My next sighting was this striking black spiny-tailed iguana, just chilling out on the rocks along the footpath. About 1.5m in length he certainly didn't seem at all bothered about everyone's presence! With that impressive long spiny tail I'm sure he can easily defend himself 😂 Males have a distinctively more pronounced crest of spines.

“Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana” - 9”x12” watercolor on paper Wrapping up this trend of rainforest animals I’ve painted recently, we have the humble black spiny-tailed iguana. We saw them everywhere in Belize, at the frequency that I’d been used to seeing like tree squirrels, except these guys were as long as I was tall (I was only 9-10yrs old at the time). So just like really big, usually harmless, squirrels. It was always a little scary when one would fall out of a tree. They’re good climbers but sometimes clumsy (the is separate from the phenomenon where iguanas fall from trees because they get cold-stunned in cooler temps). Aside from that, they are gorgeous! The iguana in my reference photo was shedding its skin and it’s wild how colorful their fresh skin is after they’re done molting. Every time the intruding male approached too close, the resident male who lives under the sidewalk would chase him off at high speed. They are considered the world’s fastest lizard by the Guinness Book of World Records who lists the maximum speed at 21.5 mph. Males during breeding season often develop a slight orange color around their head with highlights of blue and peach in their #jowls (sagging skin below the jawline). At Manuel Antonio visit the National Park. It is the smallest in Costa Rica and the most visited. Traveling Costa Rica in November has its advantages. While it is the month with the most unpredictable weather, it’s got less tourists and Manuel Antonio was not as crowded as expected. It’s your choice taking a guided tour or walk on your own. I recommend the guided tour. The guides spot much more animals and provide great, fun information. Here I learned the top survival rule for Costa Rica: ‚if it’s small and colorful, don’t touch it, don’t eat it‘ 😉 The landscape is fantastic as are the animals. Here are two of my favorites, an iguana and a sloth. If you are interested in more animal pictures have a look at the reel I post simultaneously. Some tips for your visit. Have it booked in advance by the hotel you stay in. There is no parking available at the park. For a guided tour, chose the SINAC guides inside the park. Don’t take any food with you. It will be stolen by the coatis and monkeys in the park and it is bad for them. I got a bowl of fruit at the park. I have witnessed other visitors being stolen theirs by a monkey. They and the coatis are the park mafia 😆They collaborate to steal your stuff. Bring swimming gear, there are some great beaches. Don’t leave your stuff unattended, otherwise the monkeys and coatis will have an intimate look at it and you might not recover it. You need your ID to purchase tickets online. This is "Stumpy" one of the Wish Willies (Spiny-tailed Iguanas) that lives at the Station (you can't see it in the photo, but he is missing much of his tail, thus the name). We aren't sure if he is cruising for mates or has been displaced from his territory, but for the last week, he has been wandering around the Station showing up in all sorts of places. Today, we opened the door to find him guarding the steps. We saw a few black spiny-tailed iguanas within Manuel Antonio National Park during our group walk.
There was a black spiny-tailed iguana hanging out just outside our room at the hotel in Manuel Antonio.
Black Spiny-tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura similis). Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. Spiny-tailed iguanas are big, prehistoric-looking lizards. Male C. similis can grow to over 4 ft (total length) and are highly territorial. If a resident male feels that his territory is being encroached upon, he may perform a ritualized head-bobbing display directed at the intruder (whether that intruder is another iguana or just a peaceful photographer apparently doesn’t matter too much). These iguanas are omnivores, but their diets shift over the course of their lives. Juveniles tend to eat mostly arthropods, whereas adults consume mostly leaves, buds, and fruits. Notably, they eat the fruit of the manchineel tree (Hippomane mancinella), which is poisonous to most other animals. One of these “beach apples” is visible in the foreground of this image, just left of center. The iguana pictured here is an adult male with some nice salmon and blue coloration.
