Sometimes it’s the detours that lead you to the nicest places. I originally wanted to visit the Bois de Boulogne today for some book research (read: picnic), but I somehow ended up in the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil instead. I saw a garden gate, I went in, it turned out to be the wrong one… But I did have my picnic, saw some beautiful greenhouses-think miniature Kew Gardens- and got called stylish by a French guy. Life goals! And I achieved another life goal today: after queuing for a very back-achy hour and a half, I got a Benjamin Lacombe autograph AND a drawing. I’ve loved his work for ages and I missed him at the Frankfurt Book Fair a few years ago, so this was a true highlight. He is genuinely the loveliest guy ever and very patiently made conversation with me despite my pidgin French. Also a shout-out to the bookseller who was rooting for me to get an autograph the entire time (I was last in the queue). You think this is a church? It isn’t! This might be the coolest library I have seen so far-which is ironic because it belongs to an engineering college. But it was so beautiful it was definitely worth getting up early for. After that, I went back to the book festival and had a decidedly less fun time than yesterday. It was super full, I couldn’t even get into two of the panels and everywhere was so noisy I couldn’t even hear myself think. I did, however, discover a new author life goal for myself: have your publisher like you enough that they offer you a hundred-euro bottle of champagne during your panel. I wouldn’t even drink it, but it’s the principle of the thing (but then, David Foenkinos is a genius, so he deserves it). I decided I’d had enough of the festival and went off to enjoy the sunshine and some ice cream from Une Glace à Paris in the Marais. And then I spent the rest of the evening chilling in the gardens of the National Archives. I know this is super kitschy, but look at the beautiful sunset! I enjoyed it from the tip of the Île Saint-Louis, surrounded by lots of slightly inebriated Parisians (the guy next to me was recounting his amorous exploits in graphic detail). It was so lovely to get some sun for once, especially after being inside a dark exhibition hall all day for the Paris book festival. I listened to some hyper-interesting panels, as the French would say, on anything from writing for teens to WW2 novels, why the French are so prone to revolt (it was so boring I left early, so that question remains unanswered), female virginity and finally, writing romance. Thankfully, I can’t understand most of the books, so apart from a ridiculously overpriced sandwich and a poster, I wasn’t tempted to buy anything. And on my way home, I had another encounter with a kind stranger. A shout-out to Louise, who not only rescued me from a very insistent scam artist, but also made sure I got on the right Metro. Two of my favourite things in one picture: cherry blossom and the coolest bookshop in Paris (yes, I’m aware it’s a tourist trap, but let me love it, okay?) I didn’t actually go in today as I’d already spent enough money on food- I tried my first Opéra today, sitting on the steps of the actual Opéra. It’s basically like the cake version of tiramisu. Apart from that, I spent today writing at the BNF and then getting some fresh air on the banks of the Seine. Gotta enjoy it before the quays are entirely flooded! And there’s something about Paris in the evening light that no other city has. Let me think of a suitably poetic description and get back to you… And to conclude this post, a list of five more or less weird things that have happened to me over the past 24 hours: 1) At the library event last night, I got asked twice if I was the author (I was standing by the books table, so it was an honest mistake). I replied “I wish, but no”. 2) At the BNF today, someone asked me to help them find the economics section. Apparently, I look like a librarian too. 3) The waitress in the café where I had lunch told me my perfume was so nice she could smell it all over the restaurant. At least, I think that’s what she said. She could also have said I was really sweaty. 4) A guy on the Métro asked if he could take a picture of my tattoo as inspiration for his own. 5) I was sitting in the park when a man asked me if I was a Sorbonne student because I looked like someone in his French class. We slept super late this morning because last night, we were at a light show in Saint-Eustache. It started with very shouty improv theater (full of Guillotine jokes because it’s France) and we were skeptical to say the least. But the actual show was amazing! There are few things more beautiful than a Gothic cathedral lit up to look like the night sky. Anyway, back to today, which involved more pastries, some very nice tapas and because one must add some culture to one’s food, we went to the Chateau de Vincennes. I’d totally forgotten how big it