12/31/2013 - Mike Lipnowski - 6:13PM - Winnipeg, Canada @itsmikeymitts Saving the best for last! My brother Mike is the very last portrait for this project. He is the best brother I’ve ever had (the only brother I’ve ever had). Mike is a Sound Engineer, and music is his life. He is a multitalented musician himself, and plays guitar, bass, as well as drums and piano. He is a busy guy, but he made time in his busy schedule for this portrait today. Mike wasn’t always sure what he would do for a living, and he always wanted to work in the music industry. He worked extremely hard in school and found his calling. 12/30/2013 - Shaun Rykiss - 12:35AM - Winnipeg, Canada @shaunrykiss Shaun is the brother of one of my best friends, Matt, which automatically makes him my good friend. He and Matt were both competitive hockey players growing up, and Shaun is also really into canoeing, camping, and full enjoying the outdoors during the summer months. He is leaving Winnipeg today to go back to Vancouver where he currently lives and works. Shaun is originally from Winnipeg, but went to Vancouver a few years ago, where he attended and graduated from the Vancouver Film School. Shaun is a director/editor/filmmaker, and you can check out his awesome work on his website here. Shaun is currently working as an editor back in Vancouver, on a new television show that will be airing on the Outdoor Network this summer. He told me about the show, and it sounds pretty exciting. Since film/movies are such a huge part of Shaun’s life, he wanted to shoot it in a theatre, and luckily was able to get access to a movie theatre close to where we live today. The only catch was that we could only have access after midnight the day he was leaving, so we got it done really early today. 12/28/2013 - Sophie Becker - 11:02AM - Winnipeg, Canada Sophie is a happy little four month old. Her grandmother had me shoot their family portraits today, and during the session I photographed each of the three grandchildren by themselves on some tiny chairs in the library. I was a little worried about Sophie breaking into a tantrum a few times during the 1 hour shoot, but she kept her cool the entire time, which was pretty impressive. Sophie really turned on the charm and showed the camera some love at the end, which made choosing just one cute frame a tough decision. 12/27/2013 - Leilanie Giordmaina - 6:58PM - Winnipeg, Canada Tonight I had two assignments for the Winnipeg Free Press, a group meditation assignment, and covering the Wesmen Classic basketball championships. I didn’t know where I’d be making my portrait when I left home, but both assignments looked promising for a location. The first assignment was to create a unique image from a night of meditation, community, clearing and creation, and in the organizers words: “The theme of the night is to re-inspire and re-ignite the magic in Winnipeg, so that we may all have our dreams come true in 2014”. I was testing the light and angles from above the pool of the black star at the Manitoba legislative building when Leilanie grabbed one of the organizers and started dancing in the centre of the circle, and then they both layed down on the floor. I headed back downstairs, and spoke with Leilanie. I basically explained that I wanted to recreate her laying on the floor in the star, and she was really excited about that. She has done a lot of modelling, and told me that she was a Sunshine girl too. I placed the flashes on the ground firing up into the ceiling to try to evenly distribute the light over a fairly large surface area. The event started just a few minutes after we made this image (at 7pm), and I did not have a lot of time to speak with her, as the event started with mediation. But she did tell me that she is an actress, is in to meditation, tarot card reading, and energy healing. 12/26/2013 - Rimma Pilat - 9:30PM - Winnipeg, Canada Rimma and I go way back, to our days working at McDonalds many, many years ago. We have travelled as far as England together on a group trip as well. Rimma is currently finishing off her accounting designation, and is a lover of cats. We were supposed to shoot Rimma’s portrait on Christmas Day, but I didn’t have time after my shift, so we had to reschedule it for today. After a long day starting at 5:30AM covering boxing day madness (although it was pretty tame this year) for the newspaper, Rimma came over and I had an elaborate lighting setup ready to go. Even though we spent about 25 mins shooting with that setup, I didn’t think the images were looking genuine, most likely because I had her contort to the lighting for something dramatic. At the end of the shoot, she told me she chose what she wore because she thought it would be a standing up portrait. So after we had some chocolate cake, we tried just a few standing against a wall portraits, and I really feel that this funny one matches Rimma’s personality. 12/25/2013 - Rashelle Eden Kamminga - 11:31AM - Winnipeg, Canada Rashelle is the youngest portrait a day subject for the year. At the time of the portrait, she was just 8 hours old. Almost every year I work the Christmas shift at The Winnipeg Free Press (I’m the only Jewish photographer), and the past few years I have self assigned myself to photograph the first baby born on Christmas day.The hospitals usually dress them up in full head to toe Christmas outfits, which often makes for a cute photo. This year I went to St. Boniface hospital, but baby Rashelle only had a festive hat, which didn’t quite make for as telling an image that it was Christmas. After making the standard parents holding the baby image, I saw this other angle of Rashelle being held by her mother Lorien. Interestingly enough, parents Lorien and Chad told me how Rashelle wasn’t even born in the delivery room, as at the last minute Lorien went into labour in triage, as there wasn’t time to get to the delivery room. Labour lasted only 7 minutes, and Rashelle was born into this world. 