1982 Citroën BX USA — [ 🇫🇷 > en commentaire ] — 🇬🇧 The American market! A sweet dream that PSA has been cherishing for a long time and that it finally intends to realize with the support of Chrysler. In addition to the takeover of the European subsidiary by the French group, PSA CEO Jean-Paul Parayre and his counterpart at Chrysler, John Riccardo, have signed several cooperation agreements. First financial, then commercial, and finally, one hopes, industrial. By combining their holdings and lending $100 million to help the third-largest American carmaker recover, PSA intends to gain a foothold in the United States and distribute its models through the Chrysler dealership network, while waiting to go further with the launch of a joint-venture model. It was in this context that Citroën began working on a BX USA at the end of 1979. This was a very special version since a conventional (note the mention "mécanique") suspension replaces the hydraulic one with the only purpose of obtaining a fixed height of bumper, imposed by the legislator. Among the other particularities, one will note the double headlamps, the 5-mph bumpers, a specific exterior mirror, the famous smoked polycarbonate rear quarter windows, and taillights that already suggest those of the 1989 facelift. 1982 Citroën BX 1975-1977 Projet XA — [ 🇫🇷 > en commentaire ] — 🇬🇧 You certainly all know the XB project started in 1977. But do you know its predecessor called XA? Started in December 1975, the XA borrows all its mechanics from the GS, which it has to replace partially. According to our pal Gilles Colboc, the specifications indicate that this model should be inserted between the GS and the CX with a hatchback body (with here a very initial sketch by Régis Gromik), and a station wagon. Still according to Gilles, its length must be increased to 4.25 m (4.40 for the SW), 13 cm longer than the GS, aligning itself with the newcomer Chrysler Alpine/1307. Why was the XA project abandoned? Since the merger, PSA chairman, François Gautier, placed a trusted member of the Sochaux family at the head of Citroën in December 1974: Georges Taylor. But Taylor, who had been seduced by Citroën's philosophy, quickly tried to preserve its specific culture and its spirit of independence. However, this first project, which should have been christened GX, does not seem to share common parts with the mother brand. In a word: no economy of scale. If Georges Taylor's strategic orientations are never questioned by François Gautier, that won't be the case with his successor Jean-Paul Parayre. The latter arrived in May 1977, and the new PSA top dog wants to speed up the merger, rationalize costs and reposition Peugeot and Citroën. Thus, in the weeks that followed, the XA project was abandoned after two years of development in favor of the XB, now equipped with the new engine dubbed XU. In the wake of the new specifications, the station wagon was dropped. Sculptor Henri Ernest Parayre enjoyed a close friendship with designer and architect, André Arbus, and the two collaborated on numerous projects.
