Sunset sky in the quiet streets of Coronado Island. Walking from the Hotel del Coronado to the ferry terminal on the other side of the island I passed this street in a quiet residential area. Something about it spoke to me. Was it the trees? The sky? The quiet desolation? I’ll never know, but I thought it looked pretty cool 😊 . . . . #sandiego #coronado #socal #calilife #california #streetphotography #urbanphotography #sunset #nikon #nikoncaphotochallenge #picoftheday #instagood #igdaily

Hotel del Coronado. This legendary hotel and U.S. National Historic Site was built in 1887 with the goal of being “the talk of the Western world.” When it opened in 1888 it was the largest hotel in the world! The Del celebrates its rich history as a proud host to celebrities, royalty, and beach-loving facilities over the last 137 years. As with most hotels of this age it doesn’t come without its own “haunted” tales and paranormal activity, one stemming from the mysterious death of Kate Morgan in 1892. Some of the Del’s noble guests include Thomas Edison, Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, among many others. . . . . #hoteldelcoronado #sandiego #socal #california #hoteldesign #travel #travelgram #architecture #american #usa #nikon #photography #nikoncaphotochallenge #picoftheday #instagram #igdaily #fyp #beach

The wonderful teahouses of Nepal. Trekking Everest Base Camp, some might expect very basic conditions, but this is far from the case. Yes the higher you go, the more reduced the facilities, but you’d expect that. Each accommodation you were met with friendly smiles from the locals, a comfy mattress and blankets and nice warm food! Some had hot showers, snacks like Oreo’s and most had fizzy drinks like Fantas. After a long day trekking, the teahouses are lovely spots to rest the legs, grab a nice meal and play some cards and rest up till the next day begins! #nepal #everest #everestbasecamp #trek #trekking #teahouse #nepalteahouse #hiking #photography #sherpa #nikon #nikonsocial #nikoncaphotochallenge

One of my top 3 favourite cats, the Puma Concolor, better known as the puma, mountain lion, catamount, cougar, or panther, is a large cat native to the Americas. Yes, these names all refer to the same cat! The puma is the cat with the greatest number of names according to its Guiness World Record of over 40. Named for its uniform color, the puma ranges from grey to reddish-brown, with a long tail and occasional facial color patterns. The puma averages around 100-135lb and 4ft in length excluding the long tail, and in rare instances reaching over 200lb! The puma’s home territory spans almost all of North, Central, and South America, giving it the widest distribution of any New World mammal. Pumas are adapted to live in a wide variety of habitats including desert scrub, swamps, and forests. Pumas are active mostly at dusk, night, and dawn, with its prime food source being hooved animals larger than itself, with each puma killing an average of 48 ungulates each year. Being slower than most of its prey, the puma relies on stealth to kill, springing from close range usually from behind the victim. Adult males and females are both solitary except for breeding, or cub rearing in the case of the female (lasting 10-26 months). Cubs are raised without assistance from males, who will often kill cubs that are not their own, given the opportunity. Pumas live at very low density, requiring very large areas with sufficient prey and cover, often only 1-5 per 100 square km. Home ranges of females often overlap, but there is very little overlap between territories of adjacent males. In most of North America, populations are thought to be stable or increasing, while in South America, puma populations are threatened by hunters and farmers. Conservation efforts have been ongoing in South America, where farmers have been employing the use of dogs to ward off the cats from their livestock herds and avoid having to kill these beautiful and necessary creatures. . . . . #puma #cougar #mountainlion #panther #bigcat #meow #cat #catlife #nikon #nikoncaphotochallenge #wildlife #wildlifephotography #sandiegozoo #cali #socal #pumaconcolor

The harpy eagle is legendary, although few people have seen one in their native habitat. These great birds are named after harpies, the predatory “frightful, flying creatures with hooked beak and claws” of Greek mythology. This dark gray bird of prey has a very distinctive look, with feathers atop its head that fan into a bold crest when the bird feels threatened. Like most eagles, the female is almost twice as large as the male. The harpy eagle’s legs can be as thick as a small child’s wrist, and its curved, back talons are larger than grizzly bear claws at 5 inches (13 centimeters) long! Harpy eagles range from Mexico to northern Argentina and live in forested areas. Despite their wingspan, which can reach up to 6.5 feet across, harpies fly through their forest home with great agility. A harpy nest measures about 4 feet thick and 5 feet across, large enough for a person to lie across! It has excellent vision and can see something less than 1 inch in size from almost 220 yards away. The deadly talons of a harpy eagle can exert several hundred pounds of pressure (over 110lb), crushing the bones of its prey and instantly killing its victim. A harpy also feeds on opossums, porcupines, young deer, snakes, and iguanas. . . . . #eagle #raptor #birdphotography #birdofprey #sandiegozoo #birdwatching #harpyeagle #nikon #nikoncaphotochallenge #picoftheday #instagram #wildlife #socal #cali

The true King, or in this case, Queen, of the jungle: The Jaguar 🐆. The Jaguar is very similar to the Leopard with Jaguars being native to the Americas, and Leopards native to Asia/Africa. These cats are quite literally murder machines, the name “Jaguar” coming from the indigenous word “Yaguar”, meaning “He who kills with one leap”. Weighing up to 265lb and reaching up to 6ft in length, these skilled hunters prey on a wide range of animals from capybaras, turtles, fish, and monkeys to South Americas largest mammal, the Tapir. They’ve even been known to take down massive river-dwelling predators like the Caiman (members of the Alligator family). These beautiful and powerful cats are at home in the water and learn to swim and hunt in the water as cubs. Jaguars kill differently than all other cats, taking down prey by biting on the back of the neck and puncturing or crushing the skull of the animal. They are able to kill an animal 4x their size, and even drag them up a riverbank and straight up a tree to feast. All of this leading me to wonder how the Lion was ever crowned King of the Jungle 🧐. I was lucky enough to see this gorgeous young female Jaguar at the San Diego zoo. Here she is snoozing in the midday sun, like most cats, sleeping a large portion of the day. . . . . #jaguar #leopard #cat #bigcat #meow #wildcat #sandiegozoo #nikon #nikoncaphotochallenge #usa #cali #socal #jungle #catsofinstagram #naturephotography #wildlife_shots #wildlifephotography #wildlife #catlover

Love a silky long exposure shot. Froze me arse off to get this one, trudging through knee deep snow a couple hundred metres off the main road, over the train tracks and on to the mostly frozen river. With less than 100 of these stunningly beautiful creatures left in the wild, the Amur Leopard is the most endangered of the leopard sub-species. They are poached largely for their beautiful, spotted furs, which are sold for $500-1000 in agricultural villages surrounding the forests where they live. Native to the Russian Far East and some North-East parts of China, the Amur Leopard has adapted to the temperate, mixed forests of these northern regions. They are solitary creatures, weighing up to 100lb and living 10-15 years (up to 20 in captivity). This incredible animal can reach speeds of 60km/h and jump 20ft horizontally and 10ft vertically. It was an amazing experience to lock eyes with a few of these cats at the San Diego Zoo. The zoo is making a substantial effort at repopulating these beautiful leopards, dedicating several of their African Leopard habitats to these critically endangered Amur Leopards. This was one of the young male leopards, however, other enclosures had a mother with 2 one-year-old cubs and another young male, totalling 5 healthy individuals. . . . . #wwf #sandiegozoo #leopard #amurleopard #endangeredspecies #worldwildlife #bigcat #cat #meow #beautiful #sandiego #usa #california #wildlife_bigcats #wildlifephotography #nature #instagram #igdaily #picoftheday #natgeo #nikoncaphotochallenge #nikond850 #nikon
