The walls of @unionmarketdc are a canvas for many artists, including DC native @artgillumo. You'll find his signature artwork all over the area, some in plain sight, others hidden. A formerly blank stretch of space near Fifth and Neal Streets NE has been turned into a mini street gallery where you'll find a vibrant collection of his artwork. But beyond the walls of @noma.bid, his art has a deeper meaning. They brought all the smiles and sweet laughs… and a few tears, too. Mama really wanted her to have the best day and I was glad I could help support them both. Spanning more than a century, "Unknown Solider" has a lot of moving parts, but is a romantic mystery at its core. Primarily a sentimental journey, it deals with memory, remembrance, legacy, and the mess of inheritance–genes, momentos, and ghosts. On stage now at @arenastage, the story is built around the quest to identify the amnesiac World War I veteran of its title, and examines the question whether it's possible to fully know other people — in the present as well as in the past, and how well we even know ourselves. In the background of the set, an illuminated clock with no hands is a tip off that time is fluid in this story that is set in 1918-1920, 1973, 2003, and 2013. There are a lot of narrative points to follow, but the musical score helps connect the dots and fill in blanks that would otherwise have stretched the running time. The cast sings beautifully, especially Kerstin Anderson, who plays the grandmother character as a young adult in 1918-20. "Unknown Soldier" is a beautifully performed and staged show with some lovely moments and a thought-provoking premise. But it leaves the central mystery frustratingly unsolved. But perhaps that's the point. Thinking about good fortunes, for Helene’s doljabi — where different items are placed in front of them and the one they pick foretells the life they’ll live — she chose the calligraphy brush which means the life of a scholar! It came from a time first birthdays were a community wide celebration because most children didn’t make it to one year and when they did it was the thought they’d survive their lifetime. Everyone came together to share in the joy of abundance when everything was scarce. It wasn’t so much a place of wanting to predict what someone would become but more collective relief and collective permission to dream a future for them/with them at all! So in that spirit I invite everyone to join us on Friday, May 3 for the opening night of Xena Ni’s Good Fortunes at the Heurich House. AND it is opening night of the annual Asia North exhibition curated by Nerissa Paglinauan and Ryan Jafar Artes, where I have a few of my pieces in the show!! Coming back to Bmore after all this time is a wonderful and gentle reminder that our journey is not linear, but whole. This town gave me my start and I will forever cherish the memories it holds for that time in my life.
