Happy Birthday to the #Roman #Emperor, Otho, born #OTD 28th April AD32. He was born into a wealthy family in Ferentium (now Ferento) in central Italy. Otho was close to Nero but he was forced to divorce his wife Poppaea Sabina so that Nero could marry her. He was then banished to the governorship of Lusitania but he never forgave Nero for marrying Poppaea. Otho seized power himself on 15th January AD69 after the murder of Galba but was emperor for only three months. Bust - Capitoline Museum, Rome @museicapitolini Cameo - Penn Museum, Philadelphia

Killing a bottle of the inaugural bottling of Three Rivers Rye Whiskey from Cali Distilling and enjoying a Tatuaje 20 cigar. .... On this day in history, April 27, 1865, the greatest maritime disaster in US history took place when the Steamship Sultana's boilers blew up as she was upbound from Memphis, TN, on the Mississippi River. Sultana was a sidewheel steamship rated for 376 passengers designed for the Mississippi River trade. The Civil War had recently ended, leaving thousands of former prisoners of war needing transportation back north from Vicksburg, MS. Sultana was loaded with passengers, freight, and recently freed prisoners of war. Estimates put the total number of passengers at approximately 2,100. In the early morning hours of April 27th, about 7 miles north of Memphis, three of Sultana's four boilers exploded in a cascade of steam and fire. It took 30 minutes for the first vessel to happen on the scene and begin rescuing survivors. At the same time, survivors, bodies, and wreckage was seen drifting past the Memphis waterfront. The true death toll will never be known, though most estimates put it at between 1,160 to as high as 1,800. 786 were rescued from the Mississippi River, 31 of which would perish from their ordeal. Of the approximately 50 women and children aboard, only 4 women survived, 2 passengers and 2 crew. In all 963 survived. .... "of all the sounds and noises I ever heard that was the most sorrowful; some cursing, calling for help; and shrieking. I will never forget those awful sounds." - ship's log entry, USS Tyler referring to the loss of the Steamship Sultana .... #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #cigar #CigarLover #CigarAfficionado #cigarphoto #cigarsnob #cigarlife #sailorandsticks #cigarsandwhiskey #TapThatAsh #whiskey #WhiskeyLover #WhiskeyAfficionado #whiskeyphoto #whiskeylife #whiskeyneat #whiskeyandhistory #whiskeygram #quote #quotestagram

#ThisDayInHistory April 27 On this day in 1994, after 46 years of apartheid under National Party Rule and 300 years of colonial occupation of South Africa 🇿🇦, the first democratic, multi-party elections were held. South Africans celebrate their "Freedom Day" every April 27, when they remember their country's pivotal first democratic election in 1994 that announced the official end of the racial segregation and oppression of apartheid. Today Saturday is the 30th anniversary of that momentous vote, when millions of Black South Africans, young and old, decided their own futures for the first time, a fundamental right they had been denied by a white minority government. The first all-race election saw the previously banned African National Congress party win overwhelmingly and made its leader, Nelson Mandela, the country's first Black president four years after he was released from prison. Nearly 20 million South Africans of all races voted, compared with just 3 million white people in the last general election under apartheid in 1989.

ON THIS DAY IN 1944 : On the 27th of April 1944, Sqn Ldr Tony Martindale reached mach 0.92 in a Spitfire PR.XI. At this time, the Aerodynamics Flight at Farnborough was conducting tests close to the sound barrier for research purposes. One member was the tall Squadron Leader Tony Martindale AFC and bar, who on the 27th of April took off in his Spitfire PR.XI. The idea was to fly this stripped photo reconnaissance Spitfire Mk.XI to 40,000 feet and travel straight and level until the top speed of the aircraft was reached. The aircraft should then be put into a 45-degree dive until a speed of Mach 0.86 was reached, at which point the pilot would pull out. Pulling on the control column at this speed would be the equivalent to pulling 60 pounds or 27 kilograms towards you. On the 27th, the plunge was entered by Martindale, where he reached a speed of Mach 0.92 to the point where the speed reduction gear on the propeller had failed and the airscrew became detached from the aircraft. Prior to this, Martindale had attempted to pull out of the dive, trying to pull 45 kilograms of force into his chest. However, the immediate loss of weight put the aircraft into a near vertical climb where 11 g’s were forced upon the pilot. When Martindale woke up, he was back at 40,000 feet, but even without power, he still managed to make a wheels down landing at Farnborough. Upon his dismount from the Spitfire, not only did he realise the engine had been thrust forward through the cowling, but the wings, horizontal stabilisers and the tail plane had all been swept back by the force being enacted on the aircraft and the speed it was travelling at. A subsequent investigation was held on why the reduction gear failed. Nevertheless, the speed Martindale reached on that day is still the world record for the fastest speed that any piston engined aircraft has flown at and has provided us with crucial knowledge on the subject of high speed flight. #rae #farnborough #airport #aerodrome #airfield #testing #experimentation #soundbarrier #mach1 #machone #ww2 #ww#raf #royalairforce #1944 #thisdayinhistory #27

