The Mutant Rises I love macro photography, but I haven't partaken in a while for a couple reasons. First, when I upgraded my camera bodies to the D850 and D500, neither had an on-board flash to act as a commander for Nikon's R1C1 macro strobes. As a result of having been spoiled by the TTL capabilities of that system, I had no desire to go back to the clunky DIY system I was using previously. I was also a little bitter that Nikon had no intention of making a lens equivalent to Canon's MP-E 65mm. Then, in early 2020, at the ImagingUSA conference in Nashville, I bought Laowa's 2.5-5x 25mm Ultra Macro lens to start stepping into extreme macro while still debating between an external commander for the R1C1 strobes or another DIY system. No more than three weeks later, we all collectively lost our minds and I spent my photography budget on garden, orchard, and other homestead upgrades. Fast forward three years, and I'm back at ImagingUSA, again in Nashville, again standing in the Laowa booth looking over their stuff, when I suggest "you know, you ought to have an adapter to use Nikon's R1C1 with the ultra macro." They gave a rather corporatized response about patents and copywrites and whatnot, which made a lot of sense. So I offered that I'd been tinkering with an idea for doing just that with a 3d printed DIY solution. He was visibly excited about the idea and asked if I could show him the final product once it was running. Well, here it is in carbon fiber nylon, and I may also run carbon fiber PC for comparison. I need to dig out his business card to send him a few snaps, but otherwise this is my public announcement and release. The file should be on Thingiverse and Odysee in a few days once I generate some thumbnails. Leaf miner. So, this is a leaf miner. It's the larvae of a tiny moth. You can see it's trail (moving right to left) in the first photo with the miner at the top left. In the second photo, I've zoomed and lit from behind so you can clearly see it. Cool thing, they release an enzyme that stops leaf from turning brown. These mushrooms only grow during the cold snap we experience here in the Florida Panhandle around January-February. To the human eye, they're black as a lump of coal and you can't make out any details. Properly lit, however, they're fascinating. I'm using two lens mounted SB-R200 speed lights (using a Nikon R1C1 rig) in TTL mode for the foreground and fill, and an SB-700 on a separate channel in manual 1/4 flash mode from behind/right of the subject to create a bit of a halo effect that makes the black mushroom jump out from the dark busy background. Godox acaba de lanzar al mercado el twin flash MF12. Aquí les comparto algunas características de este sistema y una pequeña comparación que pude hacer hoy con el viejo y famoso R1C1 de nikon: 📌 Tiene modo TTL y manual 📌 No incluye un disparador (trigger o comando) pero funciona con cualquier trigger de marca godox. 📌 No requiere baterias o pilas, púes tiene una bateria de litio integrada que se carga por un cable tipo C, que según el fabricante resiste 500 flashes a plena potencia con un tiempo de 0,01 a 1,7 segundos. 📌Luz de modelado y flash de buena potencia 📌 Compatible con la mayoría de marcas de cámaras conocidas 📌 Es inalámbrico 📌 Viene con un kit de filtros de color, 2 disfusores acrílicos y anillos de montaje de 49 mm, 52 mm, 55 mm, 58 mm, 62 mm, 67 mm, 72 mm y 77 mm. 📸📸Comparación : Usando la misma cámara, potencia de flash (1/4) rebotadores de luz y lente macro, así como los mismos settings pude observar que hay una diferencia en la temperatura de color que emite cada sistema de iluminación, mostrándose el godox MF12 más calido, además con más potencia de luz que nikon, pienso que aunque se podría pensar en algunas mejoras es un sistema prometedor que para mi opinión está por encima de las demás marcas genéricas como meike y bolt y en costo beneficio es una excelente opción para macrofotografía dental.
