One happy side-effect of getting into permaculture living is that ‘shopping’ for birthday presents gets a lot simpler (and cheaper). Shout-out to my warping board! This is my #1 most used tool in the Recycled Yarn studio, and it has no moving parts (as long as the screws are all tightened). This tool is used by weavers in preparation for dressing a floor loom to measure out warp by the yard and half yard. The warp threads are those in a weaving that run towards and away from the weaver's body at the loom. Warping boards come in all shapes and sizes - some even spin! Mine is my favorite, though. A few months ago, our landlord pulled out all the luscious hedges along the shared driveway for our complex of townhouses. It made us terribly sad. A couple of weeks ago, we noticed that a tomato plant had popped up out of nowhere in the place where some of the hedging had been. Nature is remarkable. It was abundant with fruit despite no tending and was almost buckling under its own weight. Over the weeks, some of the fruit started to ripen on the vine. But it was unlikely this would continue as we are definitely starting to feel the cold in Canberra. The frosts have arrived. So, I harvested the green tomatoes and made green tomato pickles. I simply salted the tomatoes and some onion overnight. Then filled a couple of jars, added some garlic, peppercorns and chilli. And topped up with a pickling brine. I am going to let them sit for a little while for the flavours to infuse but hopefully they taste as good as they look! In my kitchen, I have a little tub where I keep random ingredients. You know the ones that would otherwise hide at the back of the pantry until you deep clean it one day in a fit of productivity? Half a bottle of pomegranate molasses (a cliche, I know), a jar of biscoff (an Aldi special buy which was way too sweet for my taste), a few bars of 90% chocolate (which honestly is a bit of a struggle to enjoy), half a bag of chickpea flour. Having these ingredients in plain sight means I am much more likely to use them and they are much less likely to be wasted. The said chickpea flour was purchased over a year ago when my little one started solids. I lovingly made beautiful healthy purées which were less lovingly refused in favour of self-feeding. We moved very quickly to baby led weaning. To avoid wasting the purées, I mixed them with chickpea flour and fried as little patties. Perfect for tiny hands. But now that the little one is happily eating most of the same foods as us, we have come full circle. What to do with the rest of the chickpea flour? These chocolate chickpea cookies come from @occasionallyeggs blog. I skipped the chocolate chunks to make them less rich and added a little extra salt on top for sparkle. These are good! Soft and almost brownie like but without the heaviness. Probably also toddler friendly, although I don’t know if I am willing to share!
