One of my apple trees has blooms! I’m so very excited at the prospect of having apples this year. It’s so unlikely, as only one of the three trees I planted last year bloomed, but I am hopeful that this Ginger Gold will have received some cross pollination from a nearby crab apple in our neighbors lot. Alpine strawberries. Are you a fan? They might be my favorite variety. Why are they my favorite ? Man-oh-man do they have a unique and wonderful flavor! While other strawberries I’ve grown have had to be picked at the peak of ripeness to avoid being sour, alpine berries are always sweet and have hints of pineapple flavors. Well, it tastes like pineapple to me at least as well as most of the people who have sampled it while visiting the garden. Another reason I appreciate them is because of where they grow. Not all plants, especially fruits and vegetables, can handle shade. Alpine strawberries thrive in the shade. Why do some people not like them? Well, the berries are small in size. They don’t produce a bumper crop all at once like many other varieties either. Instead, they produce a slow steady stream all summer long which has its pros and cons. I have come to enjoy a handful of berries a week with breakfast, or as a savored snack while I’m weeding. It’s easy to see why you don’t see them in the grocery stores…they simply don’t produce the volume at the same time to warrant selling them. However, I do feel like I get a handful regularly all spring to fall. For a home garden though, it can be a great little addition. What is your favorite kind of strawberry? My yard is absolutely awash in flowers, and my backyard in particular is flooded with the incredible fragrance of Japanese plum flowers. This time of year always reaffirms my love for fruit trees as gorgeous aesthetic additions to our landscape. Bumblebees, honeybees, native bees, flies, ants and spiders are all over them. It's incredible. Yes I love eating from local trees, but I love the intangible sensual joy that fruit trees give us while they flower. Why aren't fruit trees considered in discussions of ornamental plants? I was never a flower guy before, but now I find myself stopping to gush over them on a daily basis. This is the year for Redbuds (Cercis canadensis var. canadensis). This is a native tree whose roots can be found growing from the Atlantic coast to parts of Texas, although there is a variety of of Redbud called Texas Redbud (C. texensis). These are such popular trees because of their gorgeous display of brilliant flowers which are present before their heart-shaped foliage opens up. There is the myth that Judas hung himself on the related Cercis, (C. siliquastrum), and after that the white flowers turned red with blood. Hence why the Redbud is sometimes referred to as a Judas tree. This is one tree I love but have a hard time telling others they should grow this on their own property. Over the past two decades I have seen many Redbuds just fail. Old ones, middle-aged ones, young ones, as well as newly planted. Sections of the tree would appear to fail, and not show any life, and over a period the whole tree would die. We’ve seen this and currently have a specimen that is exhibiting a dying section. But now I think I figured it out after planting many Cercis. I believe it’s root system is strangling the tree, and although it took us awhile to notice what was the cause, when we did see it we cut the above section of the root which was wrapping around the trunk as if it was gonna put it in a stranglehold! (See last photos including the after cut with remnants of sawdust).

🌳🪱 Another beautiful installation in the books! Did we all get sunburnt? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. We installed a nice mixed hedgerow of native shrubs and trees for our friends Pilar and Peter in Jenktintown over the weekend. We stacked as many applicable and deer resistant shrubs into the mix as possible. Still waiting on our Amsonia hubrichtii and redtwig dogwoods to show up so that we can pop those in. But what we did put in was a sweet bay magnolia, two redbuds, a fringe tree, a dogwood, many fothergilla, inkberry, dwarf American holly, sweetspire, summer sweet, Chokeberry ground hug, buckeye bottlebrush, as well as a mix of flowering perennials. One main area of focus is the walkway to the front door which is planted with pink muhly grass, swamp milkweed, and butterfly weed on both sides. We also installed a group of shade loving plants below the existing maple to fill in the corner. I’m starting the wine cap mushroom (stropharia Rugosoannulata) bed all over. It’s covering the majority of zone 1. Zone 1A had a King Snake (black and yellow) living in the tall mint and sunchoke bed. Tuff Tray - On the Farm. We are in a bit of a tuff tray lull for two reasons. 1. The weather is improving so we are outdoors as much as possible. 2. It is prime season for wild plants! While farmers are preparing their fields for another year of produce and yields are at its lowest, nature shows itself from its most fruitful side. We went to the creeks, paths and peaks of Takigahara Village with Sumio-San (forager) and Onori-San (forager) to forage edible plants and learn from their wisdom about the edible landscape of Ishikawa. Since its inception, ishinoko festival has emphasised building a robust food programme that not only provides nutritious food but also stirs diners’ curiosity. We believe that nourishing our minds is just as important as nourishing our bodies. For the past four iterations, our kitchen has been run by chefs from all over Japan and the world who share our passion for local, seasonal fare that is not only ecologically sound but also celebrates the history and culture of Ishikawa. The result? Our diners leave with full bellies and a new appreciation for the forests, seas, and fields of Ishikawa. This year, we are excited to bring our food programme to the next level in the form of @ishinoko.kitchen — a series of gastronomic adventures that brings chefs and food professionals closer to the smells and tastes of Ishikawa. We hope that through 7 days of thoughtful exploration and experimentation, participants will emerge with not only greater understanding of Ishikawa’s culinary landscape but also inspiration to feed their personal and professional lives. Our DiMeo blueberry plants and bushes are not greenhouse grown. Remember, the biggest problem with blueberry plants today is that they lack cold hardiness. That’s because all these online nurseries, big box stores and local nurseries are all using greenhouses to grow and raise all their blueberry plants and other berry plants, so that they can get them to grow faster. But then that ruins the cold hardiness of the blueberry plants, because they have never been outside through a real actual winter before you bought them and the greenhouse will not allow them to go dormant for the winter which is a critical part of their lifecycle. Yes, when you first buy them, they might look great, and yes, they all display them outside, but they grew and raised them in a greenhouse. Then when winter comes along and your blueberry plants experience frost, freeze, ice, snow and freezing cold temperatures for the very first time, guess what, that’s on your dime. The plants will not grow right or crop right and you will end up having to replant many of them. This is why our grandfather never liked greenhouses. He always said, “those greenhouses make weak plants.” We grow our DiMeo blueberry plants the same old fashioned way our great-grandfather did back in 1916 to make them super cold hardy.
