Epic encounter with a mating pair. Two hours after the chase and the playing hard to get, this tired male finally got the approval from this female. She snarled and howled at him to stay away but really she wanted him to chase her. She was very aggressive in telling him no and it was a great experience watching the behaviour of these two. A mother and her cub run for their lives from a male polar bear. Both jumping from ice to ice trying to escape. It was a action packed few minutes watching the three bears. It all happened so suddenly!!These two appeared to be much too fast for the bigger male. Perhaps he didn’t want to, or he knew not to use all his energy on them. They were already on the move, jumping like crazy and howling for each other if one got too far behind. It was really a special experience for me to see this for my first time. I know in nature it’s survival of the fittest but I couldn’t help cheering them on. We were very lucky to have three young arctic foxes come to see us while on the beach observing walruses. They were eating walrus poop. Stealing it every chance they could get. Polar bears are superb swimmers. They are marine mammals and are as comfortable being in the water as they are on land or ice. Here a cub is diving for his piece of seaweed, playing and rolling in the water. What a joy to watch them in their natural behaviours while unaffected or unafraid of our presence. We take pride in making sure the wildlife is never disturbed when we observe them. Nature is curious. A curious cub was playing with seaweed in the water, tossing it around for some time. They do eat seaweed as well. He hardly looked up at us at all during his shenanigans. I was holding the 600mm up, waiting for him to look up, I could feel my arms burning. I rarely hand hold a 600 for that reason alone. This was such a good situation so I endured. Polar bears jumping in and out of the sea is about as natural as you and I walking on the street. They are very agile in the water and seem to have no problem getting in and out no matter the situation. A bearded seal resting on the ice in the sunshine. This bearded seal had some fairly fresh wounds, with cuts on both his head and body. We speculated that perhaps it had had a fight with another seal earlier. We took some photos and moved on allowing him to remain on the ice. It’s a successful wildlife viewing because we did not disturb the seal into the water. This mid- air cub and her mother are literally running for their lives!! What an encounter from the main ship in the pack ice at 80.49 degrees north. A male polar bear was after these two and they were jumping and running all over the place, with so much fear in their eyes. Passengers were cheering for both sides. On one hand the male needs to eat but on the other we just wanted them to escape!! The cub was howling. Thankfully both were far too agile for the male. He was definitely defeated by this chase. This mother bear and her cubs were on the beach, digging up old smelly whale bones to survive the remaining days of fall. Waiting for the ice to come, they seem to make do with whatever they can find to eat. She was not alone on the beach, as there was another mother bear and a single cub also looking for some scraps to eat. We observed some really interesting behaviour this day between the five bears. Both mothers were clearly teaching their cubs about other bears and how to behave around them. These two cubs copied their mother almost like a mirror at times. When she moved they moved, as if the were waiting for approval from her for their next move. At one point she froze like a statue for several minutes, head postured down, facing the other mother. Her cubs portrayed the exact same posture and did not move until their mother did. It was like a silent stand off, not aggressive but strong in holding her position near the bones, allowing the others a turn but also letting them know she will step in again soon and take what’s hers. She was demonstrating to “wait your turn” and the other mother had an opportunity to get some whale bones for her and her cub. When the food was not of interest, play time kicked in and none of the cubs listened at all. Totally out of hand doing their own thing. Who can resist a bear bum let alone three. This female polar bear was sleeping and barely visible at a significant distance. When she woke she wandered over to what was left of her seal kill. She had some really neat behaviour, including washing the meat in the sea by dunking it like a piece of clothing on a washboard over and over. Please choose and support small vessel tourism. A female polar bear seen smelling her way along the ice. This female named Sveltlana, was pretty good to us as she curiously walked along the shores edge, rolling and pouncing on the ice and smelling everything along her way. She often stuck her face in the snow to smell below it’s depth. She showed us many typical polar bear behaviours over some incredible time spent with her. This was a great encounter as she walked away un bothered, and never was once frightened by our presence.
