Let’s talk medications 🗣️💊 Those medications to you may mean nothing. But to a medical parent, they mean everything. Here is why. Us medical parents have worked tirelessly finding ways in which these medications will help keep our child’s nausea, pain and everything else controlled. We’ve had to battle at home with the juggle to find the right meds at the right time. We finally manage it. We finally get our heads around it and it’s paying off. Our child’s side affects and symptoms have been great, very minimal because we’ve found what works BEST for THEM. Imagine for us, we go into hospitals, we hand over that responsibility and the plan that works, only for staff to just start handing out these drugs as and when they want to. Half hour late, an hour late, the wrong ones at the wrong time and just expecting us medical parents to be ok with it and expecting our littles to also just get on with it. Nurses/Drs/Medical staff - us medical parents aren’t being hard work. We have just found what works best for our child. Please just listen and come to a common ground with it. Ultimately it’s to keep our child comfortable as much as possible whilst they’re battling the unimaginable. Imagine you was in that bed with cancer or any other medical issue, being given your meds at the wrong time. What happens? You pay for it. You feel sick, you experience pain. That’s the exact same for our children. So next time you think “wow that parents hard work”. It’s because our children matter to us. #childhoodcancerawareness #advocate

Meet Toni! A special thank you to @depuycaitie for helping me pick a pattern & sharing Toni’s story with me🥰 On February 1st, Toni was admitted to the PICU after visiting the pediatrician with some concerning symptoms. Not long after that, she was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She immediately began chemo and was inpatient for 30+ days of induction. Unfortunately leukemia was found in her bone marrow so she has had to undergo frequent lumbar punctures to get chemo directly into her spinal fluid. She was discharged home shortly after her port was placed and has weekly appointments at clinic to continue treatment. April 22, 2024. Update on my boy, going on week two here in the hospital. Last update i believe I mentioned that the Drs and team suggested a feeding tube that would be placed in Jase’s nose due to lack of eating and nourishment. Well obviously Jase was not happy about it and did not want it at all. He eventually got it placed Friday and he did it so well! I’m so proud him. Unfortunately Friday night Jase ended up getting sick and being nauseous made it come out.. so the team gave the chance over the weekend to try and eat… well Jase still has not ate. Going on week 3 of no eating.. and almost week 2 of being constipated. I’m praying that’s the reason why my boy won’t eat.. I’m praying once he finally uses the bathroom that Jase will get his appetite back. This morning Jase got his feeding tube placed in his nose again. This time they gave him Ativan to help calm his body through the process since this tube would go in further down into his muscle in the stomach so it won’t come up as easy when he gets nauseous. The procedure went well, it’s still hard for Jase to process, very emotional over it. But it is only temporary. And tough guy is still making it to radiation today. And then after radiation this evening we’ll try a new med to get him to use the bathroom and start his feeding tube and eventually he will start his chemotherapy treatment as well… his numbers finally came up. this sure has been a day on Jase. This whole stay/few weeks has been rough on my boy. Please keep praying and keeping him in your thoughts. Pray that this treatment goes smooth for him and not so much sickness. Pray for his strength. The first photo was taken in August of 2022. It was a little over one month post his diagnosis. He was pumped full of chemo, fluids, and steroids… which in turn made him crazy hungry. The second photo was April 15 2023. In 8 months he lost so much weight, and lost his hair. Getting intense chemotherapy. The last photo was taken tonight April 26 2024. 652 days into his journey. He looks healthy. He looks happy. He looks like your average 3 year old boy. When his legs aren’t bothering him he will tear around like any normal kiddo. You sometimes would never know about the cancer unless we told you. He’s come so stinking far. With 196 days left I feel like there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel and it feels like it’s right in our grasp. I can’t wait for him to walk away from this and never look back ✌🏼🫶💛🎗️

