Through acrylic paintings, she explores intergenerational histories and recurring human experiences that connect people through time and space. ⁣ ⁣ It's the last day to see this piece in person and meet the artist! 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 by Iza Thomas showcases a gorgeous, detailed dress on a mannequin. 👗⁣ ⁣ The dress' design shows scenes of women at work in a blue, delftware-like pattern. If viewers look too hastily, the women blend into the dress like beautiful ornamental designs. Thomas highlights the importance of these (often overlooked) women and their roles in society by bringing them to the foreground of the painting in magnified frames. Set against a summery orange backdrop, Thomas addresses the complex duality of women while maintaining a sense of softly traditional feminine beauty throughout her paintings. 🖌⁣ ⁣ You can meet this artist in person by joining us at tomorrow's closing reception from 4-6 pm! 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 (from the series 𝘈𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘢) by ⁣ Atiya Dorsey features four women collaged together in an intimate group huddle. Their eyes are purposefully mismatched from their original photos, connecting the figures through time and space. The mixture of black and white photos with color photos inspires us to consider similarities between modern life and the past, as well as what it means to be a Black woman. 💐⁣ ⁣ Dorsey's series 𝘈𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘢 is a recreation of old family photographs that center the women in her family on her mom’s side. The images represent her longing for a time she has never known, but that she has experienced vis-a-vis embodied knowledge and memory. Ultimately, the series aims to honor the Black women who raised her and the southern Black aesthetics that helped shape her childhood. ✨⁣ ⁣ To view this stunning collage, visit us in person before the exhibit 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯│𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵 ends on Saturday (curated by Halley Sun Stubis). Maritime history lesson! 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘢𝘵 𝘋𝘢𝘸𝘯, 𝘖𝘹𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 by Thierry Guillemin features the Red Pearl, a 27-foot sailing ship that gained recognition in the world of marine vessels, thanks to her owner, Allen Cady. Cady is a ship craftsman who built the "Red Pearl" and her sister ship “New Moon” based on the drawings of esteemed naval architect Tom Gilmer. New Moon was for Tom and Red Pearl for Tom's good friend Bill Beasman. ⚓⁣ ⁣ Tom Gilmer is known as the architect of the Pride of Baltimore, designed to represent Baltimore as a ship used for transporting goods. Gilmer later designed Pride of Baltimore II, as well, after the original sunk in 1986. 🚢⁣ ⁣ Guillemin’s 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭 𝘢𝘵 𝘋𝘢𝘸𝘯, 𝘖𝘹𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘥 evokes a sense of tranquility and stillness at first glance, and upon learning the historical significance of the ship pictured, we hope viewers will ponder the piece even further! 💭⁣ ⁣ Thierry is currently showing 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘢𝘸𝘯 exhibit here at Studio Gallery, which is on display until April 20th. 𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘞𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 by Iza Thomas features a lonely mannequin standing by an old-fashioned, cream-colored telephone. A romantic arch twists overhead, and subdued rainbow-hued bubbles and dark green vines decorate the canvas around the form. 🫧⁣ ⁣ Thomas' paintings evoke a sense of magic, mystery, and nostalgia. Her exhibit "𝘛𝘌𝘈𝘙𝘚 𝘌𝘕𝘖𝘜𝘎𝘏 𝘛𝘖 𝘋𝘙𝘖𝘞𝘕 𝘔𝘌 𝘉𝘜𝘛 𝘐 𝘚𝘞𝘐𝘔" (on view at Studio Gallery until April 20th, curated by Gaby Mizes) explores the duality and strength of women. Her husband, Suresh Thomas, created poetry to accompany each thoughtful painting. Not yet, but we can begin to engage ourselves with the life of nature through Jo Levine’s show 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴. 🌸⁣ ⁣ As the cherry blossoms begin to bloom here in D.C. after a long winter, one is reminded of the persistence of life, with Levine’s 𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘭, shown above, highlighting this theme. Jona Monet is a purpose-driven artist based in Washington, DC. She uses her talents for advocacy, working with clients such as Essence Festival, BET+, Medicaid, and Afro Tech. Her work spans creative direction, graphic design, murals, and community activism, giving voice to those who may not have one. She is an alumnus of Towson University and the 202 Creates Cohort and has contributed to campaigns for WMATA Metro, Beretta USA, and the Department of Transportation. Jona’s work is rich with story and symbolism. The more you observe the work, the more you notice and interact with it. Vibrant shades of paint are layered on top of ink black night. There are many details to see an uncover- visual icons of African-culture, lush background, faces both covered and uncovered. Here is an excerpt of Chelsea's bio from her webpage. Chelsea Ritter-Soronen is a multi-disciplinary visual artist, small business owner and professional public arts consultant. She is the Owner and Principal Artist of Chalk Riot, an all-women mural production house specializing in artwork on the ground, established in 2013. Outside of her work at Chalk Riot, her personal murals illustrate vibrant floral stories of human growth, often including plants with surreal and personified elements. Formally trained by scenic artists and informally trained by graffiti artists, Chelsea's murals often combine trompe l'oeil elements with modern playful twists. As an organizer and artist, Chelsea is committed to art as a glue that unites forces of positive social change. Chelseas's work at first glance is cool & light with pastels & floral themes. Look closer and there is a potential for deeper, more serious conversations about the environment, our relationships with others, and even our personal choices. We're lucky to have her work for this exhibit, but also honored to be one of the buildings in DC that have a mural designed and painted by this talented artist. Chelsea's mural on our south facing side of the building is altogether celebratory, whimsical, and personal.
