Alexandria or Alex was a 20 year old junior at Michigan State University when she was fatally shot on campus by a gun man on a Monday evening. She sadly passed away from her injuries. ~Alex was described as “star Athlete” & “one of the most caring people in the world”. She grew up in Clawson, Michigan & she graduated high school at “Clawson High School” in 2020. She was studying at MSU to be a forensic scientist. Everyone said that Alex was a “role model” to all & she was truly loved by everyone. She was very well mannered & always smiling. The sports Alex played were, softball, basketball, & volleyball. She was also a straight A student, teachers had nothing but nice things to say about her. Alex was the type of person that just exemplified kindness everyday in her life. She went out of her way to make people feel better about themself. She was very compassionate, she helped kids in need & volunteered wherever she could. Overall Alex never failed to put a smile on your face, she was very outgoing & friendly. She truly would’ve changed the world, but her legacy will never be forgotten. ~Brian Anthony Fraser~ October 18th 2002-February 13th 2023 ~”He was one of the sweetest most genuine people out there”. Brian was a 20 year old college sophomore who was sadly killed at his college while he was working at the Michigan State University student union building. A gun man opened fire & sadly Brian was one of the 3 that were murdered. ~Brian was born to parents Sean & Mary in Michigan. He graduated high school at Grosse Pointe South High School. He was studying business at college before he passed away. He was described as a natural leader & very active within his community. He was president of the “Phi Delta Theta” Fraternity. He also played a lot of sports such as baseball, lacrosse, & swimming. He had been a life guard for several years. He loved the team comradely when playing sports. A year ago today, around midnight, my mom and I pulled into a McDonald’s to order me food after she came and rushed me out of campus after the shooting. They told us they were closing and my mom begged them to give me anything they could, explaining where I was coming from. The man working the counter understood and let me order. When I was handed this bag on that night, it was the first time i had cried since I received message that there was an active shooter. I often think about that little act of kindness he showed me after the atrocities of that night. I hope he knows how much that little message meant to me. I have never loved a community more than in that moment. I look around at the growth we have made, despite the grief and I’m so proud of every single Spartan who is here. I don’t know the families of the victims, Alexandria, Brian, and Arielle, but I hope they can feel the love that I as well as my peers are sending their way. A parent should never have to lose a child to a bullet, a student should never have to die in a classroom. I hope that when I have my own children, I will send them into a different school system where I don’t have to pray over their bodies every morning. Hoping to God they don’t get shot. On this day one year ago, three students were taken by another act of senseless violence, five more wounded. Arielle Anderson, Alexandria Verner and Brian Fraser were doing nothing but simply attending class when they were gunned down in a cruel death. Nineteen-year-old Arielle Anderson was studying to become a pediatric doctor. She was very close with her family and especially with her grandmother, who described her as "kind, loving, caring, compassionate, and driven." Twenty-year-old Brian Fraser worked as a lifeguard and was the president of his fraternity. His sister referred to him as a light in the lives of his family. Twenty-year-old Alexandria Verner was an avid athlete, often described as a leader by coaches and teammates. Yesterday, after an exhausting week at the conference in Columbus, Ohio and an early 5:40 AM flight, I made it to the Aon sponsored, MSU Mental Health and Wellness fair. Despite my fatigue, the energy at MSU was undeniable. The students' resilience, humility, and eagerness to participate in the exercises and events were truly commendable. Though I believed I had exhausted all my line dancing stamina in Columbus, the MSU students and vendors proved me wrong. From the wobble to Jerusalema, I was all in. However, my feet did draw the line at Tamia's "Can't Get Enough Of You". A standout moment for me was being able to recommend my former classmate from UMBC’s black owned business as a vendor. Jaree Cottman is running her own thriving business, Afya Counseling and Wellness and crushing it. Thinking of her and her expertise, she was an immediate choice for this event. I always knew Jaree was destined for great things, and I felt immense joy seeing her engaging the MSU students. Given the recent events at Morgan State and the cancellation of their homecoming, it's notable how this event's timing seemed almost providential. However, we’ve been planning it for almost a year, and its relevance was felt even more deeply now. My hope is that the students gained valuable insights from the vendors on stress management techniques and other educational resources. And with the beautiful weather and spirited line dancing, it was a testament to the strength and spirit of the MSU community. #MSUStrong #mentalhealthmatters💚
