Do you sometimes feel like you're going too fast? Me too. Like, constantly. But sometimes the most profound answers are also the simplest. To reduce our emissions, reduce our waste, increase our happiness and those of our families and the others around us, we just need to do the thing we all want to do more of - slow down. We can do less. Have less. Travel less. Eat less. Work less. Definitely buy less. With each dollar that we don’t spend, and with each minute that we pass reading in bed or walking through the forest, we’re voting for a better world. Of course we can't all give up work and laze about - there's rent to pay and kids to look after. But we can fold a little more slowness into the edges of life. We all want to do it - it's about giving ourselves permission to live those moments of stillness. To say no a little more so we can say yes to ourselves. Sounds pretty good to me. Doing nothing is a low-carbon activity, and I want more of it in my life. Who’s keen to come for a walk this arvo? 🥰 #permacultureillustrator #slowdownandenjoylife #artwithpurpose #artasactivism

BIG DIFFERENCE! We don’t need to spend money to be waste- or plastic-free. But you wouldn’t know that by looking at the shiny instagram ads and shop fronts selling us everything we never needed to live an ethical low-waste life. Is it really better to buy some mass-produced reusable item than to buy second-hand or use what we have? My cutlery in the drawer in my kitchen works fine at home, so why wouldn’t it work as well when I go for lunch at the farmers market? As for those supposedly compostable bio-plastics...much better to avoid them by bringing along a cup or container from home. Supporting local artisans is of course leagues better than buying from Kmart, but it’s not always affordable or even available in every area. Everything that’s new requires resources to make, so using what already exists, and committing to use less, is the best way to live a low-waste life, and buying new from ethical sources works for what can’t be sourced used. That’s my motto about being waste free, what’s yours? #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

Sometimes it feels like we’re supposed to be a level 5 greenie like the character on the left. You know...impossibly accomplished in every single way, with a negative carbon footprint and all of the skills and time to do all of the things. But even those people we look up to as having it all figured out have things that they do better than others, and they certainly didn’t get to where they are overnight. I’m happy to throw away the comparisons and just do my best. I used to live in permaculture paradise so some things (like growing and preserving most of my own food) were really easy. I currently live in a house truck with a tiny kitchen and no storage, so some things that used to be simple are out of my reach for now. That’s cool, as I’m focusing on broader activism and community-building instead, and my current home is closer to town so I could swap my car for a bike. We can let others inspire and motivate us, and leave behind the shame and guilt, as everyone’s situation is different. I’d love a hat that doubled as a flower pot, though. What are your feelings about this? #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

HOW GOOD ARE SNACKS?! But not all snacks are created equal. We know about the single-use plastic that we throw away when we’ve finished a snack, but they do a pretty good job of hiding all of the other waste involved in bringing that snack to our cupboards. Each step of the industrial process is, ya know, industrial. So not great. I’ve never worked in a plastic packaging factory in China but I’m not sure it’s the fulfilling life-affirming career that we’re all striving for. And then there are the sugar plantations... It takes more effort to make your own snacks, although it’s often much cheaper and better and healthier and all that. Not everyone likes to cook, but not every snack needs to be a masterpiece - home dried apple is about as simple as they come, and oh so tasty. It’s worth keeping in mind what our choices support, and it’s through those choices that we vote for a better world. If you’re ever in Western Australia, come round to my place to chat more about this over a pot of tea and some home made beetroot brownies. What's your favourite good vibes snack at the moment? #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

Struggling to pay the bills? Overwhelmed by interest repayments? How wealthy are you on a global scale? If we were to pile up everyone’s wealth in $100 bills, most people in the world would be sitting on the floor. Middle-class people from wealthy countries would have a pile of notes as high as a chair. And to explain why, even if we have so much more than others, we're still struggling to pay for housing and food, we then consider the super-rich. Their pile of $100 bills would be so high it would tower above the tallest building, the tallest mountain, the Earth’s atmosphere, and take them into space. There are almost 3,000 people (billionaires) with piles of money this high. Inequality is not an unavoidable state of affairs. Regulation and legislation can prevent such an inequitable wealth accumulation, and redistribute it in ways that help people and planet. Think of how much good even a handful of those funds could do in your community, in your school, in your neighbourhood. Equal societies have more healthy citizens, better education, happier people and far better environmental outcomes. Let’s stand by those who are working towards the end of obscene wealth. What does this illustration make you feel? Thanks @oxfaminternational for this info. #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

