The ultralight musette. I've made so many versions of this over the years that I've lost count. It was a case of striking the right balance of volume, lightweight-ness, packability, comfort, ease of use and, probably the trickiest point, breathability. I've found myself reaching out for it more than I thought I would on bikepacking trips (perpetually running out of room for food) and loved having it at hand, but often ended with an uncomfortable, sweaty back due to the choice of fabric. This one, however, ticks all the boxes : ripstop nylon for a good durability-to-weight ratio, and a monofil weave, resulting in an airier construction than usual ripstop fabrics. It's also undyed, which means less chemicals being involved in the process, and therefore more visible than a stealthy dark tone. It's also less spendy and noisy than Dyneema, which was a luxurious contender, but probably a bit overkill for this application - the humble ripstop nylon still has bright days ahead. It weighs about 50g, has reflective details and cord, glove friendly buckles, and a snap closure. Georges Paillard, World Speed Record on a Stayer & Demi-fond Champion The fantastic postcard pictures French Champion Georges Pillard on his ride from Chartres to Paris (90km) finished in 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 2 seconds. This amazing feat was accomplished behind his coach Guerin a specially equipped Cycle L. Michard, Wolber tires with a Super Champion derailleur. Georges Paillard, born in 1904, was a specialist in middle-distance races, twice world champion, six-time French champion, and hour record holder. Paillard began competing as an amateur at the age of 14 in 1918. He ranked third in the French amateur championships that year. He began his career on the road, with the white and black jersey of the Velo Club de Levallois, won Paris-Evreus, Paris-Rouen, the individual challenge, the Criterium des Aigions, and placed well in major classic events. In 1922, he was the French Junior Vitesse Champion. The following year, after success on the road at Paris-Dieppe and Rouen-Le Havre, the turned professional in November. Fellow French cyclist and coach Leon Didier advised him to specialize in the middle distance and began training him. Paillard became the champion of France in 1928 and remained so until 1932. After retiring in 1933 he came back to claim the title again in 1934. He was crowned Demi-fond World Champion twice, in 1929 and 1932. On March 29, 1937, he broke the world speed record on a stayer reaching 137.404 km / h at the Montlhery Autodrome. In early October 1937, he traveled Chartres-Paris in 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 2 seconds, or 75.880 km/h on average, behind the motorcycle of his coach Guerin. Winner of the 1966 Giro di Italia, 1967 Tour de Suisse, Lombardia in 1964, and twice at the Tour of Romandie (1966, 1971), Motta enjoyed a solid pro career from 1964-1974.
