The story behind the painting: A young British aristocrat bought this pastel, his father who had a very grand title was a client of the gallery in London. On receiving my catalogue for “Working Girls,” the father promptly threw it into the waste paper basket, only to be retrieved by his son; after perusing the catalogue the young man arrived in London the next day and bought this. I guess it was generational.

No soportamos la idea de que haya una autoridad por encima de nosotros ❤ Una y otra vez constatamos lo que nos cuesta decir ′lo siento′. De alguna manera siempre tratamos de buscar la explicación y la justificación, por lo menos para que esa culpa no sea tan grande como evidentemente es. Pero qué interesante que cuando la palabra de Dios habla de este nuestro problema que denominamos con este término tan impopular y ridiculizado, que es el ′pecado′, utiliza diferentes expresiones. Nuestro texto bíblico utiliza diferentes vocablos para describir cual es la tragedia y el problema del hombre. Entender este problema es tan fundamental y básico porque como vemos aquí no hay mayor necesidad espiritual que podamos tener en esta vida. No hay necesidad comparable a la necesidad de perdón de nuestros pecados. Comer es lo que cubre nuestra necesidad física más básica; espiritualmente, sin embargo, es el perdón el que cubre la necesidad más básica. Y para poder entender qué significa ese perdón tenemos que entender de qué tenemos que ser perdonados. Este es el gran problema que tenemos una y otra vez. La Biblia describe con diferentes expresiones y vocablos cual es el sentido de nuestra culpa. La expresión más básica con la que se refiere al pecado es errar al blanco, fallar o no llegar a la meta. Esa expresión nos habla de ese sentido de frustración que acompaña toda nuestra existencia por la cual parece que no alcanzamos nunca el propósito para el cual estamos aquí. Nigel Van Wieck, The Harlem Line, n/d, private collection While we’re on the subject of great contemporary artists here is @rizocollectables favorite. Nigel Van Wieck was born in the Unitied Kingdom in Bexley (Kent), in 1949. He received his training at the Hornsey College of Art in London. After initial artistic works, he turned to the Kinetic Art. Eventually, he began to experiment with light (particularly neon light). After studying in Europe, he understood how to develop his own world. In the United States, he was struck by the American realist style of Eakins and Homer’s paintings. Nigel Van Wieck has shifted the style and themes of Edward Hopper in our time. His works seem to belong to a distant era, even inside the train car or in the sunny beaches, with characters that transmit their solitude to you but unlike Hopper his subjects are portrayed in a much more sensual way. “I always want to capture a “moment in time”, it makes my paintings real and timeless. Avent cadeau 🎁 13. Instant curieux. Excitation du déballage matinal. Regard qui se perd sur un lit, ou un sofa, deux jambes nues et des draps. L’illustration de #nigelvanwieck laisse entrevoir quelque chose du propos. Un jeune auteur français, qui en est déjà à son cinquième roman, aborde dans ce #toutcequimanque la rupture amoureuse et tout ce qu’il “avait cru malin de taire” nous dit-il. N’est-ce pas un sujet vu et revu ? Lu et relu ? L’auteur #florentoiseau nous est décrit comme un écrivain à la #johnfante (dont je n’ai lu avec bonheur que #monchienstupide ), maniant comme le « maître » et habilement pointe de sarcasme et de mélancolie, ce qui devrait réjouir et émouvoir en même temps. I found a better photo of @piercebrosnanofficial than the one I posted 3 years ago, as that photo was quite blurry: “I was in my studio painting when the phone rang. “Hello darling, how are you? It’s Liz.” It was my wonderful very English friend who’s a Hollywood agent. “I’m in Chelsea and I’ve been looking at galleries with Pierce, we have an hour to kill, can we visit you?” “Of course,” I said. My studio is in the fashion district a few blocks from Chelsea so I was a good refuge when one is taking a movie star around Chelsea and have an hour to kill. On my floor in my building, several talent agencies reside, I know most of the people who work in them but I rarely see them, the halls are always empty. When my friend arrived on the 10th floor of my building with Pierce Brosnan, everybody who worked in a talent agency was in the hall. I could hear the commotion: “Can I help you? Who are you looking for? I love your movies.” Over the cacophony of sound, the clear and resonate voice of Pierce could be heard saying, “Thanks I’m here to visit Nigel.” When I opened the door to my studio to welcome my friend Liz and her guest, I thought, “Wow do all these guys have radar?” Pierce Brosnan, who is also a painter, was an extraordinarily nice man, we talked about art, I showed him my work and he showed me his. He then suggested we take photos together and he became a director. He told my friend Liz to take the photos while he posed with me, he told me how to sit and how to project for the camera. But alas my friend Liz did not know how to take a photo on an iPhone and they all came out blurred. This is the only one that was close to being in focus and a record of that afternoon. That night as I entered the elevator with other people from my floor, they all smiled at me and then somebody said, ”So you know Pierce Brosnan.” My star had suddenly risen on my floor.”

The last Sip of Summer
There are moments when somebody’s act can change one’s life. What’s intriguing about this dynamic is that what is inconsequential to the giving person can be profound to the receiving person. I had a birthday, it was at a time when I was very young and making serious course corrections with my painting. When I went down in the elevator to collect the last of my birthday dinner guests, I was greeted by my wife’s cousin and her plus one: an elegant man in a three piece suit who was finishing giving instructions to the chauffeur of his Rolls Royce. She greeted me with a kiss and said “He’s your birthday present.” My birthday present was Fernando Botero. After dinner he and I went into my studio and talked, he was generous in his observations and during our conversation he told me that I was a painter of light and therefore I should be working from a dark ground and not a white one as it would give me more control; a light bulb went off. Years later I reminded him of that night, he had no memory of it. Botero died on Friday. I will always be grateful for that evening when he and I sat in my studio and talked about painting, it changed my life. Thanks Fernando safe journey. Yes oil pastel on paper 12 x 16 inches
