One of the great things about teaching is when you see an improvement in students in things you are constantly working on. For me, one of the main things is musicality and artistry; getting the students to feel both the rhythm of the music and the feelings that it creates within you. I am always working with my students about this as I don't want to see students just mechanically reproducing movements, rather that they look like they are making it up as they go along because of what the music has told them to do. And my students really are starting to show me this. However it is really rewarding when not just you can see it, but the students realise themselves that they are improving and starting to "get it". So I was so pleased to receive this message from a student yesterday: "In my mature age ballet classes with you, my main improvement by my personal standards is musicality.....Technical proficiency I'd gained to a degree in my younger days, but not dancing to the song, singing the notes and hence steps accordingly. So, thank YOU for managing to impart that aspect to me....." [04.19.2024] A little behind on this post, but I’m still at awe at the fact that I finally had the opportunity to take both #IanEastwood & #MelvinTimTim workshops on the same day. I already knew going into both of their #dance classes that it was going to be physically demanding as they are both known to use their whole body to hit every note/beat! Their #musicality & #texture is so mind blowing!🤯The way they connect all their #movements so smoothly and know how to shift their weight while staying grounded when it comes to their #footwork is crazy! Not to mention their consistent connection to the music and feeling is very admirable!👏 Ian did say he was taking a different approach from his previous #choreographies but I really liked this #abstract piece. He really knows how to explain the wavelengths of the music & break down the bass from the snares. His class had a groovy and fun,yet challenging and educational approach. Melvin, on the other hand, does not come to play in his class!🤣He went straight into it! At first, I thought I was not going to make it in his class.😅Especially with the #drills in the beginning that had my brain really confused on how to execute them.😆He goes hard and adds so much flavor to his moves!🔥I really liked that he emphasized to feel the music!🙌And I did see people recording towards the end of his class, so I hope he doesn’t mind me posting this video. Of course, I’m always a student first and I’m there to learn. So I hardly ever record in class and if I do record, I mostly record the #choreographer towards the end of class and definitely give credit where it’s due if I post the video because it’s the choreographer’s work. All throughout human history music was passed on through generations, taught by elders, traditional music making, community music making, ritual music making, a part of everyone at their core. This system has kept musical culture alive for over 60,000 years and in every traditional culture in the world!!!! And then all of sudden in this weird modern Western world someone came up with the idea, that music should be outsourced to a professional. That instead of practicing cultural music making they should learn this extremely complicated foreign musical language (Western Music Theory) which completely eradicated ALL cultural significance as well as the passing on of knowledge, and has led to the loss of much history. This then led to a capitalist opportunity. To train up the music teachers in institutions to reeeeally solidify the western knowledge, making sure those teachers ONLY abide by the western rules. And since this then makes them a professional they can charge lots of $$ for their knowledge. This then led to the children of rich parents having access to music lessons and instruments. These are the ones who have the privilege of being called ‘musical’ And while many elders out there continue to support their children to express themselves musically, to play the music of their culture, to keep the traditions alive, the institution will not hear of it. Play by ear? Not good enough. Didn’t have lessons? Not good enough. Don’t know your theory? Not good enough. With each passing generation music becomes harder to access. Lower budgets in schools means less music. More poverty in the world means no music lessons. Music went from a cultural birthright and part of every single person’s life to becoming highly gatekept and only accessible by the most privileged of us. As someone who has benefited from the colonialism of music, as someone with extreme privilege who has accessed music all the way to 3 universities degrees and is considered a professional in the field, I can absolutely attest to this fact… ✨None of that stuff makes you more musical✨
