Here are some of the most common causes for bedwetting in kids; - Immature bladder - Lack of antidiuretic hormone, a hormone that slows down the urine production during the night - Constipation - High urine production - Sleep issues (sleep apnea combined with deep sleep) Although these are the most common causes, it is always a good idea to see a doctor to rule out other medical conditions.

Did you know bed wetting is extremely common? An Australian study looked at bed wetting in children aged 5–12 years and found that 18.9% of these children wet their beds. Of this group, 15% wet at night with no daytime symptoms, and 4% wet at night and during the day. Bed wetting was more common in males, who made up 60% of the bed wetters in this study.

When you feel the need to go and go right NOW, you may be dealing with an Overactive Bladder. If you cannot control the urge and bladder leakage occurs, that is what makes it incontinence. The good news is, in many cases this is a treatable condition and not merely something you have to deal with because of age.
Bedwetting is NOT caused by: being young for your age, laziness, bad behaviour, rebelliousness, or drinking after dinner #letstalkaboutit

A wet bed can make many people feel as if they’re unable to care for themselves. It can also be humiliating to have to talk with family members, caregivers and physicians about something so personal. Most of us are fine talking about blood, bones, organs and so many other elements of our health, but anything bathroom-related can make us uncomfortable. Let's Talk About it!

Here is one common causes of ongoing enuresis, whether it’s nightly, every few nights or less-often, but still regular: Neurological – When your bladder is full, it sends a signal to the brain that it’s time to go to the bathroom. In some people with smaller bladder capacity, there may be a disconnect between how much urine their bladder holds and how the brain is signalled. People with overactive bladder mat be particularly susceptible, as can those with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and other nerve disorders.
Here is one common causes of ongoing enuresis, whether it’s nightly, every few nights or less-often, but still regular: Hormonal – While you sleep, your body produces a hormone called ADH, which is responsible for slowing down the kidney’s production of urine. If you don’t produce enough of this, it can result in episodes of bedwetting. This is especially true for people with diabetes, since lower ADH production is a symptom of the disease.
There aren’t many reliable estimates of how many adults suffer from either form of the condition, in part because of people’s reluctance to report on it. However, some surveys have found that approximately 1% to 2% of adults overall experience the disorder. Among aged care residents, that number may jump to as many as 39%. Adults in aged care facilities shouldn't be uncomfortable!
Here is one common causes of ongoing enuresis, whether it’s nightly, every few nights or less-often, but still regular: Diet-related – The two biggest culprits when it comes to diet are alcohol and caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, so it can increase the production of urine. Alcohol is also a powerful diuretic as well as a depressant, so you don’t only produce more fluid, you can also sleep so deeply that you don’t recognise when you have to go.
Did you know the anxiety and embarrassment associated with nocturnal enuresis can be remarkably powerful – so powerful, in fact, that people would rather suffer silently with the condition than talk about it with others.⠀ ⠀ Untreated bedwetting can result in some serious consequences:⠀ ⠀ • Health Issues – Don’t assume that bedwetting is the problem itself – it may be a symptom of an even more significant underlying health issue.⠀ ⠀ • Skin Care – The skin is a sensitive organ, and prolonged exposure to the acid and moisture of urine can be very damaging. Ongoing bedwetting can be responsible for the creation of sores, infection and worse.⠀ ⠀ • Emotional well-being – The psychological stress that comes with bedwetting can be hard for many people to handle. There is often a loss of self-esteem associated with enuresis – and that’s especially true in the elderly population, who already have a higher rates of depression than the general population.⠀ ⠀ • Lifestyle Limitations – The fear of wetting the bed keeps many sufferers from ever traveling beyond their home – no vacations, no family visits, no business trips.⠀ ⠀ • Strained Relationships – Bedwetting can put enormous pressure between spouses, family members and caregivers. Those with the condition are often deeply ashamed of their inability to control themselves, while those around them can find themselves feeling frustrated, angry and resentful. These feelings may not be rational and they’re nothing that anybody is proud of, but we’re all human and we have human reactions.⠀ ⠀ • Added effort and expense – The amount of additional effort and expense that go into housekeeping can be considerable when dealing with wet beds. Sheets and clothing need to be laundered more often than they otherwise might be – and mattress replacement can be a major expense.⠀ ⠀ #letstalkaboutit
The Clean Up⠀ It pays to be thorough when cleaning bedding following any accidents. There is actually quite a lot of science involved in dealing with urine stains.⠀ With any urine stains it’s best to use an enzymatic cleaner and to start the process within 24 hours of the stain occurring. If it happens during the night, spray with a solution of two parts vinegar to 1-part water (if you have tea tree oil, add two capfuls to the mix). The spray will start to neutralise the urine. After treating the stain, simply bundle it all up and wash as normal in the morning.
Teach your kids how to look after their bladder...⠀ • When they feel they need to do a wee they should STOP what they are doing and go to the toilet.⠀ • Don’t hold on until they are busting.⠀ • Don’t hurry or push to make their wee come out, just wait and relax until it is ready.
Winter is coming…..⠀ Research has shown that children with bedwetting problems do appear to wet the bed more often during winter. This has been attributed to several factors:⠀ 1) Cold weather makes the body’s blood vessels constrict, thus increasing blood pressure and triggering the body to reduce fluid volume through urine. ⠀ 2) The cold causes the bladder to contract, lessening its capacity to hold urine. ⠀ 3) Somewhat ironically, if a child with bedwetting issues does snuggle up under the blankets and falls into a really deep sleep, he or she may also be more likely to wet the bed. ⠀ 4) When it is colder, children tend to reduce the amount that they drink during the day. This can lead to constipation and a full lower abdomen restricts the bladder which cannot then hold the normal amount of urine and overflows quickly.
Did you know bed wetting is extremely common? ⠀ The condition affects 20% of 5-year-olds, 10% of 10-year-olds and 3% of 15-year-olds. The proportion of children who wet their beds reduces with age and research has shown that without any treatment, 14% of bed wetters will overcome this condition each year.⠀ An Australian study looked at bed wetting in children aged 5–12 years and found that 18.9% of these children wet their beds. Of this group, 15% wet at night with no daytime symptoms, and 4% wet at night and during the day. Bed wetting was more common in males, who made up 60% of the bed wetters in this study. Most of these children wet their bed less than once a month.
Early supportive intervention can help minimise the potential emotional impact of persistent bedwetting in children. Following are some useful tips for parents to encourage their child, and express confidence that they will soon be able to stay dry at night:⠀ • Limiting hydration before bedtime⠀ • Encouraging visits to the bathroom before bedtime⠀ • Praising them on dry mornings⠀ • Avoiding punishments for mishaps⠀ • Waking the child during the night to visit the bathroom⠀ Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a little back-up as well. Wearing our Pjama’s can discreetly provide feedback to the wearer when they are wetting themselves. Waking up when wetting helps to educate and overcome the problem of bedwetting for the child.
As common as it is, bedwetting remains a taboo issue making it embarrassing to admit or talk about. However, you should know that up to 20% of all 5-year-olds suffer from this, and 5% of 10-year-olds still suffer. This is not only an issue for children though. It is estimated that 1% of adults struggle with bedwetting as well
FACTS:⠀ - Twice as many boys as girls are bedwetters⠀ - It can be hereditary⠀ - Most children outgrow the problem ⠀ ⠀ A major concern for both the child and their parents is teasing and bullying. This, along with anxiety and shame, can have a huge impact on the child’s social life and happiness. The child often avoid sleepovers and trips together with other children, or even adults, in the fear of others finding out. This leads to the child feeling isolated and excluded.

