OKLAHOMA STRONG: On April 19, 1995, at 9:02 a.m. a 4,800-pound ammonium nitrate-fuel oil bomb exploded in a Ryder truck parked at the north entrance of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and injuring approximately 850. I was 8 when this tragic event happened and I donโ€™t remember much. I do know that a year or 2 later I went there with my 6th grade band class. I have pictures of flowers and other items on the fence, the only memorial at the time. I remember seeing the pictures of the people who have passed away in the attack on the news during the time and years after. Sadly the new generation of Okies are not familiar with this tragedy like they should. The bombing was the nationโ€™s worst single act of domestic terrorism (superceded in numbers of dead only by the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, in New York City). 30 children were orphaned, 219 children lost at least one parent, 462 people were left homeless, and 7,000 people lost their workplace. The City of Oklahoma Cityโ€™s Final Report estimated property damage to more than 300 buildings in a 48-square-block area. Today, #WeRemember those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever by the tragedy on April 19, 1995. #DayOfRemembrance #oklahomacity #oklahomacitybombing #oklahomastrong #weremember #oklahomatragedy #tragedy #thisdayinhistory #oklahomahistory #thisdayinoklahoma

April 19, 1995 9:01 AM - The Innocence before the attack 9:02 AM - A truck bomb was detonated outside of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, leaving 168 people dead, including 19 children. 9:03 AM - The moment healing began Timothy McVeigh, a name all Oklahomans know as the terrorist who shook our state, detonated the Ryder rental truck that he parked in front of the building. McVeigh received the death sentence in a federal case, and was executed by lethal injection in 2001. Terry Nichols, assistant who planned & prepped the bombing. Nichols was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release in a federal case. He was tried by the State of Oklahoma, and was sentenced in 2004 to 161 life sentences without the possibility of parole. At the time, it was the largest example of terrorism in the United States prior to the 9/11 attacks. It remains the largest act of domestic terrorism in the United States. This brought forth the Oklahoma Standard. May we never forget - may we always conquer. #April19th #MurrahBombing #OklahomaStrong
