I attended a fundraiser for Yvonne Steiner, a staple in the NL music industry, only to find local musician Dave Penny, who is currently battling cancer, up on that stage in support of Yvonne. I love hearing the stories behind art. So here’s the story behind this painting of mine… I’ve lived in a big city. I’ve lived in a small town. And in the summer of 2016, I lived at a lighthouse. I had left my job and my beloved cat so I could be with my new love. He was working on a restoration project at the lightkeeper’s residence on Exploits Islands off Newfoundland’s northeast coast. It’s now The Escape, a remote inn with the most incredible views. I spent that summer making paintings for a solo exhibition at the Corner Brook Rotary Arts Centre and as I relaxed into my work, I decided it was time to try my first ever large-scale watercolour. It felt intimidating … but it was totally worth it. “Big Dipper Watches Over the Forest” and its companion piece “Big Dipper Watches Over the City” are about the comforting experience of feeling small under the same big starry sky in different places. Fast forward to now and “Out Here”, the beautiful new album from The Once ... with my painting on the cover 🤩 I’ve loved The Once’s music for such a long time and often listen to them while I’m painting. The new album has been keeping me company all weekend - it’s soulful, spacious and calming. And I’m over the moon that they invited me and my art to be a part of this beautiful thing they’ve made. Being in the world can be hard.