12/24/2013 - Dr. Stan Lipnowski - 11:41AM - Winnipeg, Canada @slipnow It’s my dad. Thats it. Just my hero. I asked my dad a long time ago why he decided to go into paediatrics. His answer was: (and I’m paraphrasing, I’m sure his answer was more eloquent) because a lot of the time adults get sick because of their choices, but kids are innocent and when they are sick it is often circumstance, and not a direct result of their poor choices. He has this Forest E. Witcraft quote hanging in his office too: “A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.” My dad was the one who got me interested in both cycling and photography. I thought for the longest time that I would go into medicine as well, until I hated biology in university. He worked for Kodak when he was younger, and I have fond memories of tagging along with him at Kildonan Park as a kid, learning the basics of photographic composition. Again, I had a lot of time to think about this portrait of my dad. I had a lot of elaborate ideas, but time got away from me, and the weather would not allow for those crazy ideas at this time of the year. Scheduling has been very tough at the end of the year, and the best time we both had was on Christmas Eve. My dad thought that today would be busy, but I got a last minute text message from him this morning, telling me that he would have time before a noon meeting, so I headed down to his office. 12/21/2013 - Santa Travis Taylor - 12:24AM - Winnipeg, Canada I have been shooting the SantaCon Winnipeg event since its inception about 5 or 6 years ago. It is an annual event in which party goers dress up as Santa Claus and go on a pub crawl. The event often gets a bad wrap for some mischief that a few bad apples perpetrate at international events, the Winnipeg party is usually pretty tame. All of the participants are always named Santa, so that is how you address them. I met up with my friend Santa Dwayne midway through the event at The Zoo (the bar, not where the animals live) after shooting the Jets game, and yesterdays portrait. This years event raised money for The Childrens Wish Foundation, and by the time I got there, the party had been already underway for many hours. I liked Santa Travis and his real beard, and he agreed for a portrait. I didn’t have a lot of time with him, as the bus was about to leave for its next stop on the pub crawl route. He confessed that he is a huge nerd, and I did learn that when he is not dressing up as Santa, he works in IT/ quality assurance, enjoys playing warcraft, and drinking. It was very dark and loud in the bar, which made focusing the lens a little more difficult than I would have liked, but after reviewing the images, I noticed the red lipstick on his cheek, which just added that little extra special touch to the portrait. 12/19/2013 - Margaux Miller - 7:39PM - Winnipeg, Canada @margauxamiller Margaux is a good friend of my brother. I don’t think we have ever formally met, but we have followed each other on social media for at least a few years now. Margaux works as the Marketing Co-ordinator at Pinnacle Staffing Agency, and she is a competitive soccer player in the Premiere League. She recently bought her first home in St. Vital, and I came over for this shoot. She has this large hope chest in the middle of her living room which acts as storage as well as a coffee table. She had the idea to lay down in it. During the late 1800’s Mennonites travelled great distances by boat from Europe to North America to emigrate. Because of the great distance, many could only bring a few items with them, and that rarely included furniture. Many of these Mennonite people could only bring a dowry chest, which acted as a travel trunk. Margaux’s dowry or hope chest was passed down through generations and was a gift from her father to her when she was born. The piece belonged to her great great grandmother Anna, from whom she got her middle name Anne, and fun fact: Anna also had red hair. 12/18/2013 - Chris Thephasone - 6:20PM - Winnipeg, Canada @chrisfpv_ While leaving Wal-Mart this evening, I saw Chris and his big fur hat first, and then his Buddhist grandfather wearing traditional orange Buddhist robe second. I spoke to his grandfather, but he did not understand English very well, so Chris and his sister translated for me. He didn’t want to be photographed in his traditional clothing in or around Wal-Mart, but did tell me I could stop by a Buddhist event later that week to make a portrait there (it ended up getting postponed). After his grandfather passed on the portrait, I asked Chris, and he agreed. We walked a few hundred meters to a big snow mountain in the parking lot, so the hat would feel more in place with the snow in the background. It was a painfully cold night, and Chris wasn’t wearing gloves, and his jacket wasn’t even fully zipped, but he was very giving of his time. He is into photography as well, and we chatted about that for a while as I was setting up. He also really enjoys macro photography, which was my first passion while I was still learning the basics. What I really took away from my encounter with Chris was that he is a soldier with the Canadian Military, and he recently came back from his first tour of Afghanistan where he worked as a Signal Operator. When we are rushing through our daily lives, trying to complete basic tasks such as grocery shopping at Wal-Mart, the people around us doing the same boring things also lead extraordinary lives. I knew that a signal operator involved use of the radio, but he told me that his job was to teach Afghan soldiers to use radios. 