Resilience in Major Sectors Brenna Quinlan @brenna_quinlan Individual action vs top-down action - what’s better? Is it worth even trying as an individual when the big players can change so much with the stroke of a pen? Well, the short answer is that each feeds into the other. When people are switched on, motivated, creative and active, their communities and political representatives will reflect that. The last Australian election saw a political shake-up on an unprecedented scale, where people voted in independents and minor parties based on their commitment to climate action. This kind of change is occurring because individuals all over the country are engaged with the big issues. It’s not really about the small amount of emissions you save each time you turn off the lights in an empty room. It’s about the connection you have with the issues that compels you to turn off that unused light. It’s about the important part you play in this global movement for change, and the ripples that you’re causing in your own pond. The answer isn’t either/or, it’s yes, and. We need committed and inspired individuals as much as we need progressive communities and leaders who get it. It’s all a big part of the same picture, and it’s snowballing in the right direction. Have you seen individuals make change in your community, or even at a higher level? We’d love to hear about them in the chat. #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator #whatsnextforearth #resilienceinmajorsectors

Lawn to Edible Front Yard Garden I loved working on this design with @wildheritage This front yard will go from a flat one-note lawn to an edible front yard paradise. It will be full of perennial edibles and medicinal herbs like honeyberry, chives, sand cherries, grapes, hardy kiwi, asparagus, black raspberries, strawberries, yarrow, bee balm, echinacea, goldenseal, and a LOT more. We’ve also got a nice cut flower and pollinator garden in the front. I cannot wait to experience the transformation on this one! Have a question about which perennial edibles you can grow in Colorado? Ask me a question in the comments below, and I’ll answer them in stories. #permaculturedesign #permaculture #permaculturewomen #permacultureplants #permaculturedesigner #permacultureillustrator #permacultureproject #virtualdesign #farmdesign #growyourown #edibleplants #herbgarden #herbgardens #herbgardenlove #designideas #landscapedesignideas #herbgardening #onlinelandscapedesigns #growfood #ediblegarden #ediblelandscape #edibleflowers #ediblelandscapedesign #ediblegardendesign #coloradogarden #coloradogardening #perennialedibles #raisedbeds #growfoodnotlawns #reduceyourlawn

FARMING AND SPIRTUALITY Masanobu Fukuoka was a Japanese microbiologist who became a farmer. He pioneered a method called “natural farming” which allowed minimal human interference in its process and created conditions in which the natural process would maximize crop outputs. He took nature as the inspiration for his spirituality instead of doctrinal religion. He describes natural farming as a spiritual practice, connecting us to the land and ourselves. Can we heal the land and purify our spirits? And can we, through this, feel connection in our lives, rather than disconnection and dissatisfaction with our modern life? Our answer is yes! What are your thoughts? Tell us in the comments 🙏🏽 Love, Lisa & Paul 🤎 #permaculture #permaculturegarden #permaculturedesign #permaculturefarm #permacultureillustrator #naturalfarming #permacultureeducation #masanobufukuoka #naturalgardening

Have you left good ideas lying around? There’s that concept of the lighthouse in the dark - that by doing all the things, you’re serving as a beacon in your community. We saw this at the start of 2020: covid hit, shelves ran bare, and people began stocking up on seeds, plants and even hens. Those folks who had been quietly growing veggies or running community projects in the background were all of a sudden receiving calls, messages and emails from people all over who were asking ‘how can I do what you do?’ Opportunities to share skills, seeds and zucchinis blossomed. Everybody started making sourdough. The shocks to the system will keep happening, so building resilience into our households and our communities during the good times is a great way to buffer against the shocks when they do arrive. What good ideas are taking place in your community, or what initiatives are you taking yourself? #artasactivism #permacultureillustrator #brennaquinlan #artwithpurpose

Hard to be perfect. But there’s something that drives us to be engaged. My anxieties around the future and the current state of things are kept to a dull roar by my engagement with activism and with the big issues. By teaching about it, speaking about it, drawing about it and really living in the most regenerative way that I can, I feel that I’m doing my bit, and that gets me leaping out of bed each day to do a little bit more. 2023 brought so many wonderful new opportunities and accomplishments. One of them was a silver award for a project named “Books and Berries” from the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado. wildheritage put their faith in me to design this unique garden located in the Wonderland Lake neighborhood of Boulder, Colorado. The free library, the berries planted for neighbors and hikers, the welcoming sitting boulders, the pollinator garden, native plants, and water-wise garden design make this a win for the community as well as the planet. I’m looking forward to collaborating with Wild Heritage again in 2024 to continue changing the world one garden, one yard, one ecosystem at a time. #permaculturedesign #permaculture #permaculturewomen #permacultureplants #permaculturedesigner #permacultureillustrator #permacultureproject #virtualdesign #farmdesign #growyourown #edibleplants #herbgarden #herbgardens #herbgardenlove #designideas #landscapedesignideas #herbgardening #onlinelandscapedesigns #growfood #ediblegarden #ediblelandscape #edibleflowers #ediblelandscapedesign #ediblegardendesign #coloradogarden #coloradogardening #perennialedibles #growfoodnotlawns

