It was the very first show I ever saw professionally. Finally witnessing “Defying Gravity” in person 2009 through uncontrollable sobs, I knew that the stage would always be my happy place. It made me want to challenge and better myself as a performer. #glindaandelphaba have been characters who shaped me vocally and the magic of their sisterhood/friendship helped me find other musical soulmates. Through the years, I have shared the love of Oz with many dear friends, and even getting the opportunity to sing with the Queen of Green herself, @idinamenzel in 2015. She was an incredible being and the discipline of her talent and skill was something to behold. When I finally got to sing the dream role myself last year for a virtual production by #musicallyminded, I pushed myself harder than ever. Elphaba’s journey meant a lot to my own. A toddler’s developmental stage drastically impacts the types of circle time activities that will be successful at circle time. That just means you need to meet them with circle time activities that honor their needs. Since they aren't yet verbal or just beginning to communicate verbally. They have what is called receptive language which means they can follow directions and often copy what you do, but they aren't able to say those words, that would be called expressive language and it's only a matter of time for that to emerge. They need opportunities to learn new vocabulary and acting out those words with their body only gives the language more meaning. They need to see pictures or objects that represent what you are singing about to help them connect meaning to new words. Using manipulatives that match your theme gives them a chance to engage their sense of touch. Lastly, toddlers need activities that only last a few minutes before changing gears. So circle times are not only short, they should be 100% optional. This is never a time to force a toddler to do something they are not ready for.