On this day in 1943, Polish World War II cavalry officer, intelligence agent, and resistance leader, Witold Pilecki, escaped Auschwitz after volunteering to sneak into the concentration camp three years earlier. The secret reports he sent out to the Allies while imprisoned were the first of their kind. He also organized an underground Military Organization Union (Związek Organizacji Wojskowej, ZOW). Its tasks were to improve the morale of the inmates, provide news from outside the camp, distribute extra food and clothing to its members, set up intelligence networks, and train detachments to take over the camp in the event of a relief attack. He later took part in the Warsaw Uprising. In 1948 he was killed by the Soviet forces occupying Poland at the time. Nguyễn Huệ, also known as Emperor Quang Trung, was a prominent military leader and emperor of Vietnam in the late 18th century. He was one of the three Tây Sơn brothers who led the Tây Sơn Rebellion against the ruling Nguyễn lords and the Trịnh lords, ultimately overthrowing the Later Lê dynasty and reuniting Vietnam under his rule. Born in 1753 in Bình Định Province, Nguyễn Huệ rose through the ranks of the Tây Sơn Rebellion and became a skilled military commander. In 1788, his forces defeated the Nguyễn lords and captured their capital Phú Xuân (now Huế). The following year, he defeated the Trịnh lords and captured their capital Thăng Long (now Hanoi), proclaiming himself Emperor Quang Trung and establishing the Tây Sơn dynasty. To deter potential attacks, he sought to restore the tributary relationship with China, and in 1789, the Qing Emperor recognized him as the King of Annam (Vietnam), though sources suggest Nguyễn Huệ sent an imposter to Beijing for the formal investiture ceremony. Despite his short reign, Nguyễn Huệ's military achievements and the establishment of the Tây Sơn dynasty left a lasting impact on Vietnamese history, and he is remembered as a symbol of resistance against foreign domination. #history #historylesson #thisdayinhistory #worldhistory #historygeek #historylovers #lovehistory #historicalfiction #historicalromance #historicalfashion #historicalplace #historicalcostume #arthistory #ancienthistory #historic #historymemes #historyofart #historyfacts #historynerd #historychannel #historybuff #historylovers #historylover Info obtained from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ng%E1%BB%8Dc_H%E1%BB%93i-%C4%90%E1%BB%91ng_%C4%90a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quang_Trung

