Last week @jensonhateswaste presented to @suthshirecncl about the need for public waste services (bins) along the Taren Point /woolooware shared boardwalk. The council are supporting @jensonhateswaste request, so stay tuned ! We will keep you updated on the progress of the installation of these bins and services especially in the section relevant to one of our clean up sites . #repost from @leannefarmercouncillor … This week before our committee meeting a young resident aged 7 came into the council to discuss the need for better waste services along the Taren Point Boardwalk. 🚮💡 I have had the pleasure of following this inspirational young man who has not only great passion and commitment to his community but has the ability to rally his friends and their families to help as well. On a recent Sunday Jenson and his friends helped @so_shire on their @plasticfreejuly clean up. The team collected 162.4 kilos of rubbish which is amazing but also so sad that so much rubbish along the boardwalk. I am pleased to report that the Sutherland Shire Council staff answered Jenson’s request with a guarantee of new bins along the walk. How much we can always learn from our young crusaders. This week was National Volunteer Week (NVW), Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering! We thank all our community volunteers that help us with our litter data and source reduction citizen science programs! our organisation and volunteers encourage and support businesses and the community to reduce waste, pollution and the usage of specific single use plastics that are common litter issues, from local stormwater and sewage , polluting our public spaces and environments. We work with other organisations, individuals, families, schools, students, businesses and various levels of government, with our citizen science data assisting the global understanding of sources, sinks, effects of plastic pollution and helping drive sustainable solutions including legislative bans on single-use plastics in NSW and Australia. Here is an example of our data when we sort, count and identify the source of items we find in our clean ups. Plastic packaging and single-use plastic items make up around 60 per cent of all litter in NSW, which is why the NSW Government is banning more single-use items from November. Lightweight single-use plastic bags were banned from 1 June, and from 1 November, the NSW Government is banning single-use items including: * plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and cotton buds * food ware and cups made from expanded polystyrene * rinse-off personal care products containing plastic microbeads. You will need to sign on the participation attendance sheet after the safety briefing. Third clean up at this site (Wanda) within 4 weeks and we are still finding litter from the 1980s. That is older than the founders of @so_shire and @plasticfree_sutherlandshire Stop and think about this for a minute - people came to Cronulla’s beaches in the late 1970s , littered these packaging items and straws, and now we are still cleaning them up 40 years later. And then there are the pieces created and littered in the years since, now washing in from our local rivers and streets. Stop littering and stop using it so it cannot become litter in the first place ! This morning was #cronullarotaryclub August beach clean up and look at the thousands of small bits of plastic including cotton buds from sewage , balloon clips from #skylitter #balloonreleasesarelittering and broken bits of plastics. This is the third clean up in the past month that @so_shire has seen the @mcdonaldsau 1980s polystyrene packaging but today we found bigger pieces, and also still finding the blue straws from the 1980s (most likely from the local milk bar back then) 8.4 kg in weight but as those small buts of plastic weigh hardly anything, it is the amount and type (and source) we focus on! At first sight the beach looked pretty clean; however, that was not the case as we know ! I was lucky to visit the South African program in Cape Town in 2020 and will finally share with that story soon. Yesterday for #WorldEnvironmentDay we gave our #onlyoneearth some help and respect removing thousands of pieces of single use plastics from one of our data sites Cricket Pitch, Kurnell. The team from @tradiesclub and their families braved the chilly wind , returning this year to this site as unfortunately there was plenty of debris to pick up. Majority of the debris was all forms of polystyrene, many broken plastic clear takeaway containers, consumer fishing litter, small pieces of soft plastics (from food wrapper packaging and cigarette packaging), butts, lids, fruit stickers, cotton bud and lollipop stems , tiling squares and wedges, and single use consumer items such as straws and cutlery, and balloons 💔 103.4 kg - as much of this was lightweight plastic pieces, you can imagine how many thousands of pieces we picked up?! We will be documenting two bags to give you idea of how many pieces of soft plastic weigh. This time next year we hope to record a reduction in the items that will be banned from 2022 (lightweight plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, cotton bud stems, polystyrene food packaging , bowls and plates) However, as over 50% of what we picked up yesterday is not part of the ban (soft plastic food packaging , Non-food polystyrene, lolllipop stems and clear plastic takeaway packaging including cups and containers with lids), please see below for some tips from Tradies to reduce our impact : “Though it looked clean from the footpath, we found plenty of styrofoam, cigarette filters, cotton tips, food wrappers, bottle tops and more. These end up in our oceans and bush land and hurt our precious wildlife. There are lots of ways we can all help protect our environment, not just today but every day. A few examples are… 1. Swap for resuables wherever you can 2. Take 3 for the sea whenever you’re at the beach (or anywhere really!) 3. They will end up in the stormwater system that lead directly to where we SWIM!!! @boydos.bush.bash.4.trash picked up 100 on his 24.3km, 4.5 hr recent walk. That's 4 masks/km on average OR 22 MASKS per HOUR !!! Thank you Boyd for picking up after the litterers who aren't respecting this beautiful place we call home. Are you BRAVE enough? I was first introduced to #plasticfreejuly in 2016 just after I had Sean. I took the easy challenge and just eliminated the top four plastics that year: - water bottles - plastic shopping bags - straws, and - disposable coffee cups I invested in some reusable shopping bags and a #keepcup and didn't find the challenge too difficult. It did however open my eyes to how much plastic we bring into our homes on a daily basis 😲 I was HORRIFED!!!!! Since then I have slowly made changes, one small change a month to try and eliminate our impact on the world. I maintain that every little bit helps and we can all make an impact.
