Happy #MountainTopMonday Today's adventures took us to the top of a mountain in the Black Hills to check out an old fire tower! As a matter of fact, this fire tower sits tall at 7,200 feet and is the third tallest fire tower and peak in the Black Hills. On a clear day, you can see all of the Southern Black Hills and even into Wyoming. The tower has gone through three remodels since its establishment in 1910. In fact, in 1914, the tower was modified in order to hold a larger box. If you look at it closely, you will see it has a steel frame. This tower actually had a wooden frame up until 1939. So, lots of changes have happened to this tower over the years to make it so picturesque! Today, the tower is a registered historic landmark and is staffed and managed by the National Park Service. Our flying area is located in Custer County, in the Southern Black Hills; full of mountains, valleys, lakes, and prairies. Every flight is different! Due to airspace restrictions we aren't allowed to fly in the area surrounding Mount Rushmore. It's also quite rugged around the Monument, so it's not ideal for landing a hot air balloon. We recommend visiting Mount Rushmore National Memorial after the flight - order scoop of their famous ice cream, and spend some quality time in the museum. It's a beautiful site and better viewed up-close, with a short walk along the Presidential Trail.