12/17/2013 - Kepha Verrier - 1:39PM - Winnipeg, Canada Common Sense is a restaurant/cafe/store in an unlikely setting tucked behind a lot of heavy industry in St. Boniface. It is housed in a 100 year old paint factory, that has been turned into a majestic eatery with a very hippy vibe to it. I was meeting a client who suggested I make my portrait here (thanks Shirley!). I was really hoping to photograph one of the many interesting employees (they all have a lot of character) in the restaurant at a booth, as there is a lot of sculpted wood, but as it was so busy, I had to make the portrait behind the counter. You can check out the website for the restaurant and store here. I didn’t realize that the place is owned and operated by a local branch of a religious group called the Twelve Tribes Community, and the people working there live on a commune. There are two homes in and around Winnipeg, including a 70 acre farm property on the edge of the city where a lot of the produce is grown. When I asked Kepha what he did before managing the restaurant, he told me that he was a carpenter, and he like many of the community members put together the incredibly detailed woodwork in the interior. I also asked Kepha what he does when he is not at the shop in St. Boniface, and he told me that life on the commune doesn’t stop at the end of the workday. It’s not like he goes home, and turns on the TV and relaxes. Everything is done for the commune, and to keep the restaurant going strong. 12/16/2013 - Rachel Cooper- 7:17PM - Winnipeg, Canada @msrachelcooper Rachel and I met for the first time many years ago when we traveled to London, England together as part of a group trip for young adults. We were also both part of a group art exhibition a few weeks ago, which I discussed on my other blog here. I was displaying some of my photography, and Rachel had choreographed a dance piece which was performed live during the exhibition. Rachel is a busy person, as she is an independent dancer and choreographer, as well as being in charge of the dance program at Maple Collegiate, and teaching dance at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and The School of Contemporary Dancers Professional Program. It had been way too long since the last time I shot her headshots, so she had me shoot some updated images, and then we tried a few different things for this project. I’m not entirely sure what I was going for with this image, but I like the dramatic mood it creates. 12/15/2013 - India Coy- 1:21AM - Winnipeg, Canada Saturday was a really long day. It started with working a 9-5 shift for the Winnipeg Free Press, followed by a corporate holiday party complete with photo booth at the Convention Centre from 5pm-midnight. After I had packed up, I went to the Free Press Christmas party for an hour, and then headed back to the Convention Centre to pick up my photo background. As I was heading out for the night, I saw India and a friend, as spoke to them about the project. India agreed, and we started making this portrait, as drunk party goers walked by confused. India is a waitress who was at her husbands Christmas party tonight. She told me that her two kids are her life. She went on to tell me about her son who has autism, and we spoke about that a bit. At one point while I was in school, I worked at St. Amant in the Applied Behavioural Analysis program (ABA) which focuses on treating autism. India had tried to get her son into the program, but wasn’t able to back then when he was young. In the middle of making the portrait India’s husband came by, and tried to ‘save her’ from the situation, as he wasn’t exactly sure what was going on. I explained the project to him, and once he saw the portraits on the back of my camera, he was really into it. 12/14/2013 - Don Laluk - 2:03PM - Winnipeg, Canada I met Don while he was walking down the street. His bright red hat immediately caught my eye, and he agreed for a portrait. Don is an entrepreneur, and owns Mariaggi’s, which is quite a unique hotel. Don owns the building which also houses The Royal Canadian Legion. We shot this portrait in the Legion, and he told me about the history behind the hotel. It was the only hotel built for residential tenancy back in 1900, which meant that it was the only hotel in western Canada that had toilets and bathtubs in the room at the time. The owners of the hotel moved back to France (they were Italians living in France), and the building went back to being apartments. In 1984, when Don bought the building, it was still apartments, and it took a while to reconvert it back to its original glory as a luxury theme room hotel. Don prides himself on the fact that his business has a niche market for local clientele. Most hotels around the world have out of town guests stay, but at Mariaggi’s, 70% of the clientele are local couples having an in-town getaway. Trip Advisor’s rated it as one of the ‘Top 10 Most Romantic Hotel in the World’ in 2012. 12/11/2013 - Ron Cantiveros- 1:14PM - Winnipeg, Canada @roncantiveros It seems that everyone in Winnipeg knows Ron. He is the publisher of the Filipino Journal, an entrepreneur, and a community ambassador. He recently organized (SHOW) For The Philippines, which was a charity concert that raised $100,000 for Typhoon Haiyan relief. Last Saturday while I was volunteering with Help-Portrait, Ron and his girlfriend dropped in dressed to the nines for a portrait, as they were in the middle of a wedding and had a few minutes to spare. Ron has volunteered to be a portrait subject a few times in the past, but we made it work today. Ron is a funny guy, and he always talks about Filipino food (mainly lumpia), so I came up with a bit of a whacky idea, of Ron dressed in the tuxedo that I saw him wearing on Saturday, cooking lumpia in his kitchen. Well, Ron wanted to go all out for this shoot, and arranged with his friend, New Home Sales Specialist, Phil Mosher, to shoot in a $900,000 Gino’s Homes show home in Bridgewater Lakes. The original idea of Ron cooking/baking didn’t really turn out as well as I had envisioned, but as a secondary shot, I asked Ron if he wouldn’t mind lying on the counter. I really liked this shot, and though I almost always tell people to not give me big “say cheese and smile” expressions, I think it really works with Ron. 12/10/2013 - Stephanie Goldberg- 6:25PM - Winnipeg, Canada I showed up to a firehall this evening to make a portrait of a rookie firefighter, but as I started setting up, the chief came over and told me that I needed another level of approval from the communications department, so I packed up the gear again, and went back outside into the cold. I was not entirely sure what I was going to do for a portrait today, as it was starting to get late, so I went next door to a Salon, where I met Stephanie who was working there. Salons have saved me many times this, and the past winter months while shooting for this project. The people who work there, like Stephanie, are generally very stylish and well presented, and are also not afraid of being photographed. Stephanie is currently a undergrad student, and wants to go into law after. Winnipeg being what it is, a big small city, I found out after the shoot that Stephanie is my best friend’s brother’s, best friend’s, sister. 