“You don’t need to do everything. Do what calls your heart; effective action comes from love. It is unstoppable, and it is enough.” — Joanna Macy Blessings to those who follow their heart in how they want to contribute to life. The world is blessed to have you. Illustration by the amazing Brenna Quinlan @brenna_quinlan Reshare @brenna_quinlan You know that rush of awe and emotion that you feel when you breathe in the smell of the forest? Or when you see a native animal going about its little life, and it doesn’t seem to mind that you’re there? Or when you take the time to really look deeply at the moss and the whole tiny world thriving on a small rock? What about when a butterfly lands on you and for a moment you share that beautiful connection? That is love. It’s that feeling, that connection, that reminds us of our place as interconnected animals in this ecosystem. And it’s that feeling that can keep us going when it all seems too hard. When folks say ‘what’s the point? Global warming is gong to take us all out, so why bother?’, I ask them what they love. What special swimming spot, favourite walking path, or old tree have they connected with? What colour was that butterfly that visited you that time? There is always a point to acting out of love. And us ordinary people know all about that.

Sometimes I wonder if I should really just throw it all in and invest in a cave full of beans up a mountain in New Zealand. There I'd be safe from the climate emergency, surely. And then I remember that upskilling, pressuring local government, building community resilience, growing food, and forging connections with those around me are the best buffer to the climate crisis that I can have. And they're also heaps of fun. Now we've got that sorted, I can just get on with the act of living life to its fullest. Who's with me? #permacultureillustrator #artasactivism #brennaquinlan

Is gardening a kind if therapy? For a lot of us, yes. For some, it's the chance to be outside, soaking up sunshine, hands on the soil, nature's gym. For others it's the problem-solving and rewards - when you finally get a successful carrot crop, or you set up a new compost bay that works SO well. For me, it's the kinship I feel with the plants around me. I care for the seedlings, watch them emerge from the soil, and then see them thrive over the coming months or years. And they, in turn, care for me, with flowers and soil microbes and strawberries. It's my vote in the future. An investment in the world I want to live in. A long-term experiment that I add to every day. It helps me feel like a part of something bigger. And so I find myself singing this song 😆 How does gardening help heal you? #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

🌿 Embark on a journey with us as we unveil the incredible before-and-after transformation of this project at @surfsynergy . 🌏🌿 Swipe left to witness the magic of change. Some.months ago, our drone captured a landscape eager for transformation. Fast forward to November, and the earth pulses with new life. The once barren patches are now adorned with vibrant greenery, pathways weaving like intricate tales, and erosion control vegetation standing resilient in areas that beckon protection. "Oh yes son, I'm talking to you" How's your gardening going this season? For the record, I actually quite like slugs and normally just leave them to do their thing because they're not such a problem here in our dry climate. But if they WERE a problem, I know which song I'd be singing! 🦆🦆 #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

In Winter we got no choice but to leave everything behind and go Herd the livestock to help in search of wetlands and greener pastures. I still need to raise funds to start fencing off my lands and have my private grazing yards. I want to allow me animals maximum free ranging but the conditions just do not allow it. This area is simply dry and highly infested with ticks and spiders!! Mortality amongst my tribesmen is slowing thdm all down🤔🐂🛖🧑‍🌾 Homesteading chronicles #permacultureillustrator #MyFoodIsAfrican

What does 'rich' mean to you? I'm guessing if you're seeing this image that you're not chasing the life of super yachts and private jets. To me, richness means a park, beach or forest that I can walk to. It means still-warm strawberries straight from the garden, and a pantry of preserves. It means having a community around me of people I enjoy, and time to nap, rest and be creative. What riches are you striving for in your life? #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

