Renovations continue on the old Coca-Cola bottling plant. Check out that belfry and those finials! Corner of S Andrews Ave and SE 7 St in downtown FTL. Built 1938. Spared from the wrecking ball when the judicial complex was expanded. The large picture windows enabled passersby to watch the bottling process. Looks like the future use will be as office space. Next stop: Progress. The Greyhound bus station at 515 NE 3rd St in downtown FTL has been demolished & removed. Best I can tell, it had been in operation at that location since 1960. There are archival photos of an earlier station, location undetermined (see pics). I've taken many a journey from that station, mostly headed north with the occasional jaunt south. There are apartments planned for the site, which also includes the Sherwin-Williams next door (see rendering). Someday there will be new people making new memories here. Fort Dallas and the Wagner homestead in Miami. The two oldest structures in Dade County, dating from the 1840s & '50s. These buildings are remnants of South Florida as an outpost in the wilderness, with all the good and bad of human nature occurring in & outside these very walls. The fort building was constructed with large blocks of stone & later relocated, after also serving as a home. The Wagner home stood by their coontie mill as settlers returned, and may have been built with wood salvaged from shipwrecks. No sooner did we turn on to A1A for this last beachside trip than a kicking leg caught my eye. A young woman with rolling suitcase had her hands full so she found a creative way to flag us.    'You know how to stop a bus.' I commended her amusing signal. "Some drivers don't see you when you wave your arm." She explained, not wanting to get passed by a bus that comes every hour. She was a leisure traveller, simply riding the bus till it didn't go any further, then dragging her baggage along with her into the calm quiet night. Halloween morning, my bus number started with 13 and was acting up. The headsign would randomly go blank, confusing passengers waiting at stops served by multiple routes. One of those passengers was Dierdre, waiting under the black olives at her usual spot. She was talky this morning about everything on her plate, struggling along the tragic path of her legendary namesake. The route rolled along, reliable and mostly on time. We pulled into the north layover, I popped the parking brake, and went to unclick my seat belt. Two men with the grit of street life on their skin and hair strolled by my open door, talking about the holiday. With the fresh sun casting gold in their faces, they glanced my way and one almost immediately pointed at me. "Look at this guy, he's dressed as a bus driver!" He proclaimed.    'That's my costume.' The start of another exciting week in Broward County. Looks like it's gonna be a wet one. In the midst of the storm, good things will grow... - We're eastbound on Sistrunk, crossing 9th Ave. I can see a young man on the opposite side of the street. He's looking around curiously, sees the bus, and rushes across to the bus stop. There's a vibe of anxiety here, and he hurriedly finds a seat. The bus is quiet this trip, maybe as folks anticipate the connections they'll make at Central Terminal. The young man speaks up. The worry and wondering is palpable. Whatever life issue he is going through has affected him deeply and he's reaching out for some direction. "You need to stay focused on what you tryin' to do, and good things will grow," another replied in a calm and measured way that bore the weight of hard-won wisdom.
