My family and I participated in PurpleStride for the second year this past weekend. The event raises money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. As you may know, we lost my mom and my aunt to pancreatic cancer. It is an ugly beast of a disease with a 5-year survival rate of only 13%. Although this has doubled since 2013, the number is still way too low. Organizations like PanCAN are looking to change that while also providing support to cancer patients and their families. I plan to take part in the PurpleStride walk every year and continue donating to PanCAN as I am able. If there is ever a worthy place to put my money, itโs here. I miss you so much, Mommy. Charity ride organised by @brumshospice โRide the reservoirโ Entered this recently after my Dad was put on end of life care and sadly passed away ๐ฏ๏ธThe hospice nurses were amazing providing pain relief being there to talk to getting medication promptly when needed the list is endless. Somehow the nurses always brought a smile to his face when they were around ๐ซถ๐ป. Itโs always a bitter sweet day focusing on Pancreatic Cancer and how itโs impacted my life, meeting others whose life it has also impacted but this morning was mainly filled with a lot of moments of joy and gratitude. Joe and I were able to do our volunteering thanks to the generosity of @juanita_oneill_ and @kaitlyn___oneill (and Zac and Isaac!) who played with the boys and took them round the course. The little troopers almost made it the whole way on scooters with Lachie having a little assistance from Joe to make the finish! 4.4km! Should tire them out tonight! April is Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Month. While #oesophagealcancer is considered not common, itโs important to be aware of the symptoms and risk factors. According to the @americancancersociety, more people die each year from oesophageal cancer than from melanoma, skin cancer or cervical cancer. With early diagnosis, oesophageal cancer is treatable, but too often, the cancer is diagnosed in the late stages. Early disease may be removable as an endoscopic day visit without surgery. According to the @cancercouncil: in Australia oesophageal cancer is most commonly found in the lower section of the oesophagus, adjoining the stomach. It is estimated that more than 1,700 people were diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2023. A little talk I did today around Pancreatic Cancer. Thank you for lacing up your shoes and hitting the pavement, it was great watching the sea of blue this morning. Today I want to share a story close to my heartโa story of courage, resilience, and the relentless fight against pancreatic cancer. In Australia, this silent killer claims the lives of thousands each year, often diagnosed too late for effective treatment. This year alone, an estimated 4500 people will face this daunting diagnosis, with survival rates lingering tragically low at only 12 1/2 per centโfar less than breast cancer. But amidst these sobering statistics, thereโs hope. Hope in our collective efforts to raise awareness, to recognise the signs and symptoms, and to advocate fiercely for our health. If you experience abdominal or back pain, unexplained weight loss, jaundice, digestive issues, or excessive fatigueโto name just a few - listen to your body, seek help, and donโt dismiss the signs. As runners, we understand the power of perseverance. We push through physical barriers, but we must also learn to listen to our bodies, to advocate for ourselves when something feels amiss. Today, as we come together for this memorial run, letโs not only honour the memory of those weโve lost, like my late husband Tony Druery and Shawn Claydon, but letโs also amplify our voices in support of those still fighting and in pursuit of better outcomes. This disease was chosen because the survival rate was abysmal. Fast forward three years, I received a phone call from my parents breaking the bad news to meโmom had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I knew the survival rate. Though six years have passed, not a day goes by that I donโt wish my mom was still here. I think about how much she would love spending time with my girls, how proud sheโd be of me, and what a wonderful dad and husband sheโd think Joey is. Today, while wearing my momโs favorite purple jacket, I walked alongside other families and colleagues who have gone through the same awful disease.