Consolidation 1 Relapse Protocol Day 15 Aaaaand chemo hold. Sadie’s WBC and Neutrophils have tanked, so she is on a chemo hold until they rebound a bit. Am I shocked? No. This cocktail of meds is very similar to the original long term maintenance protocol - and it took a while to sort out that dosing. But still not an ideal situation. Being neutropenic (ie very low neutrophils) means Sadie’s body can’t fight infection. And if she gets develops a fever, it’s an automatic checkin at SickKids. I asked the dr about school. She said there is no hard and fast rule. It’s risky sending her to hang out with germs kids. But if she is feeling well and for her mental health, it might be worth the risk. Luckily we have the weekend to figure out what we want to do. We head back to SickKids next week to do more bloodwork and possibly a round of high dose oral methotrexate…but that’s count dependent so we’ll see what happens. Today Sadie just had a finger poke, instead of having her port accessed. It’s never easy squeezing blood from that little finger. There aren’t too many times that we just do a finger poke, thank goodness. Sadie asked for a duck as compensation for the finger poke. Not a stuffed one, but a real one. Obvs a duck in the city isn’t going to happen…but she was pretty pi$$ed when I said no. 🤪🦆 #acutelymphoblasticleukemia #childhoodcancerawareness
PET Scan P̶O̶S̶T̶P̶O̶N̶E̶D̶ CANCELLED. We’re pretty sure that it would have been clear… sort of. The scan world is a messy one, so let me try to explain. 👇 · Earlier this year, Isaac had a CT scan and PET scan. The scans image different things. PET fortunately and unfortunately picks up everything. Every bump, scrape and cold will even show up, so there’s a lot of interpretation involved. · During his last set of scans, the CT was clear and the PET picked up something in his lymph nodes (likely a cold that most kids have at Isaac’s age), but it was recommended to do a CT scan to confirm…which he did two weeks prior to the PET scan. · To be abundantly cautious, another CT and PET were booked 2 months later. · We did the CT scan two weeks ago and we found out that it’s clear. Do we think the PET would have picked up any signs of cancer? Likely not. Would the PET have picked up anything today? Definitely. It would have picked up his lymph nodes… again because he has a cold. · And the cycle continues. · So the team has decided to keep our July dates for the next CT and PET, and we’ll just wait. · Do we think Isaac is free from cancer? Yes. Are we still concerned? I don’t think we could ever be carefree about this. But we will wait. · Until then, we appreciate those beautiful prayers that you’ve been sending our way. · May Isaac be free from cancer. May Isaac be free from cancer. March 22nd, 2024. Round 7 of chemotherapy our short stay 2 days. Didn’t get in to many pictures this go on around. But Jase so well with his treatment and no sickness! And started a hot chocolate! And recovered faster this time as well and even went to school this week. We also got his results back from the last scan he had. That would update us on the spots in his lungs and if the chemo is working and or spreading. And the spots in his lungs are resolving on their own!! He started with 5 and now has 2. His pet scan also came back clear! His cancer is not spreading and chemo seems to be working!! I’m SO incredibly proud of him. How strong he is being and how well he is handling this and also wanting to learn all about his treatments and scans and questioning the drs himself to know of information or curiosity of what it is going on. Even on his bad days he still continues to smile. I can’t be more of a proud mom of him. Please continue to share Jase’s story and please please continue to keep us in your prayers and thoughts! ***UPDATE*** As I said earlier this morning Jase has many scans ahead of us and scans are one of the biggest signs to tell us how things are looking. Jase had an MRI this morning of his left shoulder. His tumor is on his left shoulder on the back in the blade. We FINALLY have results in! ANNNDD chemo is WORKING!! I can cry happy tears!! Thank you so so so much for everyone keeping Jase and us and his health, scans everything in prayers and positive thoughts our way! His tumor is shrinking!! This is a comparison. I don’t have the best pictures it is kinda hard to tell but dates are in the picture. To the left is the one from dec 2023, and to the right is today. You’ll see a big circle and another circle inside it. The circle inside is the tumor. And it has shrunk!! The measurements for the tumor in dec 1, 2023 was 8.7 x 3.7 x 4.4cm today’s measurements are 8.4 x 2.5 x 2.6cm. We are so happy for the results!! We still have a long journey ahead of us and more treatments scans and soon radiation! Jase has more scans next week. So please please keep Jase and us in your prayers and sharing the word! We got admitted on March 8th, 2024 for Round 6 of chemotherapy our long stay 5-6 days. I blurred the image cause Jase isn’t comfortable with his hair loss yet. This morning 03/12/2024 8am. Jase gets an mri scan of his shoulder to see if his tumor has shrunk or grown.. I pray with everything that we receive good news that his chemo treatments are working and his tumor has shrunk and keeps shrinking.. This is Jase’s first mri since November 29, 2023 when we first got admitted for his eye apt. That evening when Jase was doing his mri. I suspected it was taking longer than normal and no one came out and told me what was going on or