Today in 1780, the Marquis de Lafayette arrived in Boston aboard the Hermione, returning to the colonies with the beginnings of an army from France. Having left after asking for leave in October of 1778, Lafayette arrived in Paris in February of 1779 where he was immediately placed under house arrest for disobeying the king; as his initial voyage to America had been against the King’s wishes. After eight days, he was released, the imprisonment merely symbolic. While in France, Lafayette argued for an invasion of Britain and worked closely with Benjamin Franklin to secure an army under the command of General Rochambeau for the American cause. The result of their efforts was the Expédition Particulière, the French army which helped America secure their victory over the British. Unlike the French who arrived with the Expédition Particulière, the Marquis first arrived in America in June of 1777. In 1776, the French had planned to send officers to the colonies to aid in the fight against the British, however the plan disintegrated after the British caught wind of it and threatened to declare war. Regardless, the Marquis was set on participating, and began to conspire an alternative route to America. After several close calls and clever ruses, the Marquis successfully disobeyed orders (and his family) and sailed for America on April 26, 1777. Once in America, Lafayette was quickly swept up into the Revolution. #onthisday 27 April 1882 Prince Leopold married Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont. Insisting that the children of British monarchs should marry into other reigning Protestant families, Queen Victoria suggested Princess Helene Friederike, the daughter of Georg Viktor, reigning Prince of Waldeck-Pyrmont. On 27 April 1882, Leopold & Helena were married, at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Leopold & Helena enjoyed a happy (although brief) marriage. In 1883, Leopold became a father when his wife gave birth to a daughter, Alice. Leopold died aged 30 in 1884 shortly before the birth of his son, Charles Edward. Through their son Charles Edward they are the great-grandparents of Carl XVI Gustav, the current King of Sweden. 👑 Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (7 April 1853 – 28 March 1884) was the eighth child & youngest son of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert. Leopold was later created Duke of Albany, Earl of Clarence, & Baron Arklow. On April 27, 1935, Hugh Hammond Bennett of Anson County became director of the Soil Conservation Service, a position he held until his retirement in 1952. “Big Hugh,” as he came to be known, grew up in the drainage basin of the Pee Dee River and became aware of the woeful effects of soil erosion at an early age. He is widely credited with selling the benefits of soil conservation to a dubious public. The solution to the nation’s agricultural problems, according to Bennett, was the preservation of the topsoil, accomplished using terracing, cover and strip cropping, contour plowing, grassed waterways, and crop rotation, among other methods. The “Dust Bowl” which devastated the American prairie lands in the mid-1930s increased the urgency of his work. Widely respected for his expertise, Bennett advised on projects in Alaska, Brazil, Cuba, and South Africa, among other places. For 50 years, Bennett worked with the federal Department of Agriculture, rising to the leadership role in the Soil Conservation Service. In his native Anson, he established the Brown Creek Soil Conservation District in 1937. It was the first organization of its kind in the nation. Today those who continue the work to preserve the soil honor Bennett as the “father of soil conservation.” #northcarolina #history #ncmarkers #historicalmarkers #roadsidehistory #historyonastick #thisdayinhistory

April 27, 1994. 30 years ago today. Five American presidents and their wives gather in Yorba Linda, California for the funeral of Former President Richard Nixon. Nixon, who died on April 22, requested that a state funeral not be held, but a ceremony at his birthplace instead. It was a rare occasion where several presidents were together in one location. This was also notable as the last major appearance of Former President Ronald Reagan, who would shortly be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Also present at the funeral services were the Nixon family, Former Vice President Spiro Agnew (who hadn’t spoken to Nixon since resigning as vice president), Former Vice President Dan Quayle, and G. Gordon Liddy. Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Senator Bob Dole delivered eulogies. President Bill Clinton delivered a eulogy. In his remarks, the president said: “For the past year, even in the final weeks of his life, he gave me his wise counsel, especially with regard to Russia. One thing in particular left a profound impression on me. Though this man was in his ninth decade, he had an incredibly sharp and vigorous and rigorous mind. “…may the day of judging President Nixon on anything less than his entire life and career come to a close. May we heed his call to maintain the will and the wisdom to build on America’s greatest gift, its freedom, to lead a world full of difficulty to the just and lasting peace he dreamed of.” #uspresidents #richardnixon #37thpresident #americanhistory #thisdayinhistory

Almost 12, 000 constitutional amendments have been proposed in Congress and most of them have died in committee. Representative Victor Berger of Wisconsin, the 1st Socialist member of the House, proposed one such amendment on April 27, 1911 – to abolish the U.S. Senate. 📰 Berger’s proposal read: “Whereas the Senate in particular has become an obstructive and useless body, a menace to the liberties of the people, and an obstacle to social growth. ... All legislative powers shall be vested in the House of Representatives. Its enactments, subject to referendum ... shall be the supreme law, and the president shall have no power to veto them, nor shall any court have the power to invalidate them.” 🤔 While Berger’s proposed amendment died in committee, seven weeks later, Congress began the process of passing the 17th Amendment to alter how Senators are elected. This had been under consideration long before Berger's proposed amendment. 📜 While the Constitution provided for direct election of House members by the people, it stated that Senators would be elected by state legislatures. This resulted in conflicts of interest and Senate seats remaining vacant for a long periods of time. Because of disagreements and stalemates, for example, Delaware was without representation in the Senate for two years in the late 1800s. 🤚 Many state legislators had already changed their procedures to allow direct election of Senators. And, on June 12, Senator Joseph Bristow of Kansas proposed a Senate resolution to amend the Constitution to require direct election of Senators. Following passage in both Houses of Congress, the 17th Amendment was ratified by the states on July 15, 1913.