12/09/2013 - Gabrielle Funk- 5:18PM - Winnipeg, Canada @doeheart_ After photographing a couple of Gabrielle’s artist friends, she contacted me to be a part of the project. Gabrielle is an artist, and you can see her work here. She suggested a shoot that would capture “something about the chaotic (childish at times) beautiful creative mess that has been my life for the last year or so”. She later explained that she has been concentrating on her art full time for the past year, and she has been saying ‘yes’ to all sorts of creative opportunities that have been coming her way, and she agreed that this portrait project was one such example. Gabrielle works in many mediums, and when I asked her do describe her work, she responded that the essential theme of her work is “duality”. Gabrielle told me how she gets so immersed in painting, that she doesn’t realize how much paint and dirt she is covered in, until much later in the day when someone points it out. 12/08/2013 - Ariel Posen- 12:31PM - Winnipeg, Canada @arielposen I have had many people contact me lately wanting to be in this project, and they have proposed a shot with them playing their guitar. I’ve shot a couple of those types of portraits already in this project, and I definitely don’t want anymore, so I’ve been saying ‘no’ to those concepts. I figured if I have one more guitar in a photo, it definitely has to be of Ariel. Ariel has been a great friend since we were very young. We grew up together, and amongst our close friends in our year, I believe that we are the only two people that work full time as artists. Ariel is regarded as one of the top Winnipeg guitarists, and is well known in the local, and national music scenes. Ariel is sessional/touring musician, and has been touring a lot over North America this year with many bands as well. I haven’t seen him recently, and we managed to schedule this shoot just a few hours before he left for his next tour. I went to his condo, not knowing exactly what I wanted to do, but when I saw the steam streaming outside of his window, I knew what the background would be. Ariel has been into the process of making coffee lately, and he wanted to incorporate that into a simple portrait, rather a portrait with his guitar (which is obviously a big part of his life). I, on the other hand, have been thinking about how to make a portrait of him for a while now (we started talking about his portrait for this project early in the year, before the leaves turned green), and knew I wanted his guitar in the frame, but I wanted it to be subtle. 12/07/2013 - Cheron Long-Landes- 12:36PM - Winnipeg, Canada Today was the annual Help-Portrait event. This was the 5th annual event, and we tried something new this year. There were 3 stations set up around the city. One at Siloam Mission where photographers were photographing the clients of the shelter, who are without a home at this time of the year. Another group of photographers were set up in a school, and low income families were invited to drop in for free family portraits. The station that I was volunteering at was set up at Aspire Studios, and the public could drop in and have portraits made by professional photographers for the very, very, very low price of only $20 each. Many chose to have family portraits made, couple shots, and we shot quite a few business head shots as well. I was one of three photographers set up, and along with a lot of fantastic support staff we were able to raise over $2000 that was donated to Siloam Mission. Cheron was one of the supporters of the event who came in for new updated headshots for her business, and soon to be launched website. Cheron is a Health and Wellness Professional, specializing in Reiko and intuitive healing. She recently moved to Winnipeg from Durban, South Africa where she worked in the fashion industry as a designer. After we had finished with the head shots, I explained my project, and she was happy to be a part of it. I shot a few different setups a lot looser than the headshots, and thats what you see here. Ethan, who will be celebrating his first ever Christmas in a few weeks, has quite the mop of hair, and is quite the happy kid. He was constantly smiling until the camera was pointed at him, but we managed to get some great smiles out of him in the photographs. 12/05/2013 - Sheena Crookes- 11:12PM - Winnipeg, Canada @skatebettyskate Tonight was the last PechaKucha Winnipeg event for the year, and I was invited to present at the Park Theatre. It follows the 20X20 format where each presenter has 20 slides, each of which are displayed on screen for 20 seconds. I spoke about this portrait a day project: 2013. It was a great evening with a very diverse group of presenters. Adrian J.K. Shum of the GDC Manitoba photographed the event too, and you can check it those images here. Following the event, I asked fellow presenter, Sheena to be a part of the project. Her presentation was about her small business called SkateBetty. She has been involved with the Winnipeg skateboarding community for a while now, and she combines her love for the skateboard with woodworking. Sheena along with her staff send bits & pieces of Winnipeg's broken skateboards all over the world in the form of repurposed jewellery. You can check her work and order products on her website, Skatebetty. In addition to running her business, most of her time is spent with her 1 year old daughter, who I'm sure will be a skateboarder someday soon. Sheena told me that before she started this business she worked at the skateboarding store West49, and has "always pursued jobs that I could be myself, and not have to cover my tattoos or change my hairstyle". 