any updates. Few more mins pass by I saw his anesthesiologist walk out. I stopped her told her who I was. We walked back to the waiting room to sit down. As she said to me” has anyone or the drs told you any possibilities what this could be.” (There was a lump on Jase’s shoulder) I said no. In that moment I knew it was going to be bad. Then she proceeded to say as a mom of 3 boys she wanted to tell me and told me to prepare myself for news that I would not expect, she said she’s not a radiologist but has been doing this over 25 years.. that she knew what she saw. In that moment I knew she meant cancer. I immediately started bawling. I tried to go back there right away to Jase and they wouldn’t let me that he wasn’t ready yet and I just sat in the hallway bathroom all alone just crying. Thinking of all possibilities and scenarios running through my head. Thinking of how he’s going to react to such terrible news. My sweet little boy. He is so strong. I remember that day as it replays in my head constantly. I don’t think it’ll ever leave my head… the knots in my stomach.. that feeling.. as I sit here in the same room.. the same chair today.. hoping and praying for good news for his results.. I pray that god will continue to look over after my little family. I pray that god keeps his healing hands on my son. I pray for Jase to have the strength he needs for this journey. February 12th 2024, Jase got a great surprise today! From a young girl named Sammy and her family. She was diagnosed with the same cancer as Jase! And finished her treatment not too long ago, it’s so nice to see and communicate with kids and or families that can connect with Jase! To make him not to be the only one. He is not alone. It’s so hard for him to open up sometimes while going through this. He has so many people out there caring, praying and supporting him more than he knows! And we are so very thankful for it!! He got a huge basket full of his favorite things! Which put a big smile on his face and was happy to wake up too! And she also painted us some rocks, we thought was very sweet and kind. We are very greatly and appreciative. Jase is on his 4th round of chemo, today marks day 4 we’ve been here.. And he’s impatiently waiting to get out of here!🤣 it is our long stay. February 2nd, 2024. We had a follow up with his oncologist and nurse to check on his recovery after his treatment and see how his bloodwork levels were. All the levels came back good but Jase’s platelets. They were 10… today marks Jase’s first time of infusion for platelets. Of course he didn’t like cause it meant he had to stay at his appointment longer 🤣 but overall the infusion went fine and no side effects. #JaseStrong10 #childhoodcancerawareness #ewingsarcomaawareness

January 5th, 2024. Our 4th day here and also my birthday.. and it’s also the day i decided to tell the world what my son has been diagnosed with.. Never thought in a million years I’d be spending my birthday this way.. but would also never want to spend it any other way being by your side here in this hospital. This is obviously devastating news for him myself family and for all. Still learning to process and adapt to it. Though I don’t know how we will adapt.. just taking these next months of Jase’s treatment day by day. January 2nd, 2024. Follow up with his oncologist and nurse to check bloodwork levels, and if Jase’s levels are good we get to be admitted to the hospital for what we call his “long stay” 5-6 days of chemotherapy this will be our cycle two of treatment. Jase’s numbers were good and we got admitted to do our cycle two of chemotherapy treatment. During this long stay Jase did get nauseous for his first time. But he did it like a champ! It brings us joy to once again be able to share a positive update on our Cancer Kickers teammate, David. This young man was diagnosed with B-cell Leukemia on February 10, 2022 and became a part of the Cancer Kickers team in April of that year. David recently shared with us that he has enjoyed wearing his CKSC hoodie ever since joining the team. He also informed us that he is back playing soccer just in time for his high school senior season. Presently, David is in remission. After a long and hard fight he is set to ring the bell in June of 2024. We are so proud of you, David! You have truly shown this cancer that is messed with the wrong person. It is our prayer that God equips you with the strength you need to finish these last few months of treatment strong!

Head to Leo's Facebook page (facebook.com/myheroleo) for a video of Leo's last chemo day! After 50 weeks Leo had his last day of chemotherapy on Monday the 22nd. The same day as his oldest brother's birthday. As you'll see we partied hard that day and continued to celebrate for a few days after. Now after a little rest we've got an update video from the day and we're going to be taking a couple weeks off until scan day. As soon as he gets the all clear from the scans we'll schedule surgery to get his port out and we will be able to move on from this phase and back into something close to normal.
