What a difference a week makes 🤩 The last six weeks have been the hardest since the initial diagnosis. I genuinely thought I was losing Andy. Talking with him today he also thought he was dying. That’s how bad things were with the wrong medication 😱 At times, Andy was practically unconscious. He was totally bed ridden. I couldn’t talk with him. I was doing everything on my own. I was on the verge of tears all the time. He was getting weaker and weaker. He was in more and more pain. He had hives all over his face. His mouth and throat were infected with thrush, making it almost impossible to eat or drink. Our team just weren’t listening. But here we are having stopped the medication. Yesterday Andy went out with a friend. Out of the house 🏠 Today he drove to the shop on his own, then took Fred for a little walk 🐶 And this evening I left him with Dani to walk Fred on my own. Although weakened from the last six weeks, he’s on the up. Cue more tears, but these are tears of relief. We are mostly saddened that this has happened to us, and must happen to other people ALL the time. The wrong medication. No review. No checks. No listening to the patient or family who keep saying something is wrong. Once again, it feels like this diagnosis is a fast track to being written off. Don’t accept that narrative. Pain and the pancreas: Although the old adage is “you should not be in pain” the reality is at some point or points, cancer is painful. Pancreatic cancer by its very location (in your pancreas) causes a specific pain as the tumour presses on your celiac plexus, a large bundle of nerves behind your pancreas. In order to control this pain, you can either numb it with opioids or try nerve pain medication. Or both. Andy has found opioids helpful until recently. His specialist nurse suggested rather than upping the amount, to add a nerve pain medication. We could see the thinking so agreed to trial it. However, it didn’t suit him. At all. Some of the main serious side effects are extreme tiredness, low blood pressure and skin rashes. Andy had all these to the extent that we feared he was declining rapidly. We made the decision to reduce the medication slowly (which was ONLY after we asked our GP, specialist nurse and medication team for an urgent appointment which we are still waiting for 🤷♀️) and as it was reduced, Andy’s health improved. We’ve now moved to MacMillan to help manage his medication who are available 7 days a week and will come to the house to support us. The moral of the story is sadly pain will be part of this journey. But sometimes the medication is worse than the disease. Although we’re not advocating changing your medication without guidance, sometimes you need to listen to your body or trust your instincts. There is another route which is a celiac plexus block. This is something we are now exploring. Does anyone have any personal experience of it? I once heard it said that our #purpose in life isn’t what we do, but rather the #impact we have on those for whom we do it for. Yesterday I had the privilege of sitting down on the #WealthMovementPodcast with @shayafrum the Director of Program Advancement at the Jessie Rees Foundation, @teamnegu and the big sister of Jessie Rees who has #inspired and #impacted so many children and families across the globe fighting cancer to Never Ever Give Up, NEGU! What they do for children and families fighting cancer is nothing short of incredible and what I have come to realize after being involved with them for nearly three years is the impact they have had on my life and the #legacy I hope to leave one day. Lanzamos la nueva añada de NEGU, la 2023. El primer vino que nace tras el invierno en BAIGORRI. Uvas maceradas en depósitos de acero inoxidable en abierto, con control de temperatura y largas fermentaciones intracelulares. Los remontados de los mostos se realizan de forma natural por gravedad, utilizando la inmersión del sombrero con su propio jugo. Para la extracción final del vino se utiliza una prensa neumática, pasando a continuación a tinas de madera, donde realiza la fermentación maloláctica. The first wine to be born after the winter at BAIGORRI. Grapes are macerated in open tainless steel tanks, with temperature control and long intracellular fermentation. The must is pumped over naturally by gravity, using the immersion of the cap with its own juice. A pneumatic press is used for the final extraction of the wine, which is then transferred to wooden vats, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. 👩👧👧 Yesterday, the girls and I had the pleasure of meeting 9 year old, Aspen, from Lake Elsinore. Her family was referred to us by another SKF family, Carrie & Scarlett. Miss Aspen was admitted to Rady Children's Hospital - San Diego last week after having leg pain leading to an emergency room visit where they discovered blood clots in her leg. Of course, you know the first question that I asked, and the answer was "No", she did NOT get ANY shots. 🏨 Doctors are baffled at what could have caused little Aspens blood clot issue and honestly I wasnt prepared for the photo mom showed me of the clot tissue that was suctioned out of her daughter's leg. It had to be about 12 inches long and broken up into a few parts. But it sounds like after further observation today, she has been given the green light to eat again and move forward. Hopefully this is a quick and easy week with no further issue and they get discharged within a few days to head back home. 🐇 Aspen got one of our Superhero themed gifts paired with a giant squishimellow all hand picked by Scarlet herself. We also were able to bring FRIZZ the bunny for Aspen to enjoy petting. 