Can't forget this day oooo. The judge is too good, he's humourous and very playful. When one of us asked him why he had smile on his and made his judgement seem like a play? He said " why should I keep a mean face when it's not my problem? I'm not the one that is being judged" and he later added " also I want everyone to feel comfortable". That's a very nice quality, with that I'm learning to add play in my life, in whatever I do. There's more to learn from this judge, honestly. #judge #thisdayinhistory #joy

However, they faced a 0-2 defeat, finalized by a ten-wicket loss in Barbados. Despite winning the toss and choosing to field, Pakistan struggled against the West Indies' strong batting lineup. Phil Simmons scored a quick 87 off 90 balls, and Desmond Haynes achieved his second consecutive century. Pakistan's only highlight was Basit Ali's unbeaten 92 in his second Test. A fallen team and a devastated nation united in grief – on this day in history, 27th April 1993, an aircraft carrying the Zambia national football team plunged into the Atlantic Ocean. Most members of the national team, widely regarded as one of the best in Africa, were en route to Senegal where they were set to play a World Cup qualifying against the Senegalese national team. 18 players lost their lives, as well as coaches, a journalist and flight crew. Captain Kalusha Bwalya was one of the few team members who was not on that ill-fated flight. The surviving team members, along with other stakeholders set about rebuilding a new team. Amazingly, this new team made it to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) the following year, narrowly losing out to Nigeria. In 2012 the national team won the AFCON, the nation was united and overjoyed in victory. It was a bittersweet time as the memories of the national team that lost their lives in 1993 still lingered. Today we remember the team we lost and the pride they brought the country. Their legacy endures. Heroes Stadium in Lusaka (pictured) is dedicated to the memory of our fallen heroes. #zambia #thisdayinhistory #afcon #africanfootball #zambianhistory #thisweekinhistory #zambianfootball #chipolopolo #thebeautifulgame

📅 27 April 2002: Shoaib Akhtar of Pakistan made history as the first bowler to exceed 100mph, clocking in at 100.04mph (161kph) in a one-day international against New Zealand in Lahore. His record-breaking speed was directed at batsman Craig McMillan. However, this record was not officially recognized by the ICC due to the lack of a standard measurement tool. Prior to this, the highest recorded speed was 99.8mph, achieved by Australia's Jeff Thomson in 1975, but this was not during an official match. 🇵🇰 📷 #Pakistan #History #OnThisDay #PakistanPolitics #PakistanHistory #Politics #Cricket #PakistanCricketTeam #Sports #ThisDayInHistory #pakistan_pics #historyfacts #historylovers #cricketupdates #pakistandiaries #historypodcast #PakistanCricketBoard #pakistanart #historyclass

On 26 April 1944, 2nd Lt. Donald J. Schaefer and his nine crew members departed the Thurleigh airfield on a mission to drop information leaflets over Brunswick, Germany. Shortly after the Boeing B-17 took off, it experienced an engine fire. The airplane crashed about a mile from the airfield. Donald Schaefer, Floyd Henry, Willard Transeth, Roy McKinney, Charles Weller, Sheldon Kinberg, John Simons, John Byred, and Ron Minter were killed. Only George Littlefield, the tail gunner, survived. At the time of the crash, Littlefield was operating the Aldis lamp to warn other aircraft in the area of their position. Fortunately for Littlefield, this was the only part of the plane that was not consumed by the fire. He made a full recovery from his injuries. Littlefield died in 2007. Mary Laws, who bought the field in 1993, became curious about the plot of land where her children discovered pieces of metal and then a live bullet. She had wondered about the indentation in the ground, but the findings caused her to investigate the historical record. She learned the site had been the scene of a horrific crash, and the crew, except one individual, had perished. After conducting significant research relative to the event, Mary became determined to honor the crew. She was instrumental in raising funds necessary to create a lasting memorial to those who died and the single survivor of the crash. Over the past 30 years, Mary has continued to pick up small pieces of the plane, and she frequently contemplated the life and death of each member of the Donald Schaefer crew. In August 2022, a small contingent of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association traveled to Thurleigh to take part in a ceremony denoting the 80th anniversary of the "friendly invasion" by the USAAF. Among the group were three descendants of crew member Floyd Henry, who participated in the service for the dedication and unveiling of the memorial. After a short church service of remembrance at St. Mary’s Church in Bletsoe, the American travelers and Bletsoe villagers moved to the churchyard where George Curtin, Mary Devine, and Michael Collins honored their uncle by unveiling the commemorative memorial.

