A few weeks ago I started a #throwback series from the river cruise I took last summer. I didn’t mean to be away so long… but that’s the end of the school year for you! Hardly a free second to catch my breath! Anyway, before posting about our next stop I wanted to share a few pics taken “on the road” (er, ship). Partly because, well, you’ll see why. The scenery was gorgeous! But also because this was my biggest question before taking a river cruise - what would it be like on the ship? And would the views be worth the cost of cruising rather than seeing the country by car or train? Spoiler alert - the answer is yes! It was totally worth it. With the exception of the last pic here, which was in the ship’s dining room, I took all of these from my room. And to explain a little - some river cruise ships have actual balconies, but on our #emeraldrivercruise we had a panorama balcony, where one whole wall essentially is a window that lowers halfway. We LOVED this because it gave us gorgeous views straight from our room (plus fresh air). So if we were pulling into a port in the morning while we were still in our room getting ready, we didn’t miss a thing. 3 years ago today I had a operation that I thought would change my life forever....thought I could Ditch all the drugs and go on to live a relatively normal pain free life,and for a while I did....until last year when the pain came back with a vengeance and oh my god does she hurt. Twice last year I was admitted into Stamford hospital onto the pain clinic ward for long lasting steroid injections deep into the muscles and joint. Things are going to be quiet around here for a bit! I just had a hip replacement surgery done Thursday and will be down for about 8 weeks or so, which means that there will be no in-person lessons, Socials, or Pack Walks until I am recovered and cleared by my medical team to return to work. That being said, I will still have Virtual Lessons available! This includes Virtual Behavioral Consultations, as well. Some are long and some are short. Each type has their own pros and cons, and different uses for different people. Here’s what Kate has to say about it: “A cane is described most often as a ‘walking stick’ but, while it's true my cane offers stability when I walk, I use it mostly as a ‘standing stick’. It took me a while to post because I’ve been kind of overwhelmed at getting my Graduado cord with teachers from both coasts @joycapoeira @pavaozinha @seananthonymoran (and alongside the incomparable members of the secret bateria!). But it’s bittersweet. I love Capoeira and I’m so grateful to be a part of such a supportive community, but because I’m struggling to move at the moment there have been a lot of imposter syndrome feelings to work through. I don’t usually post personal stuff, but I guess I’d like people to know why my movements are so limited, and maybe if you’re going through the same thing hit me up. In 2020, after more than ten years of groin pain that I had always dismissed as muscular, I was diagnosed with severe hip arthritis in one hip. Since then, I’ve seen a big decline in overall mobility. I had long battled my body, wondering why I was getting less flexible despite putting more effort in. And then I found out why. It’s just bad luck. A bone (or two!) that isn’t shaped quite right. The diagnosis marked a tipping point and since then I’ve quickly started to notice more and more things that I can’t do. The hip is the center of your body. It affects everything. It can be hard to put on socks, tie shoes, get dressed, even sit for any length of time. I used to work on moves such as aú de frente, bananeira, queda de rins… but at the moment my hip is too sore & stiff even for basic movements that I long took for granted- rolê, esquiva, aú, round kicks. Right now, playing in the roda is like trying to have a conversation after eliminating a bunch of fundamental words from your vocabulary. But I’m still training Capoeira because I love it. I love the music, the art, the culture, the history, and the friendships. And I love this little nook of community & energy in North East LA that has brought an eclectic and amazing group of people together and pushes us to keep moving, to show up, and to be better. Thank you Pavao and Chegado and @akquebrado for welcoming me into the @capoeirabrasilnela fold and supporting me as I figure my way through this latest challenge.
