This is a photo of a tired and happy boy. The whole family had an adventure walk together. We took a little detour in a new spot and he was determined he was going too - until he had a small fall into a hole that was covered with brush 🤕 He’s ok but the walk home was a little wobbly. Kyber has been such a trooper at the pet expo. He has posed for photos, gotten lots of treats and attention and is now cuddled up in bed. For this guy only being 10m old he has truly impressed me with how above and beyond he has gone this week. Wriley loves his Serta dog bed. The bolster around the sides gives him a great place to rest his head. Has anyone tried laser therapy for their dog? I’ve had this recommended a few times and I’m looking at a practice that does this in my area. Just hanging in there here in the very wet PNW. Since we have been sharing our journey here - I thought I would add a few small updates. We started green lipped mussel at the suggestion of others here and then also by our vet. This seems to be a helpful supplement. We are also on joint supplements. The biggest thing I’ve noted recently is Wriley is more careful than he was before. He’s adapting to his new normal and taking more time and care as he navigates this world. Happy FriDane! Ready for the weekend. Wriley is too! He’s enjoying the nicer fall weather and spending a lot of time out in the yard. I am leaving on a work trip on Monday - it’s very short, just two days. But sometimes Wriley’s condition deteriorates when I’m gone. He is at home with his family and attentive care, so I know he’s in the best place. Hoping he manages through this trip with ease. Otherwise he’s plugging along - asking for attention walks and food on the regular. These awkward sit moments happen sometimes. We use his harness to get him resettled. I don’t find a lot of information online about the practical side of dealing with this condition, so I’m ever so grateful for @abbottcostello for sharing their insights. Wriley has good days and bad ones. The good ones outweigh the bad ones at this point. He will have a bad day and then with rest he will bounce back. We just went for a nice walk around the neighborhood and jogged home (and barked at a neighbor and an Amazon truck). For his potty habits we have reverted to puppy stage. This has made a huge difference and we’ve avoided the 💩 accidents that happen every once in a while . The bad days are hard- falling down, struggling to get up or get into the yard and on those days he sleeps a lot and stays mostly in the other room. Trying out a new spot. Wriley has never done the ‘Dane sit’ on furniture but he does now. I think he’s discovered with his lessened mobility that it’s easier to park his butt and flop onto whatever piece of furniture he chooses. This harness has been great! Wriley is doing really great! 🤩 If you saw our stories, he was having some urinary issues and had peed inside a couple of times. Of course we worry that this is related to his underlying spinal issues, but in this case it was not. After not being able to get him in the car ☹️ last weekend for a vet visit, we opted to take a urine sample in. That happened on Wednesday. The vet called and said he had so many white blood cells in his urine, more than she had seen before: Indications were UTI, which is pretty unusual but not unheard of in males, underlying stones or worse, cancer. We still don’t know but I can report they the mega antibiotics are helping!! After 36 hours his urine is back to yellow and he’s feeling very spunky. 👏🏼 We are still being practical - aging is a process and this can be part of his journey. Birthday number nine is on September 12. Being a compassionate owner of an aging dog is sometimes hard. He was supposed to go to the vet today and stumbled getting in the car - then lost his confidence and wouldn’t get in. Thankfully the vet pivoted to a phone appointment with fifteen minutes to spare (thank you #banfield). Where are we in this journey if we can’t get in the car? 😢 The plan is to get a urine sample and take that in for testing (he’s having pee issues, peeing frequently or not enough). His blood work from August was all normal. A urine sample can check a few things. I’m committed to two things - given his age and underlying wobblers - 1. Letting him live his best life and then being willing to say goodbye for his benefit 2. Nothing invasive. Simple testing and treatment yes, but that is all. He’s a wobbly guy - foot placement is hard often and we’ve been lucky he hasn’t had another fall. He still had more good days than bad - but trying to find the right balance is hard. I love this guy so much and am so happy to have had this much time with him. Handsome 😈 He went through a period of sleeping in one place regardless of where the rest of us were. But he’s back to making sure he’s close by and within scratch and hug distance. Walks are good but he tires pretty easily ever since he fell back in late July. He still enjoys going and sniffing all his favorite spots, even if the walks are shorter to make sure he has energy to get back home. Sunday vibes. Thanks all for the comments and for checking in. Wriley has two big anniversaries coming up - his Adoptaversary this month and his birthday (9!!!) in September. Wriley went to acupuncture yesterday (it’s been a while). While the ins and outs of the car to get there are a challenge, he loves his treatments! We are so grateful to @drbeckyacuvet for her patience with him. His appetite has been low the past week but he came home after acupuncture, ate all of his dinner and wanted more! Before the latest issues with mobility, Wriley got a new bed. We read a lot of reviews and asked a lot of people for their recommendations. Wriley needed dense supportive foam AND soft memory foam in a large enough bed. Big Barker is a huge favorite I know - but they are really firm and a little outside the budget at this time. So we found a Sealy bed and he loves it! The first one got lost (thanks Amazon, or not) so we ordered again. He immediately moved in once it arrived. @sealy He’s been doing ok. Improving a little but not eating well and sleeping quite a lot (some of that is probably the gabapentin but hard to say). He’s getting around but carefully and getting up is hard, but no falls since last Thursday. One day at a time and embracing all the moments. We went for the tiniest walk down the street today and he enjoyed that, then