SOME OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES FOR BEDWETTING ARE:⠀ - Immature bladder⠀ - Lack of antidiuretic hormone, a hormone that slows down the urine production during the night⠀ - Constipation⠀ - High urine production⠀ - Sleep issues (sleep apnea combined with deep sleep) ⠀ ⠀ Although these are the most common causes, it is always a good idea to see a doctor to rule out other medical conditions.
WCW TOP TIPS:⠀ ⠀ - Avoid urinating "just in case". Wait until you actually need to go, and even then, hold out as long as you can. Bladder training is a physical exercise, but it’s just as much a mental one.⠀ ⠀ - By remaining calm, and resisting the urge to go immediately (maybe sit down and hold a “Kegel” for as long as you can) the bladder will stretch over time, thus allowing it to hold bigger volumes.⠀ ⠀ - Stay Active!
Tip 5 – Re-educating the bladder ⠀ ⠀ If you keep emptying your bladder pre-emptively, then it may not fill optimally, and lead to a contraction in size over time. This results in the feeling of needing to urinate more frequently (commonly referred to as “urge incontinence”).⠀ ⠀ Re-educating the bladder literally means retraining the bladder how to work. Although it can take up to several months before there is any noticeable behavioural change, many people find it a fruitful endeavour.
WCW Tip 3 – Keep Hydrated⠀ ⠀ This may seem counter-productive at first, however drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated helps maintain digestive health. Drinking 6-8 glasses per day will ensure the urine produced is not concentrated, thus not irritating to the bladder lining. ⠀ ⠀ Remember that drinks that contain caffeine, cola and alcohol can irritate your bladder, so water is the best choice.
#InvestInContinence with @AusContinence this week
Tip 2 –Limit your intake of irritants⠀ ⠀ Tobacco smoke contains irritants that are thought to be incontinence causing. Nicotine, for example, is cited as a possible factor in causing bladder contractility. In addition, chronic coughing associated with tobacco smoking can put extra pressure on the pelvic muscles and bladder; Such stressing of the bladder often induces incontinence. ⠀ ⠀ Drinks that contain caffeine, cola and alcohol can irritate your bladder; These beverages actually make you produce more urine, resulting in stronger and more frequent urges to go.
