You won't believe what I found in our garden today! I stumbled upon a magnificent Oriental garden lizard 🦎 basking in the sun and showing off its stunning colors. It was such an incredible sight to see this little guy up close. •The Oriental garden lizard (Calotes versicolor) is a spiny lizard that can grow up to 37 cm long, with a snout to tail base of up to 10 cm. It has a large head and robust body that are higher than they are wide, with lateral body scales that point backwards and upwards. Adults have a crest that runs from behind the eyes to the back. It is found widely distributed in Indo-Malaya, and has also been introduced in many other parts of the world. The Oriental garden lizard is a solitary, diurnal lizard that spends most of its time in low shrubs and tree trunks. It can often be seen basking in the sun on a hot, sunny day. It is a carnivore that eats mainly insects, such as crickets, grasshoppers, and ants. It also eats small vertebrates, including rodents and other lizards. They may not be able to fly or breathe fire, but there's still a fearless dragon inside them. 🐉🦎 The Oriental garden lizard (Calotes versicolor) is an agamid lizard found widely distributed in Indo-Malaya. These lizards are known for their ability to change color. The pictures shown above were taken during their breeding season. As you can see, the male's neck region and the lines around its eyes turns crimson colour, while its throat turns black (pictures 1 & 3). Sometimes its head completely changes to crimson colour. This coloration indicates aggression, increasing the likelihood of being attacked if approached. Due to their aggressive behavior and crimson coloration, there has been a misconception that they are bloodsuckers. But in reality they are primarily insectivores, feeding on insects and small invertebrates. Female oriental garden lizards ( pictures 2 & 4 ) typically do not undergo a drastic change in color like males during breeding season. They are ambush predators, i.e., their hunting strategy involves sitting and waiting on a perch, often a low branch or rock, scanning the ground for prey.