12/04/2013 - Carla Fehr - 6:16PM - Winnipeg, Canada Tonight was one of those nights that I felt like giving up on this project (even though there are only 27 more days/portraits to be made). It was brutally cold, and 25cm of snow would fall by the morning. The snow was coming down hard, and I decided to walk around to try to make a portrait in the snow storm. I ended up asking about a dozen people over the course of 1.5 hours, and one group of people were actually rude to me which put a damper on my enthusiasm. Eventually I met Carla, who was heading into a grocery store to pick up dinner, and kill some time as her son was in drums lessons. Carla is engaged, and told me how her fiancé is not from Winnipeg, so they do a lot of traveling to see each other. Carla works for a northern airline, and is a big animal lover. 12/02/2013 - Travis Cook - 4:36PM - Winnipeg, Canada @travis_cook This past Saturday I was part of a group show where I exhibited some of my photography at Frame Arts Warehouse. While I was putting my jacket away in the back, I saw a huge pile of chairs stacked probably 8-10 feet tall, almost to the ceiling, and I took a cell phone image of it, and thought it would make for a great area for a portrait. I called the gallery first thing on today, and asked if these chairs were part of an art installation, or just chairs. It turns out that they were just chairs being temporarily stored in the back, and that they were going to be picked up this evening. I went over to the gallery, and tried asking one of the resident artists if she wanted to be in the portrait, but she said she had to think about it. On my way out I met Travis who actually co-owns the gallery. Travis is the original founder of Frame and the Media HuB, and is an artist as well, mostly in film and video. He told me that he hasn't had time to practice his art lately, as all of his time is put into operating the gallery space. Travis was up for climbing up onto the chairs, and told me that this wouldn't be the first time he was up there. His bright yellow hair caught my attention, and I asked him if he had a moment, and we sat down for a few minutes. Darren is from Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba, and has been a professional wrestler for 12 years (minus a year off after a bad quad tear he sustained while in Mexico). He goes by the name stage name, Zack Mercury (@made4tvmerc on twitter), and spends a lot of time travelling North America wrestling in many different leagues. 11/30/2013 - Troy Westwood - 2:22PM - Winnipeg, Canada I met Troy Westwood while picking up my accreditation for the Roar of the Rings Curling event that starts tomorrow. Troy works for TSN1290 as the Co-host of The Big Show weekday mornings, and was broadcasting from the MTS Centre as a preview for the curling event. He is probably best known from his days as the place kicker and punter for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He played in the CFL for 18 years, and I had photographed him during his final years on the team, but had never met him. As well as being a professional football players, Troy was also a successful musician, performing with the band Eagle & Hawk and also as a solo artist, named Little Hawk. He had a short break from broadcasting, and gave me some of his time to make a portrait of him. Looking for a decent background was tough with a lot of advertising all of the arena, but I settled on having him sitting in the arena (he is sitting in seat #7, which was also the # he wore while playing football). Troy told me that he is involved with several charities, but isn't involved with football anymore these days. He has a 5 year old son who plays both soccer and hockey, and Troy does as well. 11/29/2013 - Ryan Porath - 12:24PM - Winnipeg, Canada As the month of November comes to an end, so does the month of Movember, so I put out a call on the various social media networks looking for an awesome moustachioed man for a portrait. Ryan answered the call and met me at PrairieView School of Photography, where I am teaching a day and a half a week. I set up in one of the school's studios, as a few of my students watched. I used the portrait as a teaching moment, and Ryan didn't mind at all. Ryan and I met once a few years ago on my birthday, and have had each other on Facebook since. We've been trying to set up a portrait for a while, it is finally came together today. Ryan has been practising Karate for the past 27 years, and is a Godan. He is a father, an electrician, as well as a cannabis advocate. After several karate injuries, he has been legally growing and consuming the plant to ease the pain of his injuries, including an ACL tear. She has this incredible kitchen in her home, and I knew it would make for a great background of a portrait for her. Irene and I must have been thinking the same thing, as without asking, she was wearing all black when I showed up to her home. Irene has owned the shop for the past 9 years, and it has changed her life. Irene is a wife, and mother of two girls, and told me about her reasons for going into business for herself. She told me how she was tired of making money for other people, as she always puts a lot of energy into anything she is doing. Now with her own business, she benefits directly from that energy and passion, and she and her family are financially stable, and the Baklava is super tasty! 