💿”Breaking Point” by Digital Summer💿 . Lately I’ve been revisiting a lot of albums that I was obsessively listening to during my teenaged years. Back then, I was listening to nothing but alternative metal, post-grunge, and nu metal, essentially anything that was featured on Sirus XM’s Octane channel. That channel alone exposed me to a seemingly endless amount of similar sounding bands, both well-known and underground. One of those bands was Digital Summer. I’d been slightly familiar with their name thanks to iTunes’ suggesting I buy their albums based on the other stuff I’d been buying on the platform. But it wasn’t until I heard the song “Dance In The Fire” that made me a fan of the band. There was something about that song that had the right amount of edginess and saddness that completely sucked me in. It quickly became a go-to song for when I was feeling down. I’d purchased a few of the band’s albums digitally but I’d never owned any of their stuff physically partly because I didn’t know it existed and partly because I was content with my digital copies. Today, because Digital Summer wasn’t signed onto a big label, CD copies of their albums are really hard to get- much to my dissapointment now that I’m a CD collector. This copy I dropped a pretty penny on but it was significantly cheaper than how much some of other listings on Discogs and Ebay were charging. It’s funny looking back on bands like these now because a lot of them have become wildly popular again thanks to the newer generation of sad teenagers. Bands like Deftones, Slipknot, Korn and System of a Down have become trendy again sparking this weird resurgance of interest in nu metal and general 90’s rock. The whole phenomenon is strange, to say the least, but I suppose I’m just getting old... Sadly, a lot of bands like Digital Summer will likely fade into obscurity being overshadowed by contemporaries. In Her Place by Edel Coffey Thank you to @elaineeganbooks @hachetteireland for the #gifted copy. In Her Place was one of my most highly anticipated reads of 2024, having read Edel Coffey’s debut novel Breaking Point, which was the An Post Irish Book Awards Crime Fiction Book of the Year 2022. This book tells the story of a woman in her late thirties, who has sacrificed her journalism career and personal life to care of her dying mother. After her mother passes away she tries to get her life back on track. While on a job in upstate New York, she meets Justin in a bar and they hit it off. However, it turns out he’s married, with a child. His wife is dying, but when she makes an unexpected improvement it turns their new life upside down. I first picked this up a couple of weeks ago and knew it was the kind of book I would need to devote time to, so I temporarily put it aside ‘til I had more time. A few days ago I noticed it was available as an audiobook on Spotify Premium so decided to use 8 hours 13 mins of my 15 hours, and I flew through it. It’s a page turner in any format. A small criticism was that while the book is set in New York, with the main character being a Brooklynite, there were a lot of Irish terms - like crèche instead of daycare, sweets for candy, and mobile for cellphone, which I felt could’ve been picked up in the editing process. I’ve seen some reviews and comments mentioning the need for ‘suspension of disbelief’. I didn’t find this an issue - bar one scene I personally felt could have been left out - because first of all I didn’t feel the circumstances were beyond the realms of possibility, but also it’s fiction. Based on Journalist Peter Greste’s memoir, The First Casualty, the story follows Peter’s 7 year imprisonment in egypt after being accused of “Falsifying news reports”.
