Leonard Peltier has spent over half his life in prison. Now, at nearly 80 years old, his health has taken a downward turn leading advocates to call for his release. Peltier is currently serving two life sentences at the Coleman Maximum Security prison in Florida in connection to the deaths of two FBI agents in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians citizen is considered by many to be a political prisoner. On April 12, Jenipher Jones, a lead attorney for Peltierโs post-conviction legal efforts, filed a Request for Communications with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and the United Nations Special Procedures group. The request asked for communication between the UN and United States regarding a denial of medical care to Peltier and a need for investigation of human rights violations in United States prisons. Peltier has a heart condition, kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, degenerative joint disease, injuries to his jaw and is experiencing vision loss. Advocates said each condition requires ongoing medical care, which the Bureau of Prisons has not been providing. In 2022, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found Peltierโs imprisonment to be an โarbitraryโ detention, referring to a case with little to no evidence that an individual themselves committed a crime. The Ad Hoc Committee said it hopes that the Special Procedures will find similar violations of international law in Peltierโs medical treatment and confinement.

๐ซArtist Spotlight : Shepard Fairey @obeygiant ๐ซ Shepard Fairey is an American graphic artist and social activist who is part of the Street Art movement along with other artists, including Banksy and JR. Fairey blurs the boundary between traditional and commercial art through type and image, communicating his brand of social critique via prints, murals, stickers, and posters in public spaces. Born on February 15, 1970, in Charleston, South Carolina, Fairey graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in illustration. In 1989, Fairey created the Andrรจ the Giant Has a Posse sticker campaign, featuring a stylized image of the wrestler Andrรจ the Giant. This project was the foundation for his seminal Obey series, which helped to push Fairey into the public spotlight. The artist is perhaps best known for his Hopeย (2008) campaign, which portrays a portrait of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama in red, white, and blue. In 2017, the artist created a series of three posters featuring portraits of culturally diverse women, again using a red, white, and blue color scheme in response to the xenophobic rhetoric of President-elect Donald Trump. Fairey currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. His works are included in the collections of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In โResurgenceโ, we feature three of Shepardโs posters from his collaboration with Aaron Huey @argonautphoto , the Pine Ridge Billboard Campaign, a movement for treaty and land rights for the Lakota.ย Fairey turned Hueyโs photographs of the Lakota people, as well as their messages, into posters. The posters they made were posted online and available for download for free as a way to spread the message of social injustice. After they started mass producing these posters to meet high demands, they formed Amplifier.org to produce more campaigns to produce social changes from immigration to criminal justice reform. The #CountdownToSummer is still going strong! There are 34 DAYS until Memorial Day and today we want to continue our focus on food and outdoor fun by highlighting our #RegenerativeGarden program! There are several new gardens in different areas of the reservation that are taking root and beginning to provide organic and nutritious food for the community! Some of the most common health-related issues on the reservation are diabetes, heart disease, and general malnutrition. Many children rely on school lunches to fill their bellies because there isn't enough food at home. Calls are constantly coming in to our team members looking for food assistance. In order to address the critical demand of healthy food, we met with several experts last year who helped lead us in the planning and planting of gardens that not only provide fruits and vegetables, but also provide an amazing opportunity for children and adults to learn about gardening and connect with the Earth in a spiritual way - something that is incredibly important in Lakota culture. As the years go on, these gardens will continue to provide more and more food - getting the reservation closer to the goal of self-sufficiency and out of the current food desert! Pine Ridge, South Dakota Chamberlain Indian School was opened in 1898, one of 25 off-reservation schools established by the federal government in the plains region. Its goal was to assimilate Native American children into mainstream white American culture. At this time, the children were not permitted to speak native languages or practice their religion. They were given Christian names, had their hair cut, and were forced to wear European-style clothing. Because of the isolated location, the school was planned to encompass a farm, so that food and livestock could be raised there for school purposes. But the farmland associated with the school was poor and could not provide enough produce. In addition, students suffered from a high rate of communicable diseases.