11/25/2013 - Kevin McKay - 5:00PM - Winnipeg, Canada Wandering around The Forks on another cold grey day, I saw Kevin working with the glass blowing flame at his shop, Bay Shore Gifts in Glass. Kevin has been a Lampworker/Glass Blower for 34 years. He shared an interesting story with me about he got into the trade, back in 1979. Kevin taught an established glass blower/friend driving lessons in exchange for lessons in glass blowing. Though Kevin was born in Ottawa, he spent most of his life growing up in Northern England, and has a thick accent. Kevin's twin brother moved to Winnipeg in 1982, and Kevin kept visiting the city until he moved here 13 years ago. 11/24/2013 - Astrid Ching - 11:44AM - Winnipeg, Canada @chingastridching I was thrilled to be second shooting the wedding of Astrid & Jeff with the fantastic Ebonie Klassen Photography today. It was a long day, but it went by pretty quickly. We had many locations to get to during the day, and really only had nice light during the shoot at the Downtown Red River College Campus. Most of the photography today was shot with strobe or flash, and this was the only location where I shot available light only. It was great getting to know Astrid and her, now, husband Jeff. The two met at the EBC Social (Everything But Commerce) 5 years ago, and throughout the day and night, I heard some funny stories about that night in question. The two have made a wonderful life together. They frequently travel, and go on camping and fishing trips. They got engaged in March in the Dominican Republic, and they are both animal lovers. FAQ #3: How long does editing take? • Over time I’ve learnt what works best for my business. In 2024 brand and couple sessions will be delivered within 3-4 weeks. Wedding galleries will be delivered no later than 8-10 weeks. My goal is always to return images as fast as possible! 11/23/2013 - Courtney Ketchen - 1:07PM - Winnipeg, Canada @court.gwen Courtney is the Co-Host / News Anchor for Breakfast Television Winnipeg, and our new neighbour. We recently moved into a new place when we got our puppy, Zoe, and we quickly became friends with Courtney and her two dogs, Kingston and Phoenix. Zoe and her dogs are best friends, and the best part about them playing together is that it wears Zoe out, and she is calm for the rest of the day. Courtney is a Winnipeg girl, but moved away for Journalism School, and then took other jobs around the country that kept her away from home. She moved back three years ago for the Breakfast Television job, and enjoys being back in Winnipeg where her family lives. I caught her off guard today when my planned portrait got postponed, but she was happy to be a part of it, and I managed to photograph her just before she was getting ready to go look after her little sister and brother. Liudmyla recently moved to Winnipeg from Odessa, Ukraine. She studies English at Red River College. Back home in the Ukraine, Liudmyla was a Construction Manager, but she doesn't want to do that same kind of work in Winnipeg. I’m going to take the next week to answer some of the FAQ I get as a photographer. Starting it off with numero uno: Where are you located? • I get asked this question a lot for good reason. A little over a year ago I moved to Manitoba to buy a house! The majority of work I take on is now in Winnipeg. Before that I was living and working in Vancouver, BC full-time. I’m still more than willing to take on work in BC. I will take any excuse to visit the mountains and my sweet Vancouver friends 💕.

Another one of my faves! After publishing this, I was told it had a striking resemblance to the 1889 painting titled “Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear” by Vincent van Gogh. - - - 11/21/2013 - Colleen - 4:24PM - Winnipeg, Canada It was another brutally cold day, but I vowed to find someone outside. It took well over an hour, and asking several people outside in the -20C temperature before Colleen agreed. When I first met Colleen, I told her I really liked the green, and that she must as well. She told me that green is the colour of growth, and that all of the people in her life are like flowers in a garden. She really enjoyed the portrait process, and was so great to get to know (albeit quickly). Colleen is 80 years old, and is a retired Paediatric Nurse. She spent many years living up north, working in small northern communities. She told me that she helped to first open Whitehorse General Hospital back in 1957. She also regaled me with stories of working with the dog teams in Gods Lake, Manitoba. She explained that she would go out with the the dog sled to pick up patients; basically a dog sled ambulance service. This image was made in a parking lot, slightly sheltered from the wind. We just missed the setting sun by about 5 minutes, so I had to use a wall as a background. The entire shoot took 2 minutes and 5 seconds long, but by feathering the light of the umbrella, I was able to create this painterly look to the portrait, which I really love. 11/20/2013 - Mona Faith Mousa - 11:42AM - Winnipeg, Canada @monafaithmousa One of Mona's friends had reposted one of my portraits on Facebook, and she contacted me to be a part of it. Mona is a performance poet, and works in radio. She recently moved to Winnipeg from Ontario for the job, and this will be her first Winnipeg winter. I think she will be able to handle the winter just fine, as I was complete frozen by the end of this shoot, and she was completely fine, and she wasn't even wearing gloves or a proper winter jacket. We headed to Bruce Park in St. James, and shot in and around this partially frozen stream. There was some great light in the shaded areas, and many of the images I made were shot with available light only. I had a really hard time picking one image to post, but chose the portrait made with flash at the end of the day. After the photo shoot Mona told me that this shoot "felt so natural and real, and I think that my poetry career is headed in that direction, less of the lights and stage tricks and more raw real emotion". 11/19/2013 -Jiye Jun - 8:04PM - Winnipeg, Canada I met Jiye at the University of Winnipeg AnX, where she was hanging out with her boyfriend outside of the Starbucks. I saw Jiye leaning very interestingly on the table, and when I introduced myself, I explained that I wanted to photograph her how she was leaning. I think she thought that it was a little humorous, and was up for it. She has never been photographed professionally, and was thankful for the experience. She didn't speak a lot of English, but enough that we could understand each other fairly well. She is an exchange student from South Korean studying English at the U of W for the past 3 months, and when I asked her how she is liking the snow and the cold, she told me that she wants to go home already, and hates the winter so far. She is only in Winnipeg for a total of 4 months, and then heads back to South Korea where she will continue with her English studies. After she has graduated, she wants to become a booking agent working at the airport. 