Here is a post-mortem #brain with visible #frontal and #temporal lobes. These two areas are of interest in the #neuropathology of several conditions, including #frontotemporal #dementia and #Alzheimer’s disease. 🧠
Dolichoectasia (dolicho- means long): The artery under discussion is the basilar artery. It is dilated, with a rigid appearance and has yellowish discoloration. These changes are diagnostic for atherosclerosis and the vessel is also dilated. It is also elongated, widened, and tortuous. These features are that of dolichoectasia and are common in patients with advanced atherosclerosis involving this vessel. The most common sites are the basilar artery and the changes can extend to the vertebral artery. The other common site is the supraclinoid segment of the internal carotid artery with possible extension into the middle cerebral artery. Dolichoectasia has also been described in young patients not associated with atherosclerosis and some of them are associated with Ehler-Danlo’s syndrome type IV, Marfan’s syndrome, pseudoxanthoma elasticum, and a1-antitrypsin deficiency. #forensicpathology #forensicmedicine #forensicfacts #neuropathology #atherosclerosis

Histological features for grading have not been clearly defined and a definitive CNS WHO grade has not been established for MN1-altered astroblastoma. A vast majority presents with OLIG2 expression. Middle age patient with a temporal lobe tumor. No IHC. Last picture is the CNV plot for this tumor. High-grade glioma with pleomorphic and pseudopapillary features (HPAP). A recently described tumor not still on the WHO blue book. Deletion of 13 is characteristic (as seen on this CNV plot). As a rule of thumb, patients are not as elderly as those with GBMs nor as young as those with PXA or astroblastoma (main differentials). Submit your article by November 2024 to be part of this special issue! ✨ Prions are proteinaceous infectious particles resistant to many standard inactivation methods and are the major protein component of scrapie and CJD, classified as a prion diseases. Prion diseases are transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), i.e. transmissible, fatal neurodegenerative diseases in humans and animals that, upon neuropathological examination, display a typical “sponge” like appearance due to the holes observed in the brain. The prion concept has been more recently expanded to refer to misfolded proteins that are capable of converting a normal form of a protein into an abnormal form, which is thought to cause disease in humans. Recent research applies the prion concept to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. This special issue will provide a historical perspective of the field of prions, and provide an update on all aspects of prion protein and other proteins that accumulate in the brains of people with different neurodegenerative diseases, ranging from biology to pathobiology, biomarkers, and ongoing therapeutic strategies. PD Dr. Josefine Radke beschäftigt sich als Neuropathologin mit der Diagnostik und Erforschung von Krankheiten, die das zentrale und periphere Nervensystem betreffen. Während ihrer Förderung als BIH Charité Clinician Scientist lag ihr Fokus auf der Erforschung von Tumoren im Lymphgewebe. Gemeinsam mit Kolleg*innen konnte Radke zu einem besseren Verständnis der genetischen Landschaft von ZNS-Lymphomen beitragen. „Das Clinician Scientist-Programm ist eine fantastische Möglichkeit, Forschung und Klinik zu verbinden. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass es mich nicht nur zu einer besseren Forscherin, sondern insgesamt zu einer besseren Ärztin gemacht hat“, betont sie im FACES-Interview. Together with colleagues, Radke was able to contribute to a better understanding of the genetic landscape of these CNS lymphoma. “The Clinician Scientist Program is a fantastic opportunity to combine research with clinic work. I have the feeling that it not only made me a better researcher, but all in all, a better doctor,” she emphasizes in the FACES interview with us. Stiftung Charité funded her from 2015 to 2018. When someone donates organs for living organ donation, it’s a lot easier to understand how big of an impact that act has on the lives of others!
