Omaha packed a punch 👊 Got there Friday afternoon just in time to avoid and find a safe place from the tornadoes (one touched down about quarter mile from us) and more popped up all over the place. The next morning brought a cool yet humid start to the half marathon. First loop this ND gal struggled to breathe with all the humidity. Second loop humidity lessened just in time for the sun to come out more and heat things up 🥵 It was a hard trail half for me and had about 1,300 feet of elevation gain...wasn't expecting that 😳😅 Coming away with a 12 place finish overall for a big local race so can't complain! Take away is that summer heat training and hills are gonna be my besties for this summer! Then spent the afternoon with friends at the Omaha Zoo! April 26th is International Flamingo Day! Designated in 2020, this young holiday celebrates this iconic waterbird that we’re all familiar with. The goal is to create awareness of the birds’ need for protection and habitat conservation in their native lands. April 26th was chosen as it is the birthdate of John James Audubon, noted American painter and ornithologist. Flamingos were a frequent subject of Audubon’s paintings and studies. When you hear the word flamingo, you automatically picture a large pink wading bird with a gracefully curved neck and long stilt-like legs. While this generalized picture does fit, did you know there are actually distinct SIX species of flamingo in the world? American (Caribbean), Andean, Chilean, Greater, Lesser, and Puna (Jones). The flamingo’s name is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word flamengo, meaning flame-colored. You may have heard that a flamingo is pink because of what it eats, but it’s a little more complicated than that. They dine on types of algae, insects, shrimp and other crustaceans—many of these organisms contain beta carotene, a red-orange pigment. During the digestive process, the flamingo absorbs these pigments into their liver, which in turn are deposited into their skin and feathers, essentially turning the flamingo pink. If you look at flamingo flocks—known as “flamboyances”—in different parts of the world, they will be different shades of pink because the beta carotene content and shade of their food differs. Some birds appear light pink, greyish pink, orange, red, even mostly white. It all comes down to what type of food is available in their habitat. Flamingo chicks are greyish white when they first hatch, and will turn pink as the beta carotene of their diet builds up over their first few years of life.