11/18/2013 - Jan, A.K.A. "Snowball" - 4:28PM - Winnipeg, Canada They say that a puppy is the best way to meet women, and that certainly proved true this evening outside of Superstore. Our puppy, Zoe, brought potential portrait subjects to me, and at the same time, Zoe got the socialization which is so important at this point in her young life. Jan saw Zoe from across the street, and made a B line to pet her. At the same time, I explained my reasons for being outside of the store, and she agreed to a quick portrait before she went in to do her grocery shopping. Jan didn't feel comfortable with me posting too much personal information about her on the Internet, but she did tell me she is retired, and was a homemaker, raising her four children. She also told me that her friends at the gym gave her the nickname "Snowball" because of her white hair, and the hairstyle. Ziggy responded to one of my frequent calls for a last minute portrait subject on Facebook today, and we met up at Assiniboine Park just as the sun was setting. Even though the first day of winter isn't until December 21, it sure felt like winter after an overnight dumping of snow, and we both felt it should be an outdoor shoot. Ziggy is an avid marathon runner, and a multidisciplinary artist. He and I share an interest in photographing seniors. He knew when he was young that he was an artist and changed his name from Zachary to Ziggy. I thought maybe it was a Bowie reference, but it was more to do with the comic strip. 11/16/2013 - Ripley Hoogstraten - 12:21AM - Winnipeg, Canada @rhoogstratenmorden After what turned out to be a 16 hour work day, the last assignment of the day was covering a fatal stabbing on Portage Ave in the Silver Heights neighbourhood for the Winnipeg Free Press. I used to live next door to this apartment building, and was a little shocked to be called to a murder here. The scene was one of the most gruesome murder scenes I've seen in the past 7 years of working for the paper (and I've seen many). There was blood absolutely everywhere, and looked like a shot out of the Dexter television series. By the time I was finished filing images, it was 11;55PM, and I figured I'm already out and have all my gear with me, I might as well try to find a portrait subject for Saturday. There was a small crowd of young people smoking outside of a billiards bar on Portage Ave, so I pulled a U-turn and stopped to see who was there. Ripley was amongst the crowd, and he dropped his lighter in this massive excavated pit outside of the bar, and he jumped down to retrieve it. When he got back out, I introduced myself and the project, and he was happy to be a part of it. I suggested we go back in the pit, and he lit up his cigarette. It was a little tough shooting this portrait only because the crowd just above us on the street was a little rambunctious, and kept trying to photobomb the portrait. Ripley is a carpenter, and was hanging out at the bar to celebrate one of his friends birthdays. Riley also plays in 3 local Winnipeg Death Metal bands: Flash Out, Beast, and Putrescence. 11/14/2013 - Mike Zebinski - 10:46AM - Winnipeg, Canada I met Mike while walking down Osbourne this morning. It was hard to miss him as he is already a tall guy to begin with before he puts on these 7 inch boots. Mike told me that he has been Goth since high school, but didn't outwardly express himself as such until 5 years ago. He is into the Goth/Industrial scene, and wears an upper denture with vampire fangs. He works the night shift at 7-11, which he says suits his night owl lifestyle well. He doesn't wear the denture while working to be professional, but he told me that he feels more comfortable when he does wear it. 11/13/2013 - Commander Chris Hadfield - 3:54PM - Winnipeg, Canada @colchrishadfield This man needs no introduction, he is probably the most recognizable Canadian at the moment. Commander Hadfield was the first Canadian to walk in space and command the International Space Station, and now that he is retired, he is on a world tour promoting his recently released book, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. He was in Winnipeg today to speak at the Winnipeg Free Press News Cafe, as well as at McNally Robinson to sign copies of his book. Knowing that the Astronaut was going to be at the Cafe, I contact my colleagues there, and they said there would be a chance that he might agree to a portrait before he spoke to a packed house at 4pm. My colleague at the paper, Mike Deal is also shooting a 365 portrait project with his iPhone, and the two of us waited outside to try to get him in each of our respective projects before he went inside to speak. After Mike had gotten his shot, I managed a 38 second shoot with the Commander. During that time I shot a few frames, and we briefly chatted about photography; the gear I was using, and his training in photography. It was a huge honour to photograph and shake the hand of a living legend. A big thanks to Geoff, Tyler, Melissa, and Mike at the Free Press for helping to make this happen. 11/12/2013 - Sebastian Love - 11:22AM - Winnipeg, Canada Back in May I met Sebastian and his owner Jenny at the Forks. I had just finished shooting my portrait a day, but definitely wanted them in the project. I gave Jenny my contact info and we were finally able to set up the portrait for today. Sebastian is a very well behaved dog, and at one point we got him wearing his mini converse shoes, and an argyle shirt. Jenny wrote me a description, which is slightly edited, and follows below. Sebastian Love is a Chinese Crested dog named after the Prime Minister's Private Secretary on BBC’s Little Britain (they both are always flipping their hair out of their eyes). Sebsy is a month shy of 3 years old and was a dog show reject (his ears don't stand up, and he is larger than average for his breed) before he moved in with his owners Jenny & Bruno. He is hated by their cat but doted upon by everyone else. He is normally not allowed on the counter…especially when he is wearing shoes. 