The Death of John Wilkes Booth - Part 2 : Using straw and brush, Union soldiers set the barn on fire. The soldiers were able to see Booth moving around inside the burning barn holding his carbine and crutch, his left leg being broken… : What happened next is the subject of great debate, both in the immediate aftermath and still after more than 150 years later... Sgt. “Boston” Corbett of the 16th New York Cavalry shot John Wilkes Booth through the back of the head despite orders from the War Department demanding Booth be captured alive... Corbett claimed Booth leveled his rifle at him and that he acted in self-defense. : Booth’s initially still alive, but grievously and mortally wounded, had his body then dragged out of the burning barn and for a short time placed on the grass near a locust tree. Soon, though, the Presidential assassin was moved to the front porch of the Garrett home. : After being attended to by Local physician, Dr. Charles Urquhart, Jr., it was determined that the wound which had punctured Booth’s spinal cord had left him paralyzed and was indeed fatal. All that remained was to wait out the final hours of the life of John Wilkes Booth. : Sometime around 7:00 A.M. on April 26, 1865, Booth was shown his limp hands by Dr. Urquhart, he looked at them and after a moment moaned, “Useless! Useless!” John Wilkes Booth died shorty after. : #HistoryThingswithPat #OTD #OnThisDay #ThisDayInHistory #OnTHisDayInHistory #HappenedToday #CivilWar #CivilWarHistory #HtwP #JohnWIlkesBooth #AbrahamLincoln #BoothKilled #HeroldCaptured #LincolnAssassination #Manhunt #HistoryLesson #History #UShistory #PresidentLincoln

On this date in 1945, Bro. Michael Schleich, SM passed away. Bro. Schleich was the Inspector General of the Society of Mary's General Administration from 1909-1945 and was a major proponent of Marianist education. He especially believed that Marianist elementary schools were a great avenue for inspiring vocations. The position of "Inspector General" was created at the Society of Mary's General Chapter of 1858 so that the Provincial could focus on spirituality while another member of the Provincial Council focused on education. This role eventually morphed into what is now referred to as the "Assistant of Education." #Marianist #MarianistFamily #OnThisDay #ThisDayInHistory #OnThisDate #ThisDateInHistory #MarianistHistory

#onthisday 26 April 1923 ⛪ The wedding of Prince Albert, Duke of York, & Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon took place on 26 April 1923 at Westminster Abbey. The couple were later known as King George VI & Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The Wedding dress; 👰 Elizabeth's wedding dress was made from deep ivory chiffon moire, embroidered with pearls & a silver thread. It was intended to match the traditional Flanders lace provided for the train by Queen Mary. Elizabeth's dress, which was in the fashion of the early 1920s, was designed by Madame Handley-Seymour, dressmaker to Queen Mary. Its design was reportedly based on a dress created by Jeanne Lanvin & was "suggestive of a medieval Italian gown". Elizabeth chose not to wear a tiara, & instead a chaplet of leaves secured the veil. A strip of Brussels lace, inserted in the dress, was a Strathmore family heirloom. A female ancestor of the bride wore it to a grand ball for "Bonnie Prince Charlie", Charles Edward Stuart. The silver leaf girdle had a trail of spring green tulle, trailing to the ground; silver & rose thistle fastened it. According to an era news article: "In the trimming the bride has defied all old superstitions about the unluckiness of green." Elizabeth wore "an orange blossom wreath", which featured "white roses of York". The dress had two trains: "one fastened at the hips, the other floating from the shoulders". Unlike more recent dresses, details of this one were publicly revealed in advance of the wedding day. However, the dress was worked on until the last possible opportunity: the day before the wedding, Elizabeth divided her time between the wedding rehearsal & her dressmakers. ______ #GeorgeVI #KingGeorgeVI #Theking #TheQueen #kingandqueen #QueenElizabeth #Queenmother #Queenmum #LadyElizabeth #princealbert #dukeofyork #duchessofyork #DukeandDuchess #WestminsterAbbey #HouseofWindsor #RoyalFamily #BritishMonarchy #Monarchy #RoyalHistory #Royalty #BowesLyon #RoyalWedding #Wedding #weddingdayphotos #weddingphotography #vintagephotography #OnThisDayInHistory #thisdayinhistory #d26apr

April 26th, 1607, marks the day when colonists from the Virginia Company made their first landing at Cape Henry, on the east coast of what is now Virginia. This was part of the early English colonization of North America. The colonists' journey was challenging, but their arrival laid the foundation for the establishment of the Jamestown colony, which would become one of the first successful English settlements in America. #funfacstbook #Funfactsforkids #dailyfunfacts #thisdayinhistory #virginiastate

