Built in the 1930s, this Spanish-style fortress boasts over 30 rooms, including studios and living quarters that served as a haven for them to pursue their artistic endeavors among the serene beauty of the South Carolina coast. A family member was working in The Pas so we decided to do a day trip to meet up with him. We did some touristy things while waiting for his shift to end. We checked out the Sam Waller Museum first. It is such a nice little museum with so many interesting artifacts from the area. It's a great spot to learn about the history of The Pas and all the hard work that went into building up this community! Did you know that you can find sea stars in Manitoba? These fascinating animals are perhaps most well-known as members of warm-water coral reef communities, but there are many species that thrive in cold water. One such species is Manitoba's own ‘Leptasterias polaris,’ a small, six-armed species which is right at home in the chilly waters of Hudson Bay. Like other sea stars, L. polaris is an active hunter that crawls over the ocean floor searching for mussels and clams to snack on. When it finds something to eat, L. polaris it uses its suction cup-like tube feet to force its prey's shell open, and then the feast begins! You can find sea stars, along with some other animals that you might not expect to find in Manitoba, represented in the dioramas of our Arctic/Subarctic Gallery here at the Manitoba Museum.
