomes #someartdecolove #artdeco #modernism #artnouveau #artdecostyle #brussels #architecture #archstreamline #modernearchitecture #1930sarchitecture #1930architecture #Interwarmodernism #artdecobuilding #artdecointerior #interieurartdeco #urbex #architecture_hunter #picoftheday #worldartdecodayitecturedetails #showusyourartdeco #31daysofdeco

CONWAY ATKINS HOUSE, Dover Heights, NSW, Australia 🇦🇺 Note: Original architect not mentioned in the source… Renovation architectural team: Sam Crawford Architects The initial house was constructed in 1949, showcasing the Inter-War Functionalist design, with Streamline Modern elements, influenced by the European modernism and by the nautical and transportation elements of Art Deco. This house was one of fifteen projects shortlisted in the “House in a Heritage Context” category for the 2017 Houses Awards. The architects aimed to blend the assertive character of the old house with contemporary Australian living by mainly working within the original property’s fabric, listed as a local heritage item. Inspired by the humble materials their goal was to subtly reinterpret and enhance this design language. During the Second World War, the Nazis converted it into a concentration camp, and the fair pavilions suffered damage from bombing raids. OCEAN TERMINAL, late 40s, Southampton, Hampshire, UK 🇬🇧 Ocean Terminal was built alongside Ocean Dock as a passenger terminal for liner passengers. It was opened on the 31st of July 1950 by Prime Minister, Clement Atlee, and the first ship to use the terminal was the Queen Elizabeth, the next day, on 1st August 1950. The last liner to use it was its successor the QE2, in December 1980. It was designed by C.B. Dromgoole, who at the time was architect to the British Transport Commission. The Art Deco-style Ocean Terminal, once considered luxurious, boasted a railway platform and 21 lifts connecting various floors. It featured six escalators and a visitors balcony along the roof, offering amenities such as waiting rooms, baggage areas, and shops. With media interest in celebrities adding to its allure, the terminal was a pinnacle of luxury at the time, complete with train services to London and facilities for luggage and ship stores. It measured 1297 feet in length and contained a railway platform on its lower floor. There were six escalators to deal with 4.000 persons per hour in each direction. The Ocean Terminal was demolished in 1983. 518 W Prospect St, 1960 When seen from the street, this Mid-century Modern home on the slope of Queen Anne is deceptively small. What looks like a cottage-sized home rising from the landscaped hillside actually continues further aft and rises up another story, amounting to a total floor area of 3,140 ft². The portion of the home that is visible from the street falls into one of the common archetypes of Midcentury Modern American homes. The shallow gabled roof with overhanging eaves, exposed wooden beams, and especially the fully glazed elevation of the space below the gable was one of the more popular residential forms in the 1950s and 1960s. Such homes can be seen as decendants of the Minimal Traditional archetype, and balances avant-garde Modernism with relaxed lifestyles. . . . . . #queenanneseattle #midcenturymodern #gabledmodern #seattlesnow #modernearchitecture

SMITH HOUSE, 1929-1930, 189 S, South Hudson Avenue, Hancock Park, Los Angeles City Council District 4, USA 🇺🇸 Architect: Clarence J. Smale Built in Zigzag Moderne style (Zigzag Moderne is a subset of the broader Art Deco movement) is characterized by geometric shapes, symmetry and repetition, streamlined forms, and decorative motifs influenced by technology and modernity, a sense of luxury and sophistication… This Zig-Zag Moderne is extremely elegant. APARTMENT BUILDING AT ACUTE ANGLE, 1931, Avenue Nouvelle 84, Nouvelle 84, Etterbeek, Brussels, Belgium 🇧🇪 Architect: Coppé Vital A unique architecture due to its triangular location, a building with multiple windows, including those on the rotunda which embrace the corner, and projections that punctuate the two facades. 3912 48th Ave NE, 1940 This Laurelhurst home is one of the more pure expressions of the International Style, in the vein of early European Modernism as imported by Seattle architect Paul Thiry 5 years earlier. I don't believe that Thiry designed this particular home, but it was very likely influenced by his earlier works like that on E Boston Terrace. Note the (nearly) strict adherence to boxy rectangular forms, the white stucco cladding, industrial horizontal windows, and the use of glass blocks. There is a subtle concession to American Art / Streamline Moderne architecture with the rounded corners of the entrance canopy and 2nd story bay, as well as the porthole window . . . . . #internationalstyle #earlymodernism #LaurelhurstSeattle #modernearchitecture #bauhaus #artmoderne

Sailor's Union / Crocodile, 1954 The new home to one of Seattle’s most beloved music venues was actually once strongly associated with Seattle’s labor union movement, and is one of the last vestiges of Moderne architecture in the city before the International Style and its many subvariants reigned supreme. Belltown was apparently once a hotspot for labor union halls constructed in the years following WWII, and this was one of the largest and most prominent of the numerous halls in the neighborhood. As the name would suggest, this hall originally represented primarily unlicensed sailors that worked on U.S. flag vessels. Since this hall needed to accommodate the transient nature of its members, this building included an expansive hiring hall, offices, gymnasium, café, bar, cigar store, barber shop and showers, 22 small apartments. Interestingly, this building was completed the same year as the Best Picture-winning film "On the Waterfront." I highly recommend this film if you want to see a highly romanticized but gritty depiction of the lives of longshoremen and union violence of the same time period, but on the East Coast. The level of violence in the film may seem incomparable to reality, but consider the fact that during Seattle’s "battle at Smith Cove" between union members and police, submachine guns, tear gas, and many injuries were part of the real story. This deceptively simple building is clad with blue-green terra cotta tile on the second story (now painted blue) and Roman brick veneer and more tile (now painted black) on the lower stories. Wide courses of terra cotta colored terra cotta run below above and below the second story, contrasting with the colored tiles. The terra cotta cladding on this building is one of the relatively few post-war applications of the material. The original aluminum industrial windows have unfortunately been replaced following the latest renovation to the building. The fluting of the redish terra-cotta and the inward curving walls leading to the main entrance give this building a subtle, but distinctly Moderne touch.

The Baldwin / Horizon House, 1955 Five years after the completion of Grosvenor House / Skye Apartments, this First Hill tower is the culmination of Seattle architect Earl W. Morrison’s series of apartment high-rises that spanned many styles and increasingly became more minimalist with the rise of Modernism. This is the end of Morrison’s story, as he happened to die on the same year this building was complete. To start, the design is admittedly dystopian, does not reflect well on the merits of Modernism, and is easily overlooked. However, some insight may be gleaned by briefly reflecting on its design within the context of architectural history and comparing it to Morrison’s earlier designs and other designs that came after. As similar as this tower is Skye Apartments, the Baldwin stands apart as severely minimalist due to its oppressive massing and lack of incised spandrels. In comparison to the previous projects that wee variations on the H-shape, the L-shaped Baldwin, with one massive elevation facing University street, is jarring. The slightly setback elevation to the east appears to be an addition made to the tower at a later date. Unlike the past two apartment towers by Morrison that were covered here, this tower was never the victim of contemporary recoloring, so what you see is the original scheme of light beige planar façade surfaces accented with darker beige spandrels. This apartment tower was constructed before the I-5 scar was carved through downtown Seattle and a portion of it was subsequently capped with Freeway Park, but the Modern tower and Brutalist public space are well integrated and complementary. This building is now known as Horizon House, a retirement community consisting of about 595 residences. Soon, a lower wing of Horizon will be replaced with a new Mithun-designed 202-unit west tower, but the existing tower next door will remain. . . . . . #firsthillseattle #pillhill #earlymodernism #internationalstyle #modernearchitecture