11/11/2013 - Sgt Lynda Bartel - 12:21PM - Winnipeg, Canada Back on May 5th, I attended a Decoration Day ceremony, where I photographed a 92-year-old Veteran of the Korean War. The portrait of Sgt George Peterson, is still one of my favourite portraits of this project to date. I knew in advance that I would be photographing the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Convention Centre, and I had a pre-conceived idea to photograph a female veteran. After the ceremony I was speaking with a lady from the Veterans Affairs Office, and she told me it would be difficult to find a female veteran, but spotted Sgt Bartel, and introduced me to her. Sgt Bartel joined the Canadian Forces in 1977 where she started out as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator. Her work in the forces saw her trained and stationed at several bases around Canada. She was deployed to Golan Heights, Israel in 1990 to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force where she continued to work within the transportation field. Sgt Bartel retired in 2011, though she still volunteers with the Peacekeepers organization, and enjoys going to the gym. 11/10/2013 - Serena Nelko - 1:38PM - Winnipeg, Canada @snelko It is hard to believe that Serena is already in her 3rd year of Medical School. It seems like yesterday that we were saying goodbye to our families at the airport to depart for New Zealand together. Between her busy schedule and mine, we have not been able to hang out much lately. We have been talking about this portrait since early this year, but we were only able to find a time to make it happen today. There are two things that immediately come to mind when I think about Serena. 1) The fact that throughout our undergrad degrees, she was the social glue in our group of friends. She was always on top of organizing events, and nights out that kept the group of friends together throughout the years. 2) Her huge hair. She almost always wears her hair like this, and is known for it. She says it's always easy to find her in a crowd; just look for the hair. 11/09/2013 - J.P. Perrier - 2:21PM - Winnipeg, Canada It has been 4 years since the last time J.P. and I have seen each other. The last time I saw him was to shoot his first set of headshots, and a lot has changed in both of our lives since then. J.P. is an actor, and has done a lot of theatre in the past. He wants to get into acting for television, so he started taking an acting class at Prairie Theatre Exchange. He realized he needed an updated headshot, and contacted me. In addition to acting, J.P. works in the family door distribution business, and he recently had a son with his partner. 11/08/2013 - Andrew Parisian - 1:03PM - Winnipeg, Canada Originally from Sandy Lands, Manitoba, Andrew spent a lot of time traveling when he was younger, but tells me that he is too old for that now. He worked as a pipe layer, and as a mover. I met Andrew sitting on a bench in Portage Place mall, and we went outside the mall to make his portrait. I had no idea at the time that he was homeless, and he told me a little about life on the streets. He just got this new winter jacket from a church, and he told me how he never did drugs, gave up drinking, and only smokes now. He mostly keeps to himself, so he can keep out of trouble, and he never "bums" (as he called it; asking for money on the street). While I was making his portrait, I noticed that he was missing a few finger tips on his right hand, and I asked if he would tell me about that. He described an extremely cold night about five years ago when he was sleeping on the street, between Main Street and McDermot Ave. He woke up with his glove missing, and over the next few days, the fingers turned several different colours, and by the time he made it to a hospital, the doctors told him they had to amputate them. It was a pretty cold day today, and I asked him what type of gloves he wears now, and he pulled out a fairly light pair that looked incapable of keeping his hands warm even at this time of the year in late fall. I offered him my gloves, but he would not accept them. I then pulled out several packages of chemical hand warmers that I always keep in my camera bag, but he would not accept them either. 11/07/2013 - Nereo Eugenio - 1:56PM - Winnipeg, Canada @scenereo I have been encouraging people to contact me to set up portraits lately, and I am happy that Nereo was one of those who did. If you would like to be a part of the project, there are not a lot of spaces still available, but I am always open, and looking for extraordinary portrait subjects. Click the link at the top of the page, or here for more info, what I am really looking for are people who have at least a slight idea or concept for what would make for an extraordinary portrait of themselves (or a recommended friend or family member). Nereo is a multidisciplinary artist; performing spoken word, dance as a bboy, as well as a painter, independant film maker, and graffiti artist. Nereo is also a father and a husband, and he also works as a mentor in the inner city, and has a few very cool special projects on the go right now. One such project is called 'Art can take you anywhere', and in Nereo's own words: "I was at $20 this past Saturday..and I've painted my way into earning a jar that is currently standing at $1350. I have one final day [today, Thursday] to paint and sell pieces. after that I am booking a flight to a place of my choosing...Plan is Mexico". I absolutely love projects like this, and I have done a few of my own. In fact, when this year is over, and the portrait a day is over, my next personal photography project will have a similar feel to this, but will involve bartering.