Our beloved Lucille Ball…Today marks 35 years since Lucille Ball passed away on April 26, 1989 due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm following surgery. Fans still remember hearing on the news or radio words they’ll never forget: “Lucille Ball has died.” I’ve heard stories where people pulled over to the side of road when they heard it on the car radio so they could cry. To many, it seemed like she would always be here with us. She was like a family member or a best friend you could rely on. You could turn on the TV and she would be there to make you laugh. She was a shining light in our world. . But she’s still with us. Her spark is still here. Her legacy lives on. It will always live on. It’s living on today — 35 years later. As long as people are watching “I Love Lucy,” “The Lucy Show,” “Here’s Lucy,” or her movies, Lucy will never leave us. She still makes us laugh. Let’s continue to cherish her memory — not just today, but every day that follows. . I’m very, very thankful to live in a world that also gave us Lucille Ball. She was a beautiful gift, a beautiful talent, and a beautiful woman. We love Lucy, always and forever. ❤️ • • • #lucilleball #classic #vintage #comedy #comedians #comedylegend #iconic #iconicwomen #powerfulwomen #classicphoto #classicphotography #vintagephotography #classicstars #vintagestars #oldhollywood #oldhollywoodglamour #vintagefashion #inrememberance #remembrance #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #1940s #1950s #1960s #icons #inlovingmemory #inmemoriam #legacy #tribute #tributepost

#StudențiStagiariCSEA 📸: The Atlantic

April 26, 1968⠀ Pfc. Lee distinguished himself near the city of Phu Bai in the province of Thua Thien. Pfc. Lee was serving as the radio telephone operator with the 3d Platoon, Company B. ⠀ ⠀ As lead element for the company, the 3d Platoon received intense surprise hostile fire from a force of North Vietnamese Army regulars in well-concealed bunkers. With 50 percent casualties, the platoon maneuvered to a position of cover to treat their wounded and reorganize, while Pfc. Lee moved through the heavy enemy fire giving lifesaving first aid to his wounded comrades. During the subsequent assault on the enemy defensive positions, Pfc. Lee continuously kept close radio contact with the company commander, relaying precise and understandable orders to his platoon leader. ⠀ ⠀ While advancing with the front rank toward the objective, Pfc. Lee observed four North Vietnamese soldiers with automatic weapons and a rocket launcher lying in wait for the lead element of the platoon. As the element moved forward, unaware of the concealed danger, Pfc. Lee immediately and with utter disregard for his own personal safety, passed his radio to another soldier and charged through the murderous fire. Without hesitation he continued his assault, overrunning the enemy position, killing all occupants, and capturing four automatic weapons and a rocket launcher. ⠀ ⠀ Pfc. Lee continued his one-man assault on the second position through a heavy barrage of enemy automatic-weapons fire. Grievously wounded, he continued to press the attack, crawling forward into a firing position and delivering accurate covering fire to enable his platoon to maneuver and destroy the position. Not until the position was overrun did Pfc. Lee falter in his steady volume of fire and succumb to his wounds. Pfc. Lee's heroic actions saved the lives of the lead element and were instrumental in the destruction of the key position of the enemy defense.⠀ ⠀ Pfc Milton Lee had just turned 19 years old⠀ ⠀ ⠀ https://www.cmohs.org/recipients/milton-a-lee

April 26 1967⠀ Leading a three-plane group of aircraft in support of a coordinated strike against two thermal powerplants in Haiphong, North Vietnam, Capt. Estocin provided continuous warnings to the strike group leaders of the surface-to-air missile (SAM) threats, and personally neutralized three SAM sites. ⠀ ⠀ Although his aircraft was severely damaged by an exploding missile, he reentered the target area and relentlessly prosecuted a SHRIKE attack in the face of intense antiaircraft fire. With less than five minutes of fuel remaining he departed the target area and commenced in-flight refueling which continued for over 100 miles. Three miles aft of the Ticonderoga, and without enough fuel for a second approach, he disengaged from the tanker and executed a precise approach to a fiery arrested landing. ⠀ ⠀ In support of a coordinated strike against the vital fuel facilities in Haiphong, he led an attack on a threatening SAM site, during which his aircraft was seriously damaged by an exploding SAM, nevertheless, he regained control of his burning aircraft and courageously launched his SHRIKE missiles before departing the area.⠀ ⠀ https://www.cmohs.org/recipients/michael-j-estocin