Can humans be a force for good? Of course! In fact, all Indigenous cultures are based on the deep knowledge of living in balance. People have been living in truly sustainable ways for almost all of human history. There are many people still living in regenerative ways that grow soil and improve biodiversity in their ecosystem. And for those living in cities or suburbs, philosophies like permaculture can help us identify the best ways that folks with jobs and kids and busy schedules can leave a trace for good, too. What ways are you planning to increase (instead of reduce) your impact? Can growth happen forever? There's this thing about growth, see. It happens, and then at some stage it stops. I mean, imagine if our feet kept growing forever...I'd imagine it's really hard to drive in clown shoes, and you'd only get one season out of your favourite pair of socks. Or what if your childhood pet guineapig got bigger every year until it was too large to be held by the gravitational pull of the Earth and floated off into space? It wouldn't be all bad, you could train it to eat Jeff Bezos' rocket ship on the way. But feet and guineapigs don't grow indefinitely because there are limits to growth. And despite what modern economics would have us believe, economies can't grow indefinitely on a finite planet either. Luckily some progressive nations are waking up to the fact that GDP and the growth addiction are what's behind the issues of biodiversity loss, global warming, inequality and consumerism. Bhutan started measuring happiness instead of GDP back in 2008, and New Zealand took a similar step last year. What are your thoughts on GDP and growth - can we shift to a different system? #permacultureillustrator #degrowth #gdp

Are we stronger when we work together? I had a big conversation with someone last week who has very different views from what I do on a number of issues. But we agreed that staying friends is important. When our town had a peaceful climate protest (we formed a human sign saying 'We Can Do It' and sent the drone photo to parliament), he was there with his family. When tragedy struck another local family, he was there to support them in their grief. And when we needed help with our house build, he was first in line. Wherever we argue amongst ourselves, we're distracting our energies from the bigger issues, and we're damaging the most important things: family, friendship, community and our capacity for collective activism. Of course we need boundaries in our lives to protect ourselves from people who harm us. But for everything else, we gain so much from being able to disagree in a healthy way. I don't want to be caught arguing with my neighbour while another gas plant is snuck through parliament overnight. Let me know how you're going with this - have you been able to overcome differences? #permacultureillustrator #brennaquinlan #artasactivism

Exactly 🙏🕊♥️🕊♥️🕊✨️ . REPOSTED from @brenna_quinlan Can you hold complexity in your mind? This quote was written about the war in Gaza but it rings true for many of the big issues that we face and hear about. Socials' algorithms and sensationalist click bait media encourage polarisation. We're either in camp A or camp B. These folks are right, and these are wrong. Yes or no. Left or right. The world doesn't really function in binaries. We see it all the time, when we get mad at a friend and then feel better when they explain what was really going on for them that day. Nuances, subtleties, truths that aren't immediately obvious on first glance, these all hide below the surface. I have Israeli and Arab neighbours. They each have truths around this conflict. They each have my support and care through this tragic time. They also have my respect, as they've done so much to stay connected and to increase their understanding of each other during the last few difficult weeks. Thanks @yuval_noah_harari for your words on this issue. #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator #artasactivism

Feeling burned out? Still feeling the urgency to do your bit? It's a hard place to be in. When I feel torn between what I need for my mental health, and what I feel is needed of me, I remind myself that I'm part of a movement. Movements are like a choir, in that everyone does their own special part, and when someone needs to take a breath, there are so many voices singing that the song goes on. So do what you need to do to keep yourself healthy. We can't sing when we're out of breath, but when we pause to inhale deeply, we can sing clearer and louder than ever. #artasactivism #permacultureillustrator #brennaquinlan

Which one do you like best? We kinda know deep down that not all foods are created equal. When we see something that's packaged and processed and has a million unidentifiable ingredients on the label, we know we're holding a product that prioritises shelf life and profit. But what about veggies? Firstly, it's important to acknowledge that eating veggies of all kinds, and that includes the non-organic kinds, far outweighs the health risks of not eating veggies. So veggies are great, in whatever form they come (as an avid dumpster diver I can attest to this). And freezing food is a great way to preserve that food when it's at its best. But behind every mass-produced item, there is a trail of emissions and waste, including the fertilisers used on the farm, the pesticides and fungicides, the plastic packaging, the huge warehouses and the refrigerated freight. Let's consider the organic broccoli. It might be from a local farm, in which case it's probably helping to regenerate soils and local economies. But it might also be from industrial organic, with a footprint involving tillage of soils and high waste from food beauty standards. And let's not forget that good food should be a right, not a privilege. Now behold the home grown broccoli. This could be grown in a community garden, on a balcony in pots, or on the verge so that everyone in the street can access their neighbourhood produce. Sprouting broccoli keeps on giving, the more you harvest, the more it gives. But it can't be grown industrially because harvesting costs would be too high. This humble variety is the poster child of food justice🥦 Like I said, eating veggies is good for you, regardless of where they're from, but some kinds of veg just make much more sense than others. What's your food justice favourite? Mulberry Street trees are one of my favourites 🍓🫐🍒 #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