he tried to zoomie in the backyard and I had to stop him 😢 He can’t afford another injury at this point. Keep him in your thoughts please. It took Cash a long time but he’s very comfortable with Wriley. ❤️ First- many thanks for all the well wishes for Wriley, my handsome boy. We had a few scary days but a positive update. We went to the vet yesterday, we got a last minute in office cancel and somehow I managed to get this guy in the car (lots of creative problem solving). The vet was very thorough and felt he has a soft tissue injury (thankful it’s nothing worse) that in addition to his size and his underlying condition was the tipping point. He has declined slowly over time and doesn’t get around as well as he used to, he lacks confidence and has trouble getting his feet in the right places often. He seems to have injured his right rear leg/hip in the fall, and his right side has been more impacted by the neurologic effects so he’s weaker on that side already. She also felt that his range of motion and his reaction to various maneuvers were more pain or weakness than increased neurological symptoms. This is good news. So he’s on a rest period and seems better even today. We had no falls yesterday, but some clumsy moments for sure. Today he’s back to exploring the yard and I’m having to force the resting. I’m grateful and thank all of you for the kind well wishes. I also know he’s a nearly 9 year old giant breed with an underlying condition that has been having an increasing impact on his mobility. So we take it one day at a time. This time, he’s bouncing back and we will do all we can to avoid any further injuries of any kind. Please send love and healing and prayers to Wriley. He took a fall the other day (somehow got his legs caught up in the magnetic screen and fell out onto the deck). He has existing spinal compression so we are worried about the impact. Yesterday he fell multiple times and wasn’t able to get up. He’s getting some cbd and gabapentin in addition to his anti inflammatory drugs - but this isn’t a good state for any giant dog 😢 With some careful attention it became obvious that he’s worse when he lays on his right side and his right back hip so we are trying to keep him better positioned. This morning he’s up and around almost like nothing happened - so I think we are going to have good days and bad days. He is of course scheduled for a vet visit and this seems like a progression of his already diagnosed condition, likely impacted by his fall. The goal is to keep him happy and comfortable, priority 1. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

The big guy went camping for part of our long weekend trip. He had some trouble getting in the car but made it and spent the first night out with us. The campsites didn’t have much privacy and the main campground road was right next to the trailers - so Wriley had a lot of issues with proximity of people. I’m so happy he was able to go, even if it wasn’t for the entire trip. I love this guy so much and I am so happy he’s been doing so well. He turns 9 in August and I try to love all of the moments with him. I’ve been gone out of the house a lot the last few weeks; helping family move, meeting up with friends passing through and spending a night around wine country to celebrate my birthday. And then, of course, camping season! To take Wriley I prefer parks where we have a decent site size so he can have enough distance from others and not be overly reactive to those around us. But, when he stays home he gets so much love and attention from family I don’t feel bad leaving him here. We had a regular vet checkup and some vaccines yesterday. Heart and lungs are good, we’ve added a few pounds (3-4) and bloodwork was all good. Rimadyl at 125 mg twice daily has been our regimen since the last neurologist visit. We also had been on a high dose of quality cbd but we backed off after discussions with his acupuncture vet and he’s actually been in a steady state. The blood results are good after being on rimadyl for so long. Overall he’s healthy. We talked about his teeth and the process of a dental on a dog with some spinal compression in his neck. The risk of harming him is greater than the risk of leaving his teeth alone, so we will continue with home care. Mobility has been pretty steady, with occasional days that have a bit more unsteadiness and back feet sliding out when standing. The goal is making his path as easy as possible by avoiding stairs and keeping traction mats in place. We take regular walks for sniffing and exploring (sniffaris per @ozzy._.bear ). So we remain in a steady state and manage life to meet his needs as much as possible (he’s not objecting 😉). The big 9 birthday is in the future, in September. We consider all of this a blessing and will continue to monitor him and allow his old man demands. ❤️❤️❤️ He’s moms handsome boy for sure! We even took off his muzzle (the vet called it his party hat) to do the tooth check and he did great. We could probably do without it but it makes everyone more at ease. 8.5 years old. When Wriley had to see the neurologist (twice) for some concerns about his gait and the sliding of his back feet when standing - I was worried. A dog this big and a dreaded concern about spinal compression make for worrisome times. Without an mri ($6-$8k), we have no definitive diagnosis. However the treatment plan doesn’t change if you do have one, so the focus has been comfort and quality of life. We take anti inflammatories twice a day. We did high doses of CBD for quite a while and have backed off due to some newer studies of waning efficacy. We have been to acupuncture on and off. This guy has surprised me! Yes his rear foot placement is uncertain at times and his rear feet slide out when he’s standing - so we’ve made as many accommodations as possible to avoid stairs (we can’t entirely) and ease his path. We have opted out of dental cleanings for two reasons and after discussion with the vet. The first being the angle they keep their head for the dental is a risk due to where his compression is. The other is he startles when he comes out of anesthesia and this is considered another risk he doesn’t need to take. Anyone have suggestions for dealing with stinky mouth? He will tolerate some level of brushing but not enough. . . We haven’t posted as much because there hasn’t been much to post- mostly a comfortable resting boy and occasional zoomies.