was. Sone highlights: 19th-century prisoner graffiti, the second ugliest tomb I have ever seen and a pretty cool exhibition on female Resistance fighters in WW2. Now I finally know who all these Metro stations are named after! They’ve already started prepping for the Olympics! In the three days I’ve been gone, lots of Metro station names have been turned into sports puns. Apart from Victor Judo- at which I couldn’t help imagining the great man himself tackling literary critics to the ground- I also saw Pigoalball in Pigalle. I can’t wait to see more of them over the next few days as I adjust to being back in Paris. It’s been a bumpy first day… one jammed suitcase, an art book hitting me in the face and giving me a nosebleed (yes, I do appreciate the subtle irony of death by book, but it’ll be funnier once my face stops hurting) and some pretty grim weather seemed to be conspiring against me. I don’t particularly like the Galeries Lafayette-too many people and too much luxury I’ll never be able to afford, plus everywhere smells of perfume- but they do have a beautiful dome. Still, I could have thought of more fun things than shopping for Easter presents on Good Friday when everyone has time off. Next, we did another posh shopping centre, the BHV in the Marais (not to be confused with HMV!) And as a close off to the beginning of the Easter weekend, we went to the Orangerie to see Monet’s Water Lilies. Beautiful as ever, but again, I don’t get why people are incapable of putting their phones down for ten minutes while looking at a painting. Claude would not have approved! I still love the Musée d’Orsay (and its amazing clock) every time I go. Today, we saw a special exhibition to celebrate 150 years of Impressionism. Beautiful paintings, but you could hardly see them because of all the people taking pictures. At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old lady, why do people do that? Have we really lost the ability to just look at something without immediately needing to document it? *rant over* Apart from that, we visited a lovely café/flower shop (Cordelia on Rue du Bac. Super expensive, but worth it), replaced the unicorn mug from Musée de Cluny that mysteriously vanished in my last move and had the best ramen I’ve ever eaten in Passage de Choiseul. You’ve probably seen this one in a million Paris guidebooks-the Fontaine des Médicis in the Jardin du Luxembourg. I have to admit it would have looked nicer with some water in it! But I still spent a delightful hour in the gardens reading, people-watching and eating something called a tournicoti canelle, which is basically a cinnamon bun, but better because it’s French. Apart from that, I got lost in another cemetery, the Montmartre one this time. I even saw some of the street cats, but sadly they didn’t want to be petted. I also spent way too much money on face cream (but hey, it’s not my fault my skin is too sensitive for anything except the posh stuff). And I saw the Moulin Rouge from the outside. I don’t think the Centre Pompidou needs any introduction! I was supposed to go see a film there with some friends, but because there was a mix-up with the timings, we missed the whole thing. So instead we first enjoyed the gorgeous view from the top level and then ended up in a Spanish club with terrible music where they charged me nine euros for what was essentially fruit juice. And they had a separate smoking room in the basement which looked like a torture chamber. An interesting turn of events, for sure. Apart from that, I spent some research time at the BNF, which is still the most beautiful place I have ever studied in (Google ‘Salle Ovale’ and you’ll see what I mean). I also checked out my local library, which is a lot less posh, but surprisingly well-stocked. And I learned the French word for “tape measure”, which is another one of those essential things they don’t teach you at school. Not a bad view for a lunch break, right? This is on the tip of Île Saint-Louis where I enjoyed a well-deserved pain au chocolat after a research session at the Bibliothéque de l’Hôtel de Ville. A beautiful reading room, but the security measures are super complicated. And I felt so sorry for the poor librarians because I made them search for the books I’d reserved for an hour. But they found them in the end and were incredibly lovely during the whole palaver. Power to the librarians! Apart from that, I discovered a new favourite park: Square de la Tour Saint-Jacques, which has a massive Gothic church tower in the middle of it. As you do. And I soaked up some rare sun before the weather changes again. I thought I’d do some sneaky advertising for the lovely Smith and Son bookshop I discovered in the Marais today. I’ve literally walked past it at least ten times, but never gone in. I got myself a bookshop tote to add to my growing collection- plus it’s good to know I can source Cadbury’s flakes from somewhere! Apart from