The cast tail will thrash around for several minutes to distract the predator and allow the Slow Worm to slip away. Pretty smart! . ~ Likeminded ~ Small things can bring joy to the day. Meeting likeminded people is a good example. Passing another nature photographer on one of my ‘camera walks’ never happens without exchanging interesting stuff. In the sharing of the moment sometimes even in a look is enough sad. Following the direction this nice gentleman was pointing his camera to, had me discover what he had before me. A beautiful male stonechat, moving in between sticks, poles and wire, but sticking around. I never expected that, I had thought of a more common bird out of the song I had heard. After watching this together over a nice chat on what we both had seen on that spot before, I moved on, leaving the gentleman to it, enjoying his changes for good, focused shots of the little bird. A drizzle made me turn around a bit later and so did the other photographer. We greeted smiling in passing halfway up that same path. I looked up another time from under my hoodie. Immediately I saw movements and discovered two birds almost alike. And a third one a bit further away. The twosome even came closer and I could clearly make out a he and a she. The drizzle stopped for a while so I could take out my camera. Thanks to this likeminded person I didn’t overlook these species, which is rather seldom seen in winter. They even seem to have decided to like moderate winters more and more, close to where I live. . ~ At home ~ Searching through my files to make some last small adjustments while building the pictural story of my very first photographical project, this image popped up. It’s a shot from about a year ago, of a foggy end of a cold misty morning. It took me a while to reach awareness it was worthwhile to try to crop, although I felt doubts on the water that seemed to ‘leak out of the picture’… So what I thought to be the issue, was where to cut. After producing several versions, my mind made this sudden click. …There was something about the image that made me look better… First by leaning back for some distance, then forwards to regain sight on certain subtle, almost hidden details I rediscovered. Strange how I’d totally forgotten this part of the shot. It was next to the stunning network of trees, the most important reason for taking the picture. The issue with the ‘leaking water’ was just my worrying self feeling uncertain. I stopped focussing on it and started to feel again the marvel of the original moment. Instead of the water my doubts slowly ‘leaked away’ and the decision to take the shot felt as good as it does in this second moment. I realise it’s often better to shut inner doubtfull voices and have faith in the natural beauty nature uses to wrap up her surprises. In discovering this realisation, I felt at that moment, and once again feel now not lost anymore but so much more ‘at home’. I would like to ask you to lean back and then forward to look closer. And as long as you like the music playing, take your time letting in what I see... Can you also spot the hidden, wrapped up surprise in this picture…? . ~ Wheezes and a whizz ~ Secretive and shy. These are the hesitant soft wheezes I hear in a silent part of the forest. I know they must be there, before I finally spot them through the lens. High up, looking down to see if they’re safe, a pair of goldfinches are fundling with the seeds. A while after, in a whizz they fly up to disappear, leaving me in silence again. Climbing down the sandy hill to head home I feel I have to watch the trees once more. I turn my head around and look right into the golden gaze of a treebark coloured sparrowhawk, flapping its wings twice and gloriously floating from between the trunks, to slide after a sudden turn into nowhere… not more then some meters from me. Its abillity to blend in so well and approach or vanish like a ghost so fast and without a sound, is what made the small goldfinches shy out and hide up for a lookout in the treetops. Cute! . ~ Struck ~ On one of my ‘braver walks’, nature’s beauty got me forgetting about my tiredness for a while. On the hunt for a picture of large grazers I stumbled upon a couple of handsome small ponds. Marks of hooves and dung were all around, the animals had been drinking there shortly before. Attacked by fatigue after all, I decided to climb a somewhat higher ridge of dune, meaning to sit down to rest for a while with some overview, hoping to spot the Highlanders, to be totally struck by the downward view of this hidden gem: a deep den, in which rays of sun had only just reached the magically formed see through shapes in the frozen watersurface. This place looked unearthly beautiful, cold and quiet, the icy surface like polished glass and stone, surrounded by walls of moss and small bushes of crowberry. It looked like a still but shining flower or a fallen star in the middle of the dune landscape. This photo of that moment is my other gem. An unmanageable situation. In the end they were taken into the loving care of @stichtingleeuw where both lioness and he are treated the way lions who grow up too dependent on people, should. They're healthy and much happier now, given the right training to build condition, muscle and survival instinct. Some days ago I heard of this story and I met Cesar, from up as close as I could be... See this fixed stare which is pinned on the prey simulator, swaying through the air in the training arena. . ~ Time ~ Timing can mean everything to life... So let's take some and read this! This olive green and white butterfly and I both are caught in the same heavy rain. No patience enough to stay in my hide out under the trees, i walk up ahead a narrow path through bushes and grass. The very moment the last dripping stops, a male orange tip boldly flies around, drawing my attention with its standing out colours. A first time meeting for me! 🤩 A second later this female appears, rejects the male and lands right in front of me. Quickly i get out my camera, kneel carefully... But the grass is so damp, within two seconds the clear view through my lens is gone... A double struggle takes place: the lady orange tip tries to dry hear wings, clinging on to a flower. Me, in a hurry to whipe off my lens every other second with just enough time to focus and shoot! My coat and hair dripping, I feel like a fool, but isn't this tiny lady aswell?! After I find out, this butterfly has great sense of timing! She needs to pick a flower for each of her some hundred eggs, that has just the right freshness to turn into seed with the right amount of softness, good enough for the caterpillar that will come out of her egg, to feed on it. And to put up and stay in a cocoon untill april next year... And all this only within just some weeks! I won't ever pluck those pretty Lady's Smocks, knowing why they're there. There have to be hundreds of hundreds of them.