🦸♀️ Our superhero gifts are procured and curated in honor of Emma Sinford who lost her battle to cystic fibrosis is 2018 at age 15. For the last week now, Andy has been in bed. His energy levels have taken a sky dive. His appetite too. He’s been seen by our Oncology team and our GP. Their suggestion is that he’s probably fighting off an underlying infection, as both Dani and I have had viruses recently. And of course being immunocompromised means you don’t bounce back in the same way. In fact you don’t bounce at all. So bed it is. And it’s a funny thing, looking for appropriate images to post. Most people see having no plans and a chance to lie in bed as a positive, which I guess it is. But when that’s not your choice, when you physically cannot get out of bed, it’s not so much fun. How quickly things become our new normal though. Dani is just rolling with it. Dad is now in bed, which means she can sit on his bed and have bed picnics, watch shows on the iPad and generally hang out with him. She’s happy. He’s not fighting it as much as I imagined he would - which shows me just how exhausted he is. Earlier on in the week he was sleeping for many hours at a stretch. Now at least he’s awake more. He’s asking for food and drinks. He’s happy for Dani to sit with him. So we’re hopeful that this is a blip, rather than the next level of shit. 14 months post diagnosis. Still waiting on our miracle. This comes with a heavy heart… After 12 professional seasons of baseball I am finally going to hang them up. It has been a journey of rolling hills but I wouldn’t take any of it away because it made me the person I am today. To my family, my teammates, my friends, all the fans who supported me, and my wife, thank you for driving me to be great. I love the game of baseball but since getting married it has changed the way I think. I want to grow up, have a home base, and start a family with Lauren in So Cal. To my Jaguar/little league buddies… thank you for all the fun and amazing memories! We won a lot of tournaments and went to a lot of hooters! 🤣 To my Diablo teammates… WE WON CIF 🔥 great memories with the Zuns! To my OCC boys, y’all will always hold a special place in my heart! We partied hard and played even harder! To all of my coaches, thank you for guiding me the right path and always believing in me. Thank you Oakland, Seattle, Tampa Bay, San Diego, and the Reds for letting me be apart of some amazing organizations throughout my career. Mom, thank you for always supporting me and doing everything you can to make my life easier during my career. I couldn’t have done it without you & dad 🤍 I love you And finally, my dad passing left a huge hole in my passion for baseball. My first thought when baseball comes to mind is my dad. Any time I was in a slump, he knew exact what to say or do to get my confidence back. He taught me to play with heart and passion and that is what drove me to get to the big leagues. It makes me sad to walk away from the game but I cannot wait to coach kids and do lessons to pass on all the advice like my dad did with me. Before I go I want to share my favorite baseball memory. We were in little league All-Stars and I was on the mound. I had given up 3 hits and we were up 2 or 3. My arm was hurting and I didn’t want to be on the mound anymore. I am crying and my dad and Roger don’t have anymore mound visits. I’m yelling at my dad to take me out and he puts a stern look at his face and pounded his heart with his fist and said “have heart”. I got out of the inning with no runs scored. To the next chapter in life 🤙🏼 #NEGU

Chemo day again We're doing 100% Oxaliplatin(hanging now 2 hours), 85% 5FU( 48 hour pump..take home) Repeat CA-19 markers May 2nd CT Scans before May 16th chemo. Basically we are chasing my tumor markers until something shows up on a scan🙄 I have MRI of my right hip Monday due to pain that's so bad it wakes me up at night. While in the hospital, Carolina and I witnessed how hard it was for AJ to steady his hands when he first attempted to draw. He was a bit frustrated, and needless to say, saddened because he couldn’t do what he loves. Even though he’s not back at full strength, he is definitely getting there. The kid never gave up and he never allowed himself to give in to the self doubt. I’m very proud to see his grit and tenacity. I feel very blessed to witness his progress. It’s been a long week and it’s only Wednesday 🥺Labs, ultrasounds and oncology appointments along with a friend in the hospital so it’s been a long few days of hospitals, worry and lots of anxiety 😭 I am so proud of both girls they did amazing with it all. This was the first time Maddie sat in the chair , didn’t cry or fight me and the staff . She said mom it doesn’t even hurt. My strong girl . I cried happy tears . She has been through so much but she never gives up and continues to fight. She continues to be a walking miracle . God Is Good .Results showed that Avah unfortunately has a kidney stone in her left kidney. Hoping and praying it stays there . I know all to well about those 😭 I have had them numerous times . Avah’s labs are a little off as well so I will be making sure she’s getting some extra iron along with Maddie. Madison’s labs were all good ! We will be back there in August for their sedated long MRIs and oncology appointments. Madison will also have an extra scan of her Brain that will be with contrast just to make sure she’s good with her history . Overall they are doing well. They are getting excited for summer but not before their big school trips next month. Madison is going to Chicago with all the 6th graders and Avah will be heading to Greenfield Village . School year is almost at the end and I can’t believe it . Time sure flies by . Remember today is a gift . Liam has now been fighting and living with DMG for almost a year. A year since his family were told that he had an incurable tumour that would take his life. We stand with Liam and his family, sending them love and keeping them in our prayers as they continue to hold on to hope and fight on. April 24th our life was shaken and distrubted. After going for scan that everyone thought would show nothing we ended up rushing to Philadelphia that night. Friday April 26th our world shattered. We heard those terrible words "your son has an incurable brain cancer". We sat in a room full of strangers that told us our son had 6-9months to live. I've never cried so hard in my life. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. I just wanted to run out of the room. They couldn't have been talking about my sweet baby boy Liam. A boy that cares so deeply for others. A boy who has a smile that can change the world. A boy that has so much life left to live. My mind ran wild. The thoughts he would never go to kindergarten, never get married, never get to be a father. Everything that could possibly go through my mind did. I thought the tears would never end. I thought about the other children and how I was even going to tell them. I thought how am I going to survive this. & here we are almost a year later. We aren't in the clear. We just have a honeymoon period going on. My son still can't be cured. He still fights every single day. This almost year has been one I wouldn't ever wish on anyone. My fighter continues to fight. He has so much strength and he refuses to give up. He deserves the world.
