Have a client that’s got an anxiety disorder, bigger than I can describe. I helped him break through today, first we took a walk and picked flowers. Then we reproached the classroom. I saw him totally melt into the creative space. It was incredible to watch. He went from destructive stimming and saying “what next” every 5 seconds to really being in the present moment, expressing himself, and smiling. A letter for my beautiful Mother: You, who from the beginning of my life was my closest companion and friend. You, took care of me and raised me in love and kindness. You who whenever I had any kind of pain I could find refuge in your arms and seek out your help. The nights that I was ill, you would stay by my side in concern and worry until night became day. Oh you who for me was ready to sacrifice your life, who heaven lies beneath your feet. In getting me where I am today, it was you who endured pain and hardship. Who struggled and endeavored for me in your life. You, my mother. Despite knowing I could never repay the countless sacrifices you made for me, On mother's day, I hope my gratitude and recognition that I am eternally indebted to you, will put a smile on your face. I congratulate you and all mothers on this day. And I hope one day, I can return a fraction of the kindness and sacrifices that you've made for me. If I had the means to, I would throw the entire world at your feet. Payman, 13 years old. Payman wrote this letter a few days prior to his life-altering car accident for mother's day. His mother found the letter after the accident in his backpack. Even though Payman cannot write letters like these anymore, the same love, gratitude, and desire to help his mother are seen both in his interactions with her and in the painting he draws of her. After Payman's accident, he was left with limited ability to verbally communicate with others. But if you look at his creations, you can tell that Payman shares his thoughts, feelings, perspectives and view of the world visually. There's something so emotionally provoking about his latest piece that makes you want to dissect what the rainbow colored man is thinking about, what experiences he's had in his life, what sadness his soul has seen. I think one of the most beautiful parts of Paymans artwork is that it's not a mirroring of what we see around us. The playful drawings, paintings, and sculptures in this group exhibition share an interest in abstract and irregular shapes. In places, they seem plump, squishy, jello-like, and organic. In others, the artists offer harder-edged and jewel-like chunks. Simultaneously mysterious and joyful, the forms suggest familiar images without resolving into solid representation. Each work is a bold, animated presence inviting the viewer’s own associations and sensory responses. Art Enables is an art gallery and vocational arts program dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with #disabilities to make, market, and earn income from their original and compelling artwork. Seventy percent (70%) of an artwork purchase price goes directly to the artists, and the remaining 30% goes toward studio supplies, framing costs, and other needed art materials. Established in 2001, Art Enables believes that artists with disabilities are vital to a robust arts landscape and should be afforded the opportunity to pursue art as a vocation and career. Art Enables works with artists who experience a broad range of developmental and cognitive disabilities and mental health challenges, including autism, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, among others. Art Enables' artists are largely self-taught and tell powerful stories through their artwork.