Sometimes when I walk into my office and look at my two computer screens a huge smile comes to my face. They are filled with photos of flowers, gardens, plants, trees, colors, textures, and inspiring outdoor spaces. This is the palette and inspiration I get to work with all day, day in and day out. My greatest accomplishment is when clients tell me their garden is their sanctuary. Knowing that I have helped to create that sanctuary while also providing a benefit to the local ecosystem makes it even more magical. Have a question about eco-friendly landscaping, permaculture, ecological design, edible gardens, blooming perennials, native plants, water wise design, pollinator plants, weeds, or anything else garden or landscape related? I'd love to share my experiences, knowledge and inspirations with you. Drop it below! . . . . . #permaculturedesign #permaculture #permaculturewomen #permacultureplants #permaculturedesigner #permacultureillustrator #permacultureproject #virtualdesign #farmdesign #growyourown #edibleplants #herbgardens #herbgardenlove #designideas #landscapedesignideas #herbgardening #onlinelandscapedesigns #growfood #nativeplants #ediblegarden #ediblelandscape #edibleflowers#coloradonativeplants #plantnativeplants #plantforbirds #birdhabitat #habitatgarden #habitatgardening #habitatgardens #sanctuarygarden

Feeling the feels? Today Australia voted no to enshrine an Indigenous voice to parliament in our nation's constitution. After months of campaigning and respectful education about a potentially game-changing step for our nation, it's a hard result to hear. Misinformation, racism and conservative ideology pushed the no vote across the line, and it's difficult to see how we as a nation can recover. But this isn't the end. This is the start of something big. As @yes23au so eloquently say on their page, 'this referendum represented a promise made to Indigenous Australians for a better future, and it's a promise we must find a way to keep'. Thousands of volunteers have created communities across the country in support of the yes vote, and Indigenous Australians and their needs are at the front of everyone's minds. Out of the ashes of this referendum, a forest can regrow. Questions around transparency of political donations, partisanism in politics, divisive social media algorithms and the unethical shadow of the Murdoch press have all been raised. For progress to happen in this country, we need to shine a light on all of this. And we need to grieve, breathe, and then pick ourselves up and keep going. Now is a time to stick together. To reach out to those who will be feeling this result that hardest. And to bravely face the road ahead. This referendum was but one step. Its result will not stop us walking forward. #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator

Keen to learn more about the permaculture principles? In a very exciting collaboration, I worked with permaculture band @formidableveg and permaculture co-originator David Holmgren to bring the principles of permaculture to life. Alongside the original wordings of David's principles, we worked with David to include a catchy new way of saying each principle (because tbh some were a little wordy), as well as a song lyric and an illustration. Whether you're teaching permaculture, or learning it yourself, this poster is designed to help you remember and integrate the principles into your world. Available as an A1 high quality poster, or as a digital download to print at home. Check my website (ink in bio) for both options. Head to the FAQ on my website for access to translated versions, or to translate it yourself into your language. #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator #permaculture #permaculturefarm #permaculturelife #permaculturegarden #permaculturedesign #permaculturefrance #permacultureliving #permaculturegardening #permaculturedesigncourse

#Repost @brenna_quinlan ・・・ Are you a part of nature? It's funny how we see ourselves as separate from 'the natural world'. There's the human sphere, with its plastics, cement, computers, synthetic chemicals and fossil fuels. And then there's nature - a place of limited humanness, with trees, ocean, birds. A place to be protected or mourned. A place where we have no place. Indigenous cultures all know deeply that humans are an integral part of any ecosystem. The caretakers, the collaborators, the listeners to forces much grander than ourselves. For many cultures, there is no word for 'nature', as nature is everything. Western culture sees humans as separate. This has its roots in Christianity, which replaced a connected view with one involving a single god existing outside of the natural world, one that gave humans dominion over the world around them. But we are connected. We all care about our planet and the other beings on it. Our bodies are flush with microbes, our food is pollinated by insects, our air is filtered by plants and the water in our bodies fell as rain seeded by trees. People are happier when their offices face green spaces. We feel a deep sadness when a river or forest or park that we've loved is vandalised or bulldozed. We speak up and keep going, even when it's hard, because we are nature defending itself. What's your relationship like with nature? #artasactivism #brennaquinlan #permacultureillustrator