that, I spent what is probably my last day at the Bibliothéque Historique, had a little wander around Île St-Louis and worked another shift at the American Library. Because churches are apparently my new thing, here’s another one: St-Étienne-du-Mont. Which may or may not be the reason why I named my favourite character in my novel Étienne. It’s by far the most beautiful one I’ve seen so far- Notre-Dame can go home! Apart from that, I tried to get into the Panthéon to commune with Monsieur Hugo, but I missed their opening hours by five minutes. And I tried the second-best baguette in Paris, according to the Annual Paris Baguette Prize 2023. I’m not making that up by the way, it’s a real thing. This is St-Eustache Church, which is incredibly beautiful on the inside. What was less beautiful is that I got trapped in a pew during Mass and only managed to extract myself after forty-five minutes of alternating Latin and rapid-fire French, which were about equally incomprehensible. Besides that, I had more delicious pastries- including a ruinously expensive, but delicious chocolate éclair from Stohrer- discovered a new favourite park (Parc Georges Brassens, they have a clock tower!) and went to an amazing used book market. I could have walked out of there with at least five books, but managed to restrain myself. Luckily they didn’t have any nice copies of Les Mis to tempt me! I also had a little look around Rue Montorgueuil, which I think is overhyped and listened to a very cool brass band. I know Montmartre is super touristy, but come on, it’s Amélie’s carousel! I was very tempted to get on it. I didn’t see Sacré-Cœur, alas, because there was a marathon on and it seemed like all of Paris was out and about. And speaking of marathons, it was definitely a mistake to take the steps up to the top of the hill. It is beautiful up there though, even on a grey day like today. Apart from that, I went to two organic markets, found my new favourite pastry- the Paris-Brest, a mix of choux pastry, praliné cream and I suspect several strongly addictive substances- and visited the Bibliothéque Mazarine. Talk about posh. I almost got a subscription for that too, but managed to restrain myself. Notre-Dame by night… I sadly didn’t meet Quasimodo, but I did see progress on the construction site. Every time I come back, there’s a little less scaffolding. Apart from that, I did more research today- I’m currently ploughing through trial records that are a) full of legalese and b) in the tiniest font possible. The things we do for research! But I did have a lovely lunch break in Place des Vosges and some delicious apple pie at Shakespeare and Co. It was actually pretty empty, as that shop goes. Getting off my soapbox now! Anyway, apparently it’s Poetry Month here in France and I saw this mural in my second-favourite Parisian bookshop, La Mouette Rieuse (The Laughing Seagull. No idea why it’s called that). Having a little browse and an overpriced muffin there was a much-needed pick-me-up after a morning buried in eyewitness accounts of the barricades. The first trees are in bloom! I’ve always wanted to see cherry blossom in Paris and now I have. At least I assume that’s a cherry tree… Apart from that, I successfully conquered a laundromat today, had a little wander around my neighbourhood and spent my first day researching at the Bibliotheque Historique. It’s inconceivable to me that they just let you touch 200-year-old books with your bare hands, but they do. My inner bibliophile was wriggling with excitement. And to round off the day, I almost got locked in a French post office after closing. Tomorrow will hold more research. The sunset this evening was like something out of a picture postcard. It was definitely one of those “okay, now I remember why I’m here” moments! Which was just what I needed after I had to navigate my way around a French hardware shop. I mean, even when I speak the language, I have no idea what half the products do. But I successfully managed to acquire a smoke alarm. Which then promptly went off in the supermarket… To console myself, I had a kebab from the shop I live above and it was amazing! That was my exciting Sunday. It was either another door or the delicious chocolate cake I had this afternoon- but I refuse to be one of those people who post their food on Instagram. So the door it is! This one is near the AirBnB where I first fell in love with Paris. Which would probably have involved slightly less annoying neighbours. Mine are still yelling at each other… Apart from that, I spent today tacking up posters (thrilling, right?), being searched by a security guard because I apparently look like a shoplifter and finally getting my research pass for the National Library. No more queuing in the long line! And I found a beautiful flower shop near me called Les Bouquets d’Asters. I would have taken a picture, but my glasses were so steamy I couldn’